What is Chhattisgarh Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?

Chhattisgarh Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana is a marriage assistance scheme of the Women and Child Development Department, Government of Chhattisgarh, that meets the cost of a daughter's wedding in a poor family. The scheme is delivered through the Anganwadi network and the district administration, and the wedding itself is held as a mass marriage ceremony rather than a private function funded by cash.

According to the state's district scheme pages, the programme was framed with four stated aims: to remove the financial burden a wedding places on a poor household, to discourage extravagance and encourage simple marriage, to raise the self-respect of the families through a dignified collective ceremony, and to prevent dowry transactions. The last of these is why the money is not handed to the family as cash.

The assistance per girl was increased to Rs 50,000 in the 2023-24 Chhattisgarh budget, up from Rs 25,000. Before 2019 the figure was Rs 15,000. Older district web pages still describe the Rs 25,000 structure with a breakup of Rs 5,000 for articles for the bride, Rs 14,000 for gift items, Rs 1,000 as a bank draft in the bride's name and the remainder towards the cost of the ceremony. That breakup shows how the scheme is designed even where the total has since changed, so confirm the current amount and split with your district Women and Child Development office before you plan around a figure.

The scheme is commonly written in Hindi as Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana.

Who is eligible for Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?

A family qualifies if:

  • The family is resident in Chhattisgarh.
  • The family is below the poverty line, or holds a card under the state's Chief Minister food grain scheme.
  • The bride has completed 18 years of age.
  • The family is claiming for not more than two daughters in total.
  • The marriage is being solemnised through the mass marriage ceremony organised by the district administration.

Additionally eligible:

  • Widows, orphan girls and destitute women are covered in their own right, with proof of status, without the two-daughter counting rule being used against them.

A family cannot apply if:

  • The bride is under 18 years. The application is refused and, since child marriage is an offence, raising such a request can invite action rather than assistance.
  • The family has already received assistance for two daughters. A third daughter is not eligible.
  • The family is above the poverty line and holds no qualifying food grain scheme card.
  • The family is not resident in Chhattisgarh.
  • The family wants cash instead of participating in the group ceremony. The design of the scheme does not allow a cash-only payout to the household.

How to apply for Chhattisgarh Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana

  1. Contact your Anganwadi worker in the village or ward and tell her you want to enrol a daughter for the coming mass marriage event. Anganwadi workers are the officially designated identifiers of beneficiaries for this scheme.
  2. Collect and fill the application form from the Anganwadi centre, the Janpad Panchayat, the urban body or the district Women and Child Development office, depending on where your district makes it available.
  3. Attach the documents: the bride's age proof, BPL or food grain scheme card, Chhattisgarh residence certificate, Aadhaar card, a bank passbook in the bride's own name, and photographs of the bride and groom.
  4. Submit the form to the Anganwadi worker, who verifies the details and sends the file through the supervisor for checking.
  5. The supervisor forwards the verified application to the district Women and Child Development Department office for sanction.
  6. Attend the scheduled mass marriage event on the date the district administration announces. The marriage is solemnised there.
  7. Receive the articles and the bank draft, and sign the distribution record. The draft is drawn in the bride's name and is credited to her own account.

What documents are needed?

Document Mandatory Notes
Bride's age proof Yes Must show 18 years completed
BPL or food grain scheme card Yes Establishes the poverty criterion
Chhattisgarh residence certificate Yes Family must be resident in the state
Bride's Aadhaar card Yes Identity and bank seeding
Bank passbook in bride's name Yes The draft is issued to the bride, not the parents
Photographs of bride and groom Yes Attached to the application
Widow, orphan or destitution proof If applicable For claims made under those categories

How is the money actually given?

The assistance is deliberately not a lump sum in cash. It reaches the bride in three forms:

  • Articles for the bride, such as clothing and household items, purchased and supplied by the department.
  • Gift items handed over at the ceremony.
  • A bank draft in the bride's own name, so the money stays with her rather than with either family.

A share of the sanctioned amount is also spent by the district administration on running the mass marriage event itself, the pandal, food and arrangements for all couples in that batch. This structure is what keeps the scheme aimed at the bride and away from dowry.

Why applications get rejected

  • Bride is under 18. No discretion exists on this point.
  • No BPL or food grain scheme card, so the poverty criterion is not met.
  • Two daughters already covered from the same family.
  • Bank account in the father's or husband's name instead of the bride's. The draft cannot be issued and the file is held up.
  • Age proof and Aadhaar disagree on date of birth. Get the records reconciled before submitting.
  • Application submitted after the district's cut-off for a particular mass marriage date. In that case the family is carried to the next scheduled event rather than rejected outright.

When are the mass marriages held?

Chhattisgarh does not publish a single statewide last date for this scheme. Instead, each district announces mass marriage events through the year, and applications are collected ahead of each one. The practical approach is to register with the Anganwadi worker as soon as a marriage is being planned, so the family is on the list when the next date is fixed. Auspicious wedding seasons see the largest events.

How the assistance amount has changed over the years

The rate under Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana has been revised twice in recent memory, and knowing the sequence explains why different sources quote different numbers:

  • Up to 2019: Rs 15,000 per girl.
  • From 2019: raised to Rs 25,000 per girl. Most district scheme pages still describe this stage, including the detailed breakup of Rs 5,000 for bridal articles, Rs 14,000 for gift items and Rs 1,000 as a bank draft.
  • From the 2023-24 state budget: raised to Rs 50,000 per girl, with a budget provision of about Rs 38 crore recorded for the scheme that year.

A family should therefore not be alarmed by a district page showing Rs 25,000. Confirm the current sanctioned rate and its component-wise split with the District Programme Officer for the event you are being enrolled in, because the split between articles, gift items, the bank draft and the event cost is decided administratively and is not a free-choice cash payout at any rate.

Where to complain or ask questions

  • Anganwadi worker and supervisor: first contact for enrolment and status.
  • District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development — the district-level authority that sanctions and disburses.
  • Women and Child Development Department, Chhattisgarh at cgwcd.gov.in, the administrative department for the scheme.

No fee is charged at any stage. If anyone asks a family for money to get a name included in the mass marriage list, that is not part of the scheme and should be reported to the District Programme Officer.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does Chhattisgarh Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana give?

The assistance was raised to Rs 50,000 per girl in the 2023-24 Chhattisgarh budget, up from Rs 25,000 earlier and Rs 15,000 before 2019. District scheme pages that still show Rs 25,000 reflect the older rate, and part of the amount reaches the bride as goods rather than cash.

How many daughters in one family can get the benefit?

A maximum of two daughters per family can be covered. A third daughter in the same family is not eligible, which is why families are asked to declare earlier claims at the time of enrolment.

What is the minimum age for the bride?

The bride must have completed 18 years. The scheme exists partly to stop child marriage, so age proof is checked strictly and an application for a bride below 18 is refused outright.

Is the marriage held individually or as a group ceremony?

Marriages under this scheme are solemnised as mass marriage ceremonies organised by the district administration. Part of the assistance is spent on the ceremony itself, which is how the scheme keeps wedding costs down for every family in the group.

Where do I apply for Kanya Vivah Yojana in Chhattisgarh?

Apply through your Anganwadi worker, who identifies eligible families and forwards the verified application through the supervisor to the district Women and Child Development office. There is no self-service online form.

Are widows and destitute women covered?

Yes. Widows, orphan girls and destitute women are eligible in addition to daughters of below-poverty-line families, and they apply through the same Anganwadi route with proof of their status.

Does the money come as cash into my hand?

No. The assistance is split. A portion is given as articles for the bride, a portion covers the cost of the mass marriage event, and a bank draft is given to the bride in her own name. Nothing is paid in cash to the family.
