Vidyakiranam Scheme — Educational Assistance to Children of Disabled Parents
Kerala state government scheme
Vidyakiranam is a Kerala Social Justice Department scholarship that pays children of parents with 40 percent or more disability from Rs 300 to Rs 1,000 for a 10-month academic year, depending on the class studied. Applicants must be from a BPL family and study in a government-approved institution. Apply online on the Suneethi portal.
What is the Vidyakiranam scheme?
Vidyakiranam is an educational assistance scheme run by the Department of Social Justice, Government of Kerala, for children of parents with disability. The department's own title for it is "Vidyakiranam scheme: Educational assistance to children of disabled parents", and the name is often written in Malayalam transliteration as Vidyakiranam, meaning ray of learning.
Vidyakiranam addresses a specific gap. Kerala already runs scholarships for students who themselves have a disability. Vidyakiranam is for the other case: the student has no disability, but the father or mother does, and the family's earning capacity has fallen because of it. According to the Social Justice Department scheme page, the assistance goes to children of differently abled parents, where either one parent or both parents have a disability, who are economically deprived.
The scholarship is deliberately modest and is meant to cover the running costs of an academic year: notebooks, uniforms, bus fare, exam fees. It is paid for a duration of 10 months and given as a one-time assistance for each class, which means a student re-applies as they move up a class rather than receiving an automatic renewal.
How much does Vidyakiranam pay?
| Class or course | Scholarship |
|---|---|
| Standards 1 to 5 | Rs 300 |
| Standards 6 to 10 | Rs 500 |
| Plus One, Plus Two, ITI and equivalent courses | Rs 750 |
| Degree, post-graduation, polytechnic, equivalent courses, training courses, professional courses | Rs 1,000 |
The Social Justice Department publishes these four slabs and states that the scholarship covers a 10-month duration for all classes. The money is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer to the student's bank account, or to a parent's account where the student is too young to hold one.
A reader's allowance is available for blind students under the department's scholarship arrangements. Because that rate is notified separately and revised from time to time, confirm the current figure with your District Social Justice Office rather than assuming it.
Who is eligible for Vidyakiranam?
You can apply if:
- Your father or mother has 40 percent or more disability, certified by the district Medical Board.
- Your family belongs to the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category, shown by a BPL ration card or an income certificate from the concerned Village Officer.
- You are studying at a government-approved institution.
- You secured admission in the merit quota where the institution is private, self-financing or autonomous.
- You are a permanent resident of Kerala.
You cannot apply: or are not eligible — if:
- You are already benefiting from another educational assistance scheme. The guidelines exclude such students outright.
- You are studying at a parallel college. The department states these students need not apply.
- You are doing a part-time course.
- Your admission at a private, self-financing or autonomous institution was in the management quota rather than merit quota.
- Your parent's disability is below 40 percent on the Medical Board certificate.
- Your family is above the poverty line and holds no supporting income certificate.
- Your institution is not government-approved.
One point works in families' favour. The department's guidelines say assistance will be granted to all studying children of differently abled parents, so a household with three school-going children can claim for each of them, at the slab rate applicable to each child's class. Each child files a separate application.
What documents are required for Vidyakiranam?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |

| BPL ration card or income certificate | Yes | Income certificate from the concerned Village Officer |
| Disability ID card of the parent | Yes | Attested copy |

| Bank passbook copy | Yes | For DBT credit |
| Aadhaar card of the student | Yes | Identity verification |

The Social Justice Department lists the BPL ration card or Village Officer income certificate, the Medical Board certificate showing disability percentage, and the attested disability ID card copy directly in its eligibility criteria, so these three are the papers that decide most applications.

When should I apply for Vidyakiranam?
Vidyakiranam applications are called at the start of each academic year, after the student's admission is confirmed and a bonafide certificate can be issued. Because the assistance is granted as a one-time payment for each class, a student who received it in Standard 8 applies again in Standard 9 to there is no automatic carry-forward.
The Social Justice Department has not published a single statewide last date for the scheme. District Social Justice Officers announce the window locally and process applications against the district's sanctioned number of beneficiaries for the financial year. Check the Suneethi portal notice board and your District Social Justice Office at the beginning of the academic year rather than waiting for a newspaper advertisement.
How do I check my Vidyakiranam application status?
- Log in to suneethi.sjd.kerala.gov.in with your registered credentials.
- Open the track application option in your citizen dashboard.
- Enter the application number from your acknowledgement.
- Follow up with the District Social Justice Office by phone if the status has not changed for several weeks after the district's scrutiny period.
Why Vidyakiranam applications get rejected
- Parent's disability below 40 percent on the Medical Board certificate.
- No BPL proof: neither a BPL ration card nor a Village Officer income certificate.
- Another scholarship already drawn for the same academic year.
- Parallel college or part-time course enrolment.
- Management-quota admission at a self-financing or private institution.
- Bonafide certificate missing or not signed by the head of institution.
- Bank account name mismatch, which stops the DBT credit even after sanction.
- Duplicate application filed both online and offline for the same student.
If your application is rejected for a document defect, correct the paper and apply again in the next round through Suneethi. Ask the District Social Justice Office for the recorded reason before you re-file.

A student from a Below Poverty Line family whose father or mother has 40 percent or more disability is eligible. The student must be studying in a government-approved institution, and must not be drawing another educational assistance scholarship for the same year.
Can I get Vidyakiranam if I already have another scholarship?
No. The Social Justice Department guideline states plainly that those benefiting from other educational assistance schemes are not eligible to apply under Vidyakiranam. You must choose one.

No. The guidelines say students pursuing courses at parallel colleges and those doing part-time courses need not apply. The course must be at a government-approved institution.
Can students at self-financing colleges apply for Vidyakiranam?
Yes, but only if the admission was in the merit quota. The scheme states that scholarship will be provided to students who secured admission in merit quota at private, self-financing or autonomous educational institutions. Management-quota admissions are outside the scheme.
