What is Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

Mahtari Vandan Yojana is a direct cash-transfer scheme run by the Women and Child Development Department of the Government of Chhattisgarh. The scheme pays Rs 1,000 every month into the individual bank account of an eligible woman, which adds up to Rs 12,000 in a year.

"Mahtari" is the Chhattisgarhi word for mother, and the scheme is widely searched as Mahtari Vandana Yojana and Mahatari Vandan Yojna. Whatever the spelling, the scheme is the same one administered from mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in.

The Chhattisgarh government notified the scheme in early 2024. Registration ran from 5 February 2024 to 20 February 2024, with a correction and objection window that closed on 25 February 2024. The first instalment was released on 10 March 2024, ahead of International Women's Day observances that year, and payments have continued month by month since.

According to the Women and Child Development Department portal, the stated aims are three: to strengthen the economic self-reliance of women, to improve the health and nutrition status of women and their dependants, and to strengthen the role women play in decisions inside the family. The single-woman bank account condition follows directly from that third aim, the money is meant to land in an account the woman herself controls.

Who is eligible for Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

A woman qualifies if:

  • She is a permanent resident of Chhattisgarh.
  • She is married, and has completed 21 years of age as on 1 January of the year in which she applies.
  • She holds a bank account in her own name, Aadhaar-seeded and DBT-enabled.
  • She belongs to a family that does not fall in any exclusion category below.

Widowed, divorced and destitute (parityakta) women were brought within the same scheme, so a woman need not have a living husband to draw the benefit. A widow attaches her husband's death certificate; a divorced woman attaches the decree; a destitute woman gives a declaration certified by the local verifying officer.

A woman is not eligible, she cannot apply; if:

  • Any member of her family is an income tax payer.
  • Any member of her family holds a Class I, Class II or Class III post in a department, undertaking, board, corporation or local body of the Government of India or the State Government, on a permanent, temporary or contractual basis. Class IV staff are not excluded on this ground.
  • Any member of her family is a sitting or former Member of Parliament or Member of the Legislative Assembly, or holds an equivalent office such as chairperson or director of a government board or corporation.
  • She is below 21 years of age on the reference date.
  • She is not a resident of Chhattisgarh.

A woman already receiving a monthly pension of Rs 1,000 or more under another state or central social security pension does not get the full Rs 1,000 on top; where her existing pension is less than Rs 1,000, only the difference is paid so that the total reaches Rs 1,000 a month. Retired government staff drawing pension are treated under the family-exclusion rules above.

What documents are required for Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

Document Mandatory Notes
Aadhaar card Yes Basis for identity and age verification
Own bank account passbook Yes Individual account only, Aadhaar-seeded and DBT-enabled
Residence proof Yes Domicile certificate, ration card or voter ID
Marital status proof Yes Marriage certificate, death certificate, divorce decree or declaration

The portal's own checklist is short, Aadhaar plus a bank-registered mobile number — because the remaining documents are verified locally by the Anganwadi worker and the supervisor rather than uploaded.

How to apply for Mahtari Vandan Yojana

  1. Open the official portal at mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in and select the online application link when a registration window is open.
  2. Enter your Aadhaar number and mobile number, and verify the OTP sent to the mobile registered with your bank.
  3. Fill the form with your name exactly as printed on Aadhaar, date of birth, marital status, district, block, Gram Panchayat or ward, and your individual bank account number and IFSC code.
  4. Upload the photograph and supporting documents, then submit the form.
  5. Save or print the application number shown on the acknowledgement screen; every later status check needs it.
  6. If you prefer the offline route, collect the printed form at your Anganwadi centre (rural), ward office or Gram Panchayat office, fill it in Hindi, attach self-attested copies, and hand it to the Anganwadi worker, who makes the online entry on your behalf and gives you the acknowledgement.

After submission the Anganwadi worker or supervisor verifies the details, the provisional list is published for objections, and the final approved list is released. Rejections and objections are decided at the project or district level before final approval.

How much does Mahtari Vandan Yojana pay and when?

Mahtari Vandan Yojana pays Rs 1,000 per month, credited by Direct Benefit Transfer. The transfer for a month is normally released in the first week of the following month, in a single bulk run for all approved beneficiaries in the state, so a delay of a few days is normal and does not mean rejection.

No part of the money is paid in cash, by cheque or through a middleman. If anyone tells a beneficiary that a share of the Rs 1,000 must be paid to release the rest, that is fraud and should be reported to the district Women and Child Development office.

How to check your Mahtari Vandan Yojana status

  1. Open mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in.
  2. Select the application status or payment status option from the menu.
  3. Enter your application number, or your registered mobile number, and the captcha.
  4. Read the result: it shows whether the form is approved, pending or rejected, and lists the instalments released with their dates.

The portal also carries the beneficiary lists, the scheme's government orders and the affidavit formats, so a beneficiary who is told something different by an agent can check the original order directly.

Why Mahtari Vandan applications get rejected

  • Joint bank account given instead of an individual account. The single most frequent cause.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded or DBT not activated, so the transfer fails at the bank end even after approval.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank passbook and the application form.
  • Age below 21 on 1 January of the application year.
  • Exclusion triggered, an income-tax-paying family member or a family member in a Class I to III government post.
  • Duplicate application submitted both online and through the Anganwadi centre.

Most of these are fixable. For a DBT problem, visit the bank branch, ask for Aadhaar seeding with NPCI mapping, and confirm the account is not dormant. For a name mismatch, correct the record at the bank or through Aadhaar update, then raise a grievance on the portal so the department re-runs the payment.

Where to complain about Mahtari Vandan Yojana

  • Helpline: +91-771-2220006
  • Email: dirwcd.cg@gov.in
  • Online grievance: the complaint registration and complaint status links on mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in
  • In person: the District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development, in your district collectorate, or the project office of the Integrated Child Development Services in your block

Registration and grievance redressal are both free. Keep your application number and your bank passbook with you when you complain, because the department traces a failed instalment through the account number rather than the name.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does Mahtari Vandan Yojana give?

Mahtari Vandan Yojana pays Rs 1,000 per month, which works out to Rs 12,000 a year. The amount is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer into the beneficiary's own Aadhaar-linked bank account, usually in the first week of the following month. There is no cash payment and no cheque.

Who is eligible for Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

Married women who are permanent residents of Chhattisgarh and have completed 21 years of age as on 1 January of the application year are eligible. Widowed, divorced and destitute women were later brought into the same scheme. The applicant must hold a bank account in her own name.

Who cannot get Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

A woman is not eligible if any member of her family pays income tax, holds a Class I, II or III post in a government department, undertaking, board or local body on a permanent, temporary or contract basis, or is a sitting or former MP or MLA. Women already drawing Rs 1,000 or more a month from another government pension scheme receive only the difference.

Can I still apply for Mahtari Vandan Yojana now?

The statewide registration window ran from 5 February 2024 to 20 February 2024, and no fresh general window has been announced since. Check mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in or your Anganwadi centre before paying anyone to "get your name added" — no agent can do that.

How do I check my Mahtari Vandan Yojana payment status?

Open mahtarivandan.cgstate.gov.in and use the "Application / Payment Status" option with your application number or your registered mobile number. The screen shows whether your form was approved, rejected or is pending, and the date each monthly instalment was released.

Why has my Mahtari Vandan instalment stopped?

The most common cause is a bank account that is not Aadhaar-seeded or not DBT-enabled, so the transfer bounces back. Other reasons are a joint account instead of an individual one, a name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record, a closed or dormant account, or an objection raised during verification.

Is a joint bank account accepted for Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

No. The Women and Child Development Department portal states clearly that the woman must have her own individual bank account. A joint account held with a husband or son will not receive the transfer, and the money returns to the treasury.

Is there any fee to register for Mahtari Vandan Yojana?

No. Registration is free, whether done online on the state portal or offline at an Anganwadi centre, ward office or Gram Panchayat office. No Anganwadi worker, supervisor or agent is authorised to charge for the form, the entry or the approval.
