Telangana state government scheme
Marriage Registration Certificate in Telangana is issued by the Registration and Stamps Department through the Sub-Registrar Office, with online pre-registration on registration.telangana.gov.in. Telangana charges Rs 200 for registration under the Hindu Marriage Act and Rs 240 for solemnising a marriage under the Special Marriage Act, which additionally requires a 30-day public notice period before the certificate can be issued.
What is the Marriage Registration Certificate in Telangana?
The Marriage Registration Certificate in Telangana is the state's official record that a marriage exists, issued by the Registration and Stamps Department, Government of Telangana. Unlike a temple receipt, a church record or a Nikahnama, the Telangana certificate is a public register entry maintained by a Sub-Registrar and is the document every consulate, bank, passport office and pension authority actually accepts.
Telangana runs marriage registration through the same Sub-Registrar Offices that register property documents. The officer wears two hats: as Marriage Registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955 (with the Andhra Pradesh Hindu Marriage Rules 1965 as adapted by Telangana), and as Marriage Officer under the Special Marriage Act 1954. The department also handles registration under the Christian Marriage Act. The department's own portal, registration.telangana.gov.in, states that the information is maintained online and that no physical visit is required to obtain it, although the signing itself is always in person.
Which route applies to me; Hindu Marriage Act or Special Marriage Act?
This is the single decision that determines your documents, your fee and your timeline in Telangana.
The Hindu Marriage Act 1955 route applies when the marriage has already been solemnised according to Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh rites. Registration here is a record of an event that has already happened. There is no waiting period, no public notice and no objection window. You file Form A, produce the invitation card and a wedding photograph, bring three witnesses, and the registrar makes the entry. The fee is Rs 200.
The Special Marriage Act 1954 route applies to an inter-faith marriage, a marriage where the parties do not want a religious ceremony, or a couple who simply prefer a civil marriage. Here the Sub-Registrar does not merely record a marriage. The Sub-Registrar solemnises it. That is why the Act imposes a 30-day public notice first. Telangana takes the notice online, publishes it locally and in the district offices where the parties reside, and allows any person to object during the 30 days. Only after the 30 clear days expire do the parties sign a declaration before the Sub-Registrar in the presence of three witnesses, after which the marriage is entered in the Marriage Certificate Book and an extract is issued. The solemnisation fee is Rs 240.
A couple already married under Hindu rites can still register under the Special Marriage Act: Telangana notes that previously performed ceremonies can be registered retroactively, but the 30-day notice still applies.
Who is eligible to register a marriage in Telangana?
You can apply if all of the following are true:
- The bride was at least 18 and the groom at least 21 at the time of the marriage.
- Neither party has a living spouse at the time of registration.
- Neither party is mentally incapacitated or incapable of giving valid consent.
- The parties are not within the degrees of prohibited relationship.
- The marriage was solemnised inside the Sub-Registrar's jurisdiction, or either spouse has resided in that jurisdiction for at least six months before the marriage (Hindu Marriage Act route) or at least 30 days before the notice (Special Marriage Act route).
You cannot apply, and a Telangana registrar must refuse; where either party was underage at the time of the marriage, where either party has an undissolved earlier marriage, where the parties fall within the prohibited degrees of relationship, or where neither party has any residential connection with the Sub-Registrar's jurisdiction. A couple with no Telangana jurisdictional link must register in the state where the marriage took place or where they reside.
What does marriage registration cost in Telangana?
The fees below come from the Telangana Registration and Stamps Department's own published fee schedules.
Hindu Marriage Act 1955 (Rule 15, Hindu Marriage Rules 1965):
- Registration of marriage; Rs 200
- Grant of extract from the Hindu Marriage Register, Rs 5
- Certified extract from the Hindu Marriage Register: issued under the official seal of the registrar on payment of the fee
- Inter-caste marriage: no registration fee, under the Home (General-A) Department order dated 5 October 1976
Special Marriage Act 1954:
- Every notice of intended marriage, Rs 120
- Publication of notice: actual newspaper charges, taken as an advance
- Solemnising a marriage: Rs 240
- Solemnising at a place outside the marriage officer's office; Rs 90 extra (plus Rs 15 under the older schedule head), with no travelling allowance claimable in addition
- Receiving notice of caveat; Rs 240
- Receiving and processing an objection, Rs 300
- Certified copy of an entry in the Marriage Notice Book; Rs 25
- Certified copy of an entry in the Marriage Certificate Book; Rs 25
- Marriage Officer's certificate that notice was posted up, Rs 45
- Search of a current-year entry; Rs 25; of an earlier year, Rs 45
These are the complete government charges. Marriage registration in Telangana costs the listed government fee and nothing more. Agents who advertise "marriage certificate in one day" for several thousand rupees are selling a service the Sub-Registrar performs for Rs 200 or Rs 240. Pay the fee only through registration.telangana.gov.in or at the Sub-Registrar Office counter, and insist on a receipt.
How to apply for marriage registration in Telangana
Follow these steps for the Hindu Marriage Act route:
- Identify the correct Sub-Registrar Office. Use the SRO locator on registration.telangana.gov.in to find the office covering the place of marriage or the place where either spouse has lived for six months before the marriage.
- Complete online pre-registration. Open the Hindu Marriage pre-registration link on registration.telangana.gov.in, enter both spouses' details exactly as printed on the SSC certificate or passport, enter the date and place of marriage, and enter the details of the three witnesses.
- Pay the prescribed fee online. Pay Rs 200 through the portal, or claim the inter-caste exemption where it applies, and save the payment reference.
- Fill and sign Form A. Both parties, or their guardians, sign the memorandum. Telangana's own instruction is blunt: check the details in Form A three times, and make sure the names of the bride and groom always tally with the names given in the passport, SSC certificate and other certificates.
- Appear before the registrar with three witnesses. Form A must be presented in person. Carry the wedding invitation card, a photograph of the couple together, date-of-birth proof and residence proof, along with the three witnesses and their photo IDs.
- Sign the register and collect the certificate. Three witnesses sign the register at the Sub-Registrar Office, the registrar makes the entry, and the certificate is issued. Verify every detail on the certificate the moment you receive it.
For the Special Marriage Act route, steps 1 to 3 are replaced by filing the notice of intended marriage online in a jurisdiction where at least one party has resided for not less than 30 days immediately preceding the date, paying the Rs 120 notice fee, waiting the full 30-day publication and objection period, and then appearing to sign the declaration before the Sub-Registrar with three witnesses and paying the Rs 240 solemnisation fee.
How do I check the status of a Telangana marriage application?
Telangana publishes a Special Marriage Notice Dashboard on registration.telangana.gov.in, where a filed notice of intended marriage and its 30-day window can be tracked. For a Hindu Marriage Act application, track the pre-registration acknowledgement number on the portal, or call the Sub-Registrar Office directly. The department also runs a WhatsApp chatbot, Medha, on 82476 23578, and a WhatsApp number 8247619983 for enquiries.
Does a Telangana marriage certificate expire?
No. A marriage registration entry in Telangana is permanent and the certificate does not need renewal. What people usually need later is a fresh certified copy of the entry rather than a new registration, obtained from the same Sub-Registrar Office for Rs 5 (Hindu Marriage Register extract) or Rs 25 (Marriage Certificate Book entry), plus the applicable search fee of Rs 25 or Rs 45.
Why do Telangana marriage registration applications get rejected?
The recurring reasons are practical rather than legal:
- Name mismatch. The name in Form A does not match the SSC certificate or passport. Telangana flags this explicitly because it causes visa refusals years later.
- Wrong jurisdiction. Neither the place of marriage nor either spouse's six-month residence falls in the chosen Sub-Registrar's area.
- Fewer than three witnesses, or witnesses without valid photo ID.
- No proof of solemnisation, the invitation card or the joint wedding photograph is missing on the Hindu Marriage Act route.
- Underage at the time of marriage, which makes the entry legally impossible.
- An undissolved earlier marriage, with no divorce decree or death certificate of the previous spouse on record.
- A valid objection filed during the 30-day Special Marriage Act notice period, which the Marriage Officer must enquire into before proceeding.
Where do I complain if my Telangana marriage registration is stuck?
Call the Registration and Stamps Department toll-free number 1800 599 4788, or use the department's WhatsApp line 8247619983. Escalate in writing to the District Registrar of the district in which the Sub-Registrar Office falls. Where a Marriage Officer refuses to solemnise or register a marriage under the Special Marriage Act, the Act requires the reasons to be recorded, and a certified copy of those recorded reasons can be obtained from the office, that written refusal is what an appeal is built on.

Frequently asked questions
What is the fee for marriage registration in Telangana?
Telangana charges Rs 200 for registration of a marriage under the Hindu Marriage Act 1955, as fixed by Rule 15 of the Hindu Marriage Rules 1965, and Rs 240 for solemnising or registering a marriage under the Special Marriage Act 1954. A certified extract from the Hindu Marriage Register costs Rs 5, and a certified copy of an entry in the Marriage Certificate Book under the Special Marriage Act costs Rs 25.
Is marriage registration free for inter-caste couples in Telangana?
Yes: no registration fee is charged for an inter-caste marriage. A note in the Telangana fee schedule under the Hindu Marriage Act records that the fee specified in item (1) of the schedule shall not be charged in respect of an inter-caste marriage, under a Home (General-A) Department order dated 5 October 1976.
How long does the Special Marriage Act route take in Telangana?
At least 30 days, because the Special Marriage Act 1954 requires a public notice of intended marriage to run for 30 clear days before the marriage can be solemnised. Telangana publishes the notice locally and in the district offices where the parties reside, and objections may be filed during that window. The Hindu Marriage Act route has no waiting period because the marriage has already been solemnised.
Which Sub-Registrar Office should I go to in Telangana?
Go to the Sub-Registrar Office in whose jurisdiction the marriage was solemnised, or the office where either spouse has resided for at least six months before the marriage. The Telangana Registration and Stamps Department portal carries an SRO locator that maps a village, ward or mandal to the correct office.
Can we complete Telangana marriage registration entirely online?
No: the online step is pre-registration, not the whole process. Telangana accepts the application, the prescribed fee and the notice online, but Form A must be presented in person to the registrar under the Hindu Marriage Act, and under the Special Marriage Act both parties must sign the declaration before the Sub-Registrar in the presence of three witnesses.
What is the minimum age for marriage registration in Telangana?
The bride must be at least 18 and the groom at least 21 at the time the marriage was solemnised. The Telangana Registration and Stamps Department states this age condition for both the Hindu Marriage Act and the Special Marriage Act routes, and a registrar cannot register a marriage that breaches it.
Do I need an agent or middleman to register a marriage in Telangana?
No: Telangana's published fee is Rs 200 under the Hindu Marriage Act and Rs 240 under the Special Marriage Act, and the application can be filed directly on registration.telangana.gov.in without any intermediary. Any person demanding thousands of rupees to "arrange" a marriage certificate is charging for something the department does at the listed fee.
How do I get a duplicate marriage certificate in Telangana?
Apply to the same Sub-Registrar Office for a certified copy of the register entry. Telangana charges Rs 5 for a certified extract from the Hindu Marriage Register and Rs 25 for a certified copy of an entry in the Marriage Certificate Book under the Special Marriage Act, plus a search fee of Rs 25 for a current-year entry or Rs 45 for an earlier year.
