Destitute Widow Pension Scheme - Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand state government scheme
Destitute Widow Pension Scheme in Uttarakhand pays Rs 1,500 per month to widows aged 18 years and above whose monthly family income does not exceed Rs 4,000 or who hold a BPL card. Applicants need the husband's death certificate and apply free at ssp.uk.gov.in or the District Social Welfare Office.
What is the Destitute Widow Pension Scheme in Uttarakhand?
Destitute Widow Pension Scheme, known locally as the vidhwa pension or nirashrit vidhwa pension, is a monthly social security pension run by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Uttarakhand. The scheme gives a regular cash income to widows who have no dependable means of support after their husband's death.
According to the Social Welfare Department, the Destitute Widow Pension Scheme pays Rs 1,500 per month to each sanctioned beneficiary, credited straight to the widow's own bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer. There is no intermediary and no cash payment at any office.
Widow pension in Uttarakhand is one of eight pensions administered through the state's Social Security Pension portal, ssp.uk.gov.in, which runs on the eSPAN platform built by the National Informatics Centre, Uttarakhand State Unit. The portal's dashboard records widow pension as the second-largest of these programmes, with roughly 2.32 lakh beneficiaries and about Rs 141 crore disbursed against the scheme: behind old age pension and ahead of disability pension.
Part of the money comes from the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme under the National Social Assistance Programme of the Government of India, and the state adds a top-up so that every sanctioned widow receives the same Rs 1,500 in hand. The beneficiary sees a single monthly credit and does not need to track the central and state shares separately.
Key features
- Rs 1,500 per month, paid by DBT into a core banking account in the widow's own name.
- Aimed at destitute widows, the income and BPL test is the core filter.
- Application is free, online through ssp.uk.gov.in or offline at the District Social Welfare Office.
- No annual re-application; payment continues while eligibility holds and periodic verification is completed.
Who is eligible for the Uttarakhand widow pension?
You can apply if:
- You are a widow and can produce your husband's death certificate.
- You are a permanent resident of Uttarakhand.
- You are 18 years of age or above. The department's own service page states the minimum age as 18; scheme listings on the national myScheme portal describe the band as 18 to 60 years, after which a widow is generally transferred to old age pension at the same Rs 1,500 rate.
- Your monthly income from all sources does not exceed Rs 4,000, or you hold a BPL ration card.
- You have been selected in an open meeting of the Gram Sabha, or recommended by your ward councillor in an urban area.
- You have a CBS bank account in your own name; not a joint account with a son or relative.
You cannot apply if:
- You have remarried. Remarriage ends eligibility, and a pension drawn after remarriage is recoverable.
- You are not a widow. A deserted, separated or abandoned woman is not eligible under this scheme, but Uttarakhand runs a separate Parityakta pension for that situation on the same portal.
- Your monthly income is above Rs 4,000 and you do not hold a BPL card.
- You are not a resident of Uttarakhand.
- You are already drawing another state social security pension, such as disability, deserted woman, farmer or Teelu Rauteli pension. Only one of these pensions is payable to the same person.
- You cannot produce your husband's death certificate. Where the death was never registered, the death must first be registered with the local body before the pension file can move.
What documents are required for the Uttarakhand widow pension?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Husband's death certificate | Yes | The defining document for this pension |
| Income certificate or BPL card | Yes | Monthly income up to Rs 4,000 from all sources |
| Family register extract (rural) / ration card (urban) | Yes | Kutumb register nakal from the Gram Panchayat |
| Gram Panchayat or councillor recommendation | Yes | Selection in an open Gram Sabha meeting |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identity and bank seeding for DBT |
| Bank passbook of a CBS branch | Yes | Account in the widow's own name |
| Certified passport-size photograph | Yes | Recent photograph, attested |
Widows who do not yet have a bank account in their own name should open one before applying. A large share of otherwise valid files stall at the payment stage because the account named on the form belongs to a son or brother.
How to apply for the Uttarakhand widow pension online
- Open ssp.uk.gov.in and choose the new online application option, or go directly to the widow pension form at ssp.uk.gov.in/OnlineRegistration/FrmWidowOnlineApplicationForm.aspx.
- Select Widow Pension as the scheme, then enter your district, block or municipal body, village or ward, and your mobile number.
- Fill in your personal details — name, husband's name, date of birth, category and Aadhaar number, exactly as they appear on your Aadhaar card.
- Enter the husband's death certificate details and the bank account number with IFSC code of a CBS branch account in your own name.
- Upload the scanned documents: death certificate, income certificate or BPL card, family register extract, photograph, bank passbook and Aadhaar.
- Submit the form and note down the application number on the confirmation screen. Every later status check needs it.
- Print the submitted form, get the Gram Pradhan or ward councillor recommendation signed on it, and deposit the set with the District Social Welfare Office if asked.
The same form can be filed through the Apni Sarkar portal at eservices.uk.gov.in and at any Common Service Centre for the notified assisted-service fee.
How to apply offline at the District Social Welfare Office
- Visit the District Social Welfare Office in your district headquarters and collect the widow pension application form free of charge.
- Attach self-attested copies of the husband's death certificate, income certificate or BPL card, family register extract, Aadhaar, bank passbook and a certified photograph.
- Get the form signed by your Gram Pradhan or ward councillor confirming selection in the open Gram Sabha meeting.
- Submit the complete set at the counter and collect the dated acknowledgement carrying the reference number.
Block-level Social Welfare staff and the Gram Panchayat secretary can help fill the form for applicants who cannot read the columns.
How to check your widow pension status in Uttarakhand
- Open ssp.uk.gov.in and select the application status or pensioner information link.
- Enter your application number, or use the mobile-number search where the portal offers it.
- Check the stage displayed: pending at block level, verified, sanctioned or rejected with a reason.
- For a sanctioned case, open the pensioner information report to see which months have been paid.
The portal publishes district-wise and block-wise pensioner lists, so a relative can confirm the name has been sanctioned even without an application number.
Why widow pension applications are rejected in Uttarakhand
- Death certificate missing or not registered, so the widowhood cannot be established on record.
- Income certificate above Rs 4,000 a month, or an income certificate that has expired.
- Bank account not in the widow's own name, a joint account, or a non-CBS account. This is the most common reason a sanctioned pension never arrives.
- Aadhaar not seeded with the bank account, so the DBT credit fails.
- Missing Gram Sabha selection or an unsigned councillor recommendation.
- Duplicate pension. The applicant already draws another pension on the same portal.
- Name mismatch across Aadhaar, the bank passbook and the family register.
Each of these can be fixed. Correct the document and resubmit through ssp.uk.gov.in, then follow up in person with the District Social Welfare Officer, who is the sanctioning authority for the district.
Where to complain if the Uttarakhand widow pension stops
- Social Welfare Department toll-free helpline: 1800-180-4236, and the department's mobile and WhatsApp support number 63952-21188 for pension and scholarship queries.
- District Social Welfare Officer in your district headquarters, for verification delays, rejections and bank-seeding failures.
- Directorate of Social Welfare, Uttarakhand, IT Cell, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Colony, Adhoiwala, Dehradun 248001, email swditcell[at]gmail[dot]com.
- Chief Minister's helpline 1905 where the district office does not resolve the matter.
Destitute Widow Pension Scheme applications are free at every stage. No pradhan, official or agent may charge a fee to include a widow's name in the pension list, and no department official will ask for a bank OTP.
