Marriage Registration Certificate in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh state government scheme
Marriage Registration Certificate in Andhra Pradesh is issued by the Registration and Stamps Department, whose citizen portal is registration.ap.gov.in, with the jurisdictional Sub-Registrar acting as Marriage Registrar. Couples file the memorandum of marriage online or at the Sub-Registrar office, appear with witnesses for verification, and download the certificate from the IGRS portal once the entry is signed.
Marriage Registration Certificate in Andhra Pradesh is issued by the Registration and Stamps Department, the department Andhra Pradesh citizens usually know as IGRS AP, whose portal is registration.ap.gov.in. The registering officer is the jurisdictional Sub-Registrar, acting as Marriage Registrar. This matters when you compare Andhra Pradesh with states such as Bihar or Uttar Pradesh: marriage registration here belongs to the same department that registers sale deeds, not to a revenue e-district system, so the workflow, the office and the certificate design all follow registration-department practice.
Which law will your marriage be registered under in Andhra Pradesh?
Two laws are in play, and they carry different timelines.
The Hindu Marriage Act, 1955 applies where both spouses are Hindu, Buddhist, Jain or Sikh. The marriage has already been solemnised by ceremony, so registration only records it. Two witnesses attend, and the entry can be signed on the appointment date once the Sub-Registrar is satisfied with the documents.
The Special Marriage Act, 1954 is the civil route. It applies where the spouses follow different religions, where one is a foreign national, or where the couple wants a civil marriage without any religious ceremony. Here the Sub-Registrar functions as Marriage Officer. Notice of the intended marriage is given to the Marriage Officer of a district where at least one party has resided for at least 30 days immediately before the notice; the notice is then published for 30 days to invite objections; and only after that period passes without a sustained objection can the marriage be solemnised and registered. Three witnesses attend on that day. A couple already married by ceremony may also register under Section 15 of the Special Marriage Act, and the 30-day notice applies there too.
Who can and cannot apply in Andhra Pradesh?
You can apply if the marriage was solemnised anywhere in Andhra Pradesh, or if either spouse ordinarily resides in the state and can produce address proof for a Sub-Registrar's jurisdiction. Both parties must have been of legal marrying age on the date of the wedding to 21 years for the man and 18 years for the woman, and both must have been of sound mind and capable of giving valid consent.
You cannot apply where either party had a living spouse from an earlier marriage that was not dissolved by divorce or ended by death. You are not eligible where the parties fall within the degrees of prohibited relationship, or are sapindas of each other under the Hindu Marriage Act, unless a custom governing both parties permits the marriage. A file where the SSC certificate shows either party below the legal age on the stated wedding date will be refused, not registered.
Which documents does the Andhra Pradesh Sub-Registrar need?
The core file is: the memorandum of marriage signed by both parties; Aadhaar of both spouses, since Andhra Pradesh runs Aadhaar-based identification across registration services; date of birth proof for each party (SSC certificate, birth certificate or passport); address proof for each party; the marriage invitation card and photographs of the ceremony; passport-size photographs of both parties and a joint photograph; and identity proof of the witnesses, who must appear in person.
Add a temple, church or other religious institution's certificate where the marriage was solemnised there. Add the divorce decree or the death certificate of the previous spouse where either party was married before. If one party is a foreign national, carry the passport, valid visa and a no-impediment certificate from that person's embassy or consulate.
Carry originals to the Sub-Registrar office. Uploads are for the file; the officer verifies originals before signing.
What does marriage registration cost in Andhra Pradesh?
Andhra Pradesh charges a statutory registration fee under the applicable marriage registration rules, plus a small separate fee for a certified copy of the register entry. The exact amount due is displayed on the registration.ap.gov.in payment screen before you confirm, and at the Sub-Registrar counter for a walk-in file. Meeseva centres charge a small published service charge on top of the government fee for doing the data entry, and that charge is displayed at the counter.
Pay only the government's listed fee, directly on the official portal or at the office counter, and insist on the receipt. Brokers who hang around Sub-Registrar offices in Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Guntur and Tirupati quote bundled "marriage registration packages" running into thousands of rupees. Nothing in that package is a service the state charges for, and no broker can shorten the 30-day Special Marriage Act notice, which is fixed by statute.
How to apply for a marriage certificate in Andhra Pradesh online
- Go to registration.ap.gov.in and create a citizen account with your mobile number and email, verifying it by OTP.
- Log in and choose the marriage registration service, then select the Act; Hindu Marriage Act 1955 or Special Marriage Act 1954.
- Fill the memorandum of marriage: both parties' names, dates of birth, religion, occupation and addresses; the date and place of the marriage; and the details of the witnesses.
- Upload the scanned documents — Aadhaar, date of birth proof, address proof, invitation card, ceremony photographs, passport-size photographs and, where applicable, the divorce decree or death certificate.
- Pay the fee shown at the payment step and keep the acknowledgement with the application number.
- Book the appointment at the jurisdictional Sub-Registrar office from the slots offered.
- Appear on that date with your spouse, the witnesses and all originals. The Sub-Registrar verifies identity, captures signatures and photographs, and signs the register entry.
- Download the certificate from your IGRS AP account once the entry is registered, or collect it at the office.
How to apply offline at the Sub-Registrar office or Meeseva centre
- Identify the Sub-Registrar office with jurisdiction over the place of solemnisation or over either spouse's residence.
- Obtain the memorandum of marriage form, fill it, and have both parties sign it.
- Attach self-attested copies of Aadhaar, date of birth proof, address proof, the invitation card, ceremony photographs and passport-size photographs.
- Submit the file with the prescribed fee at the counter, or hand it to a Meeseva centre operator who will do the online entry for you at the published service charge, and take the acknowledgement.
- Appear on the fixed date with your spouse and witnesses, carrying originals, and sign the register before the Sub-Registrar.
How do you check the status of your application?
Log in to registration.ap.gov.in and open the application history under your account, or use the track-application option with the application number printed on your acknowledgement. The portal shows whether the file is submitted, awaiting appearance, registered, or returned for want of a document. A Meeseva-filed application is tracked with the Meeseva transaction number on the Meeseva portal.
If the file is returned, the reason is recorded against it; most often a missing document or a mismatch in a date, and you correct that specific item rather than starting a new application.
Does the certificate expire, and how are mistakes corrected?
An Andhra Pradesh marriage certificate does not expire and is never renewed. If a name is misspelt or a date is wrong in the register entry, apply to the same Sub-Registrar office for rectification, attaching the document that proves the correct particular. Additional certified copies of the entry are issued by that office on payment of the copying fee, and a certified copy is what a passport office or consulate should be given when it asks for an original rather than a photocopy.
Why do Andhra Pradesh marriage registrations get rejected?
Common causes are a date of birth on the SSC certificate that does not match the memorandum; address proof outside the chosen Sub-Registrar's jurisdiction; no invitation card or ceremony photograph to evidence solemnisation; witnesses who do not attend or who arrive without original identity documents; a second marriage filed without the divorce decree or death certificate; and Aadhaar details that do not match the names entered on the memorandum. Files also lapse when a couple misses the booked appointment and never re-books.
Where do you complain if the Sub-Registrar office delays?
Raise the matter first with the Sub-Registrar handling the file, quoting your application number and the date of submission. If that does not resolve it, escalate to the District Registrar of the district, who supervises Sub-Registrar offices, and then to the Inspector General of Registration and Stamps, Andhra Pradesh, whose office is reachable through the contact page on registration.ap.gov.in. A written complaint that names the service, the application number, the appointment date and the officer is far more effective than repeated visits to the counter.

Frequently asked questions
Which portal issues the marriage certificate in Andhra Pradesh?
The Registration and Stamps Department portal at registration.ap.gov.in, commonly called IGRS AP, is the official channel for marriage registration and certificate download in Andhra Pradesh. The same portal handles property registration, encumbrance certificates and market value searches, because marriage registration sits inside the registration department in Andhra Pradesh rather than in a revenue e-district system.
Who registers a marriage in Andhra Pradesh?
The jurisdictional Sub-Registrar of the Registration and Stamps Department acts as Marriage Registrar in Andhra Pradesh, and the couple must appear before that officer with witnesses. The Sub-Registrar signs the register entry, and the certificate is generated from that entry.
What is the difference between the Hindu Marriage Act and Special Marriage Act route in Andhra Pradesh?
The Hindu Marriage Act 1955 route records a marriage already solemnised between Hindus, Buddhists, Jains or Sikhs and is completed on the appointment date, while the Special Marriage Act 1954 route is the civil route for inter-faith or civil marriages and requires a 30-day public notice before the marriage can be solemnised and registered. Two witnesses attend for the first route and three for the second.
Where do we have to register the marriage?
Register at the Sub-Registrar office having jurisdiction over the place where the marriage was solemnised, or over the place where either spouse has been residing. Under the Special Marriage Act the notice must be given to the Marriage Officer of a district where at least one party has resided for not less than thirty days immediately before the notice.
Can we get a duplicate marriage certificate in Andhra Pradesh?
Yes — you apply to the same Sub-Registrar office that holds the register entry, or through the IGRS AP portal, for a certified copy of the marriage entry on payment of the prescribed copying fee. A certified copy carries the same evidentiary value as the original certificate.
Does an Andhra Pradesh marriage certificate expire?
No, a marriage certificate never expires and is never renewed in Andhra Pradesh. The same certificate remains valid for passport, visa, bank nomination, pension and property purposes for life.
Do both spouses have to be physically present?
Yes, both husband and wife must appear in person before the Sub-Registrar along with the witnesses on the appointment date. Andhra Pradesh does not register a marriage on uploaded documents alone, and a representative holding a power of attorney cannot stand in for a spouse.
Do we need an agent or a Meeseva broker to register?
No, you do not need an agent — a couple can file the memorandum on registration.ap.gov.in themselves, or have a Meeseva centre do the data entry at that centre's published service charge. Brokers outside Sub-Registrar offices charge many times the government fee for the same appointment.
