What is the Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak scheme?

Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak together form Telangana's marriage assistance scheme, launched by the Government of Telangana on 2 October 2014. The scheme pays a one-time grant of Rs 1,00,116 to an unmarried girl from a poor family at the time of her marriage. Kalyana Lakshmi is the name used for Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe and Backward Class or Economically Backward Class families; Shaadi Mubarak is the parallel scheme for families from minority communities. The benefit, the documents and the process are the same in both.

The grant started at Rs 51,000, was raised to Rs 75,116, and was increased again to Rs 1,00,116 in March 2018. The odd-looking figure is intentional. The extra Rs 116 is a traditional auspicious addition. By March 2018 roughly 3,90,000 girls had been assisted, and the state allocated about Rs 1,350 crore to the scheme in 2020-21, which makes it one of the largest programmes of its kind run by any state.

The scheme has two stated objectives, and both matter for how it is administered:

  • Prevent child marriage. Because the money is conditional on the bride being 18 or older, the scheme gives a poor family a direct financial reason to wait. Age proof is therefore checked strictly.
  • Reduce the debt burden of marriage. Wedding expenses push poor households into high-interest private borrowing more reliably than almost any other event. A Rs 1,00,116 grant paid to the bride is meant to blunt that.

Who is eligible for Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak?

A family qualifies if:

  • The bride is a resident of Telangana and her family lives in the state.
  • The bride is 18 years or older on the date of the marriage.
  • The combined parental annual income is within the notified limit. The figure widely published for the scheme is Rs 2 lakh a year; confirm the limit currently in force with the Tahsildar's office before applying, because income ceilings are revised by government order.
  • The bride belongs to a Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Backward Class or Economically Backward Class family (Kalyana Lakshmi) or to a minority community (Shaadi Mubarak).
  • This is the bride's first marriage.

These applicants are not eligible:

  • Brides under 18 on the marriage date. There is no discretion here at all.
  • Families whose annual income exceeds the ceiling notified for the scheme.
  • Non-residents of Telangana, even if the wedding takes place in the state.
  • Second marriages, and any repeat claim for the same bride.
  • Applications where the caste or income certificate cannot be produced in the applicant's own family's name.

One point trips up many families: the grant is paid into the bride's own bank account. An application quoting the father's or the husband's account will be held up. Open a savings account in the girl's name, seeded with her Aadhaar, before you start the application.

What documents are required for Kalyana Lakshmi?

Document Mandatory Notes
Bride's Aadhaar card Yes Name must match the bank account exactly
Age proof (birth certificate / SSC) Yes Must show age 18+ on the marriage date
Income certificate Yes Issued by the Tahsildar through MeeSeva
Caste certificate Yes Decides which welfare department handles the file
Marriage proof Yes Registered marriage certificate is strongest
Bride's bank passbook Yes Account must be in the bride's own name
Residence proof Yes Establishes Telangana residence
Bridegroom's Aadhaar Yes Records the groom's identity and age

Get the income certificate and caste certificate first. Both are issued by the Tahsildar through MeeSeva and both take time; families that leave them to the end lose weeks. Registering the marriage and obtaining the certificate is also worth doing regardless of the grant, because it is the document that protects a woman's legal rights later.

How to apply for Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak

  1. Open a bank account in the bride's name and get it linked to her Aadhaar number. Do this before anything else, because the grant cannot be paid without it.
  2. Obtain the income certificate and caste certificate from the Tahsildar through a MeeSeva centre, in the name of the bride's family.
  3. Register on the Telangana welfare portal at telanganaepass.cgg.gov.in and open the Kalyana Lakshmi or Shaadi Mubarak application, choosing the option that matches the family's category.
  4. Fill in the application: bride's details, groom's details, marriage date and venue, family income, caste, and the bride's bank account number and IFSC code. Check every spelling against Aadhaar.
  5. Upload the scanned documents listed above in the sizes and formats the portal specifies.
  6. Submit and save the acknowledgement number. This number is the only way to track the file afterwards, so photograph it and write it down.
  7. Attend verification. The application goes to the Tahsildar for field verification of age, income, residence and the fact of the marriage. Keep the originals of every uploaded document ready.
  8. Wait for the sanction by the concerned welfare department, after which the amount is credited to the bride's account.

Families without internet access can complete the same application at a MeeSeva centre, which will charge only its notified service fee for the typing and uploading.

How do you check your Kalyana Lakshmi application status?

  1. Open telanganaepass.cgg.gov.in and go to the Kalyana Lakshmi or Shaadi Mubarak section.
  2. Choose the application status option and enter your acknowledgement number.
  3. Read the stage shown; pending with the Tahsildar, verified, sanctioned, or payment released.
  4. If the status has not moved for a long period, visit the Mandal Revenue Office with a printout of the acknowledgement and ask which document or verification step is holding the file.

Do not submit a second application because the first has not moved. Duplicate applications for the same marriage are a common reason for both being flagged.

Why do Kalyana Lakshmi applications get rejected?

  • Bride under 18 on the marriage date, established from the age proof.
  • Income above the notified ceiling, or an income certificate that has expired or was issued for a different purpose.
  • Bank account not in the bride's name, or not Aadhaar-seeded.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank account and the caste certificate. Even a middle-name difference stalls the file.
  • Marriage proof missing or weak — no registered certificate and no supporting photographs or invitation.
  • Application filed very late after the marriage date.
  • Duplicate application for the same bride, or a repeat claim on a second marriage.
  • Caste certificate not matching the department the application was filed under.

Nearly all of these are documentation problems rather than eligibility problems, which means most rejections can be prevented by spending an afternoon checking that the bride's name is spelt identically on Aadhaar, the bank passbook, the caste certificate and the income certificate.

How long does the money take to arrive?

The grant is released after the Tahsildar's verification and the welfare department's sanction, and families should plan for a wait measured in months rather than weeks, particularly when a large number of marriages fall in the same auspicious season. The right response to a slow file is to check the status online with the acknowledgement number and then take a printout to the Mandal Revenue Office, not to reapply.

Because of that lag, do not treat Kalyana Lakshmi as money available on the wedding day. Plan the wedding within what the family can manage, and treat the grant as reimbursement of costs already incurred or as the bride's own capital afterwards.

Where do you complain about a Kalyana Lakshmi problem?

  • Mandal Revenue Office (Tahsildar). The verification authority and the first place to ask why a file has not moved.
  • District Welfare Officer for SC, ST, BC or Minorities Welfare at the district collectorate, depending on which department your application sits with.
  • District Collectorate grievance day, where a written petition is registered and given a reference number.
  • MeeSeva centre where the application was filed, for technical or upload errors on the portal.

Always take the acknowledgement number, a photocopy set of the documents, and any SMS you have received about the application. And remember that applying is free: no one is entitled to a cut of a Rs 1,00,116 grant meant for the bride.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does Kalyana Lakshmi give?

Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak give a one-time grant of Rs 1,00,116, paid into the bride's own bank account. The amount was raised to this figure in March 2018 from the earlier Rs 75,116, and it is not repeated for a second marriage.

What is the difference between Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak?

There is no difference in the money — both pay Rs 1,00,116. Kalyana Lakshmi is the name used for SC, ST and BC/EBC families and Shaadi Mubarak for minority families, and the applications are handled by the respective welfare departments.

What is the minimum age for Kalyana Lakshmi?

The bride must be at least 18 years old on the date of marriage. Preventing child marriage is a stated objective of the scheme, so age proof is checked strictly and an application for a bride under 18 is rejected outright.

Who cannot apply for Kalyana Lakshmi?

Girls below 18 on the marriage date, families whose annual income is above the notified limit, non-residents of Telangana, and brides applying for a second marriage are not eligible. The grant is also not given twice within the same family for the same girl.

Whose bank account does the money go into?

The grant is credited to the bride's own bank account, not the parents' and not the husband's. This is deliberate — the design intent is that the money belongs to the woman herself, so open an Aadhaar-linked account in her name before applying.

How long does the Kalyana Lakshmi payment take?

The timeline depends on how fast the Tahsildar's verification and the welfare department's sanction move, and it commonly runs into several months rather than weeks. Track the application online with the acknowledgement number rather than reapplying.

Can the application be filed after the wedding?

Yes, applications are ordinarily processed around the marriage date, but do not delay. Late applications are the most common cause of rejection on procedural grounds, so file as soon as the marriage is fixed or immediately after it takes place.

Is there any fee for applying?

No. Applying for Kalyana Lakshmi or Shaadi Mubarak is free. A MeeSeva centre may charge its small notified service fee for typing and uploading, but nobody can lawfully charge a commission to "get the grant sanctioned".

How do I check my Kalyana Lakshmi application status online?

Open telanganaepass.cgg.gov.in, go to the Kalyana Lakshmi or Shaadi Mubarak section, choose the application status option, and enter your acknowledgement number. The status shown will be pending with the Tahsildar, verified, sanctioned, or payment released; if it has not moved for a long period, visit the Mandal Revenue Office with a printout.
