Margadeepam Scholarship
Kerala state government scheme
Margadeepam Scholarship is a Kerala Minority Welfare Department scheme that pays Rs 1,500 for the academic year to school children of notified minority communities studying in Classes 1 to 8 in government and aided schools. Annual family income must be Rs 2,50,000 or less. Applications are filed through the school on margadeepam.kerala.gov.in.
What is the Margadeepam Scholarship?
Margadeepam Scholarship is a school-level scholarship run by the Directorate of Minority Welfare, Government of Kerala, for children of the state's notified minority communities. The Directorate was formed under the General Administration Department in 2008 and works for the welfare of six notified communities: Muslims, Christians of all sects, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis. Most of the Directorate's scholarships start at the post-matric stage; Margadeepam (transliterated locally as Margadeepam or Maargadeepam) is the one that reaches down to primary and upper-primary school.
According to the Margadeepam portal at margadeepam.kerala.gov.in, the scholarship pays Rs 1,500 per student for the academic year to children studying in Classes 1 to 8 in government and government-aided schools in Kerala. The portal records that 1,21,667 students received the scholarship in 2024-25, which makes it one of the largest single scholarship disbursements the Directorate handles by headcount.
Margadeepam is deliberately built around the school rather than the family. The Head Master of the institution, not the parent, is the person who logs in and pushes the application forward. That design keeps the process workable for parents of six-year-olds who may never have used a government portal, and it places document verification with someone who already knows the child.
What Margadeepam is meant to do
- Cover the small recurring costs of schooling; notebooks, uniforms, travel and study materials — for low-income minority families.
- Reduce drop-out at the primary and upper-primary stage, where a family's cash squeeze rather than the child's ability is usually what ends schooling.
- Put the money into the child's own bank account, which for many pupils is the first account opened in their name.
Who is eligible for the Margadeepam Scholarship?
A student qualifies if all of these are true:
- The student belongs to one of the six notified minority communities; Muslim, Christian (all sects), Sikh, Buddhist, Jain or Parsi.
- The student is studying in Class 1 to Class 8.
- The school is a government school or a government-aided school in Kerala.
- Annual family income is Rs 2,50,000 or less from all sources, evidenced by a Village Officer's income certificate.
- The student is a permanent resident of Kerala.
- The student has a bank account in their own name to receive the DBT credit.
Who cannot apply:
- Students from communities that are not on the notified minority list are not eligible, however low the family income.
- Students in unaided or fully self-financing schools cannot apply, because the scheme is limited to government and aided institutions.
- Students from Class 9 upwards cannot apply under Margadeepam. Higher classes are covered by other Minority Welfare schemes such as the Prof. Joseph Mundassery Scholarship Award and the C. H. Muhammedkoya Scholarship.
- Families with annual income above Rs 2,50,000 are not eligible.
- A third child from the same family cannot be selected, because the scheme caps benefits at two students per family.
Priority within the eligible pool. Applications almost always exceed the sanctioned number, so Margadeepam applies a written order of preference. Thirty percent of scholarships are reserved for girl students, with boys considered where eligible girl applicants fall short. For Classes 2 to 8, merit is measured using the grade index points of the previous year's result; for Class 1, where no previous result exists, selection rests on income alone. Children with a disability of 40 percent or more and children who have lost one or both parents are given added priority.
What documents are required for the Margadeepam Scholarship?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Family income certificate (Village Officer) | Yes | Must show annual family income of Rs 2,50,000 or less |
| Community or minority certificate (Village Officer) | Yes | Confirms one of the six notified communities |
| Copy of bank passbook | Yes | Account in the student's own name; check name, number, IFSC |
| Previous year's grade sheet | For Classes 2-8 | Supplies the grade index points used for merit ranking |
| Disability certificate | If claimed | Must show 40 percent or more disability |
| Death certificate of parent | If claimed | For the orphan / single-parent priority |
The Margadeepam portal states plainly that institutions retain these documents rather than requiring every applicant to upload scans. Parents therefore hand physical copies to the school, and the school keeps them available for inspection by the Minority Welfare Department.
How to apply for the Margadeepam Scholarship
- Collect the certificates first. Get the income certificate and the community or minority certificate from your Village Office, and open a savings account in the child's own name if one does not exist.
- Give the documents to the class teacher or Head Master, along with the previous year's grade sheet for Classes 2 to 8.
- The Head Master logs in at margadeepam.kerala.gov.in using the school's Sampoorna code credentials. Clerk logins, where a clerk does the data entry, are generated from inside the Institution Head login.
- The school enters the student's details: name, class, community, family income, disability or orphan status, and full bank account details including account number, IFSC and branch.
- The school verifies and submits the application before the notified deadline, and keeps the hard-copy documents on file.
- Take a printout or note of the application number from the school so you can follow up later.
Because the submission is institutional, a parent who applies "directly" on some other website is not in the system at all. If your child's school has not submitted, nothing has been applied for.
How do you check the Margadeepam application status?
Status is tracked through the same portal, and in practice through the school. Ask the Head Master to open the institution login and check whether the child's application shows as submitted, verified and finally sanctioned. The Directorate publishes the selected list at the end of the verification cycle; once a student appears on it, the Rs 1,500 is released by DBT to the account recorded in the application.
If the account details were wrong, the credit fails silently. The school must then correct the bank details in the portal record. Repeated failures are usually caused by an account that is not in the child's own name, a dormant account with no transactions, or a mismatch between the name on the passbook and the name on the application.
Why do Margadeepam applications get rejected?
- Income certificate above Rs 2,50,000, which is a straight disqualification.
- Missing or expired income certificate. Village Office income certificates carry a validity period; an old one is refused at verification.
- Community certificate not produced, so the minority status is unproven.
- Student in an unaided school, which falls outside the scheme.
- Bank account in a parent's name instead of the student's own name.
- Previous grade sheet not attached for Classes 2 to 8, which leaves the application without merit points and pushes it down the ranking.
- Third application from the same family, breaching the two-student cap.
- School missed the deadline. This is the most frustrating cause, because the family did everything right. Follow up with the Head Master well before the closing date rather than after it.
When can you apply for Margadeepam?
Margadeepam runs one window per academic year, notified by the Directorate of Minority Welfare. The window typically opens after the school year settles, in the second half of the calendar year, and gives students a date to hand papers to the school and a slightly later date for the school itself to complete online submission. The Margadeepam portal currently shows the submission deadline for the running cycle extended to 29 September, 5:00 pm. Because extensions are common and are announced only on the portal, check margadeepam.kerala.gov.in directly rather than relying on a date circulated on social media.
Where do you complain if something goes wrong?
- Directorate of Minority Welfare helpline: 0471-2300524 and 0471-2300523.
- Email: scholarship.mwd@gmail.com.
- Office: Directorate of Minority Welfare, 4th Floor, Vikas Bhavan, Thiruvananthapuram 695033.
Route a bank-credit failure or a data-entry error through the Head Master first, because only the institution login can amend a submitted record. Take the grievance to the Directorate when the school cannot resolve it. Margadeepam charges no application fee at any stage, and no agent has any role in getting a child's name onto the list.

Frequently asked questions
How much money does the Margadeepam Scholarship give?
Margadeepam Scholarship pays Rs 1,500 for the academic year to each selected student. The Directorate of Minority Welfare releases the amount directly into the student's own bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer, so no cash is handed out at the school. It is an annual grant, not a monthly stipend.
Which classes are covered by the Margadeepam Scholarship?
Classes 1 to 8 are covered. The child must be studying in a government school or a government-aided school in Kerala. Students in unaided or fully self-financing schools are outside the scheme, and so are students from Class 9 upwards, who are served by other Minority Welfare scholarships instead.
What is the income limit for the Margadeepam Scholarship?
Annual family income must be Rs 2,50,000 or less from all sources. The Margadeepam portal treats the Village Officer's income certificate as the proof of this, and an income certificate that shows a higher figure will get the application rejected at the verification stage.
Who applies — the student or the school?
The school does the online submission. A parent fills the application details and hands the supporting documents to the Head Master, who verifies them and forwards the application on margadeepam.kerala.gov.in using the school's Sampoorna code login. Documents are retained at the institution rather than uploaded one by one.
Is there a reservation for girls in the Margadeepam Scholarship?
Yes, 30 percent of the scholarships are earmarked for girl students. Where there are not enough eligible girl applicants in a district, the remaining seats are filled by boys, so the reservation sets a floor rather than a ceiling.
How many children from one family can get Margadeepam?
Up to two children from the same family can receive the scholarship. Each child needs a separate application and a separate bank account in their own name.
Why did the Margadeepam scholarship money not reach the bank account?
The commonest reason is a bank account problem — an account not in the child's own name, an account that is dormant, a wrong IFSC code, or an account that is not Aadhaar-seeded. Check the account details with the Head Master first, because the Directorate does not re-issue a failed DBT credit until the corrected details reach it.
