What is the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Scholarship Scheme?

Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit Scholarship Scheme is a targeted student aid programme of the Secondary Education Department's Sanskrit Shiksha section, which pays a small monthly scholarship to every student enrolled in a recognised Sanskrit school or college in Uttar Pradesh.

Uttar Pradesh has the largest network of traditional Sanskrit institutions of any Indian state, Sanskrit pathshalas and vidyalayas teaching the classical sequence of Prathama, Purva Madhyama, Uttar Madhyama, Shastri and Acharya, which map roughly onto Classes 6 to 8, Classes 9 to 10, Classes 11 to 12, graduation and post-graduation. Enrolment in these institutions has historically been drawn from low-income families, and the scholarship exists to keep that pipeline from thinning further.

The most consequential recent change is administrative rather than financial. The state government removed the condition that family income must be below Rs 50,000 a year, which had excluded a large share of Sanskrit students on a paperwork technicality. The income certificate; rather than on any real measure of need. With that condition gone, the scheme covers all students of recognised Sanskrit institutions in the state.

At one distribution event the Chief Minister released scholarships to 69,195 students, worth about Rs 586 lakh, which is a useful indication of both the enrolment base and the modest per-student amount.

How much does the Sanskrit scholarship pay?

The scholarship is a monthly amount that rises with the level of study:

Level Classes Monthly scholarship
Prathama Classes 6 and 7 Rs 50
Prathama Class 8 Rs 75
Purva Madhyama Classes 9 and 10 Rs 100
Uttar Madhyama Classes 11 and 12 Rs 200
Shastri and Acharya Graduation and post-graduation About Rs 200 to Rs 250

Over a full academic year this works out to roughly Rs 600 at the lowest level and around Rs 3,000 at the highest. These are modest amounts and no family should plan an education budget around them; the scheme's role is to defray books, materials and travel, and to keep a student formally on the rolls.

Payment is made by Direct Benefit Transfer into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account of the student, or of the guardian for younger students. Nothing passes through the institution in cash.

Who is eligible for the Sanskrit Scholarship Scheme?

You can claim the scholarship if:

  • You are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh and hold a domicile certificate.
  • You are enrolled in a recognised Sanskrit school or college located in Uttar Pradesh, and that institution is registered on the state scholarship portal.
  • You are at Class 6 or above, up to Acharya level.
  • You maintain the attendance your institution certifies, and you have passed the previous year rather than repeating it.
  • You have an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in your own or your guardian's name.

You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:

  • You are not domiciled in Uttar Pradesh, even if you are studying at a Sanskrit institution inside the state.
  • Your institution is not recognised or is not registered on scholarship.up.gov.in. Students at unrecognised pathshalas find they cannot select their institution in the portal's dropdown, and that is the reason.
  • You are below Class 6. The scheme begins at Class 6.
  • You are repeating the same class or year for which the scholarship was already drawn.
  • You are drawing another government scholarship for the same year of study, since two scholarships for one academic year are not allowed.

Notably, family income is no longer a bar. A student whose family exceeds any earlier income line is still eligible, which is the single most useful fact about this scheme for a reader who was refused in an earlier year.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
Aadhaar card Yes For OTR and bank seeding
UP domicile certificate Yes Tehsil-issued
Bonafide certificate or admission receipt Yes From the Sanskrit institution
Previous year mark sheet Yes Confirms progression
Attendance certificate Yes Certified by the institution
Aadhaar-seeded bank passbook Yes Student's or guardian's account

Because the income certificate requirement has been removed for this stream, students should not be asked for one. If an institution insists on it, ask them to check the current government order on the Sanskrit education stream.

How to apply for the Sanskrit Scholarship

  1. Open scholarship.up.gov.in and complete One Time Registration (OTR) with your Aadhaar number and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP. Save the OTR number.
  2. Register in the Sanskrit education stream for the current session, selecting your level — Prathama, Purva Madhyama, Uttar Madhyama, Shastri or Acharya, and your institution from the list. Note the registration number and password issued.
  3. Log in and complete the full application form, entering your enrolment details, previous examination result, attendance, and the bank account number with IFSC.
  4. Upload the scanned documents in the prescribed sizes and click Final Submit. A saved but unsubmitted form is not an application.
  5. Print the submitted form, sign it, attach photocopies of the documents, and hand it to the principal of your Sanskrit institution before the hard copy date.
  6. Ask the institution to forward the application online to the District Inspector of Schools. An unforwarded form is invisible to the department.

Students without a device can use a Common Service Centre (Jan Seva Kendra) or their institution's computer for the online part, but the printed form must still be handed to the principal in person.

How to check the status of a Sanskrit scholarship

  1. Open scholarship.up.gov.in and select Status.
  2. Choose the Sanskrit education stream and the session.
  3. Enter your registration number, roll number and date of birth.

The status shows whether the institution forwarded the form, whether the district officer approved it, and whether the payment has been pushed. A status of paid with no credit in the account is nearly always a bank problem. An inactive account or one not seeded with Aadhaar.

Why Sanskrit scholarship applications fail

  • Institution not registered on the scholarship portal, which blocks every student of that institution. The institution, not the student, has to fix this with the District Inspector of Schools.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar seeded with NPCI mapping.
  • Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank record and the institution's records.
  • Institution did not forward the application online.
  • Hard copy not submitted to the principal.
  • Attendance shortfall certified by the institution.
  • Repeating the same year, which disqualifies the claim for that year.

Renewal in the following year

Renewal is not automatic. A continuing student has to file a renewal application in the next session's window, showing that they passed the previous year and maintained attendance. Renewal windows in the Uttar Pradesh scholarship calendar typically close earlier than fresh application windows, which catches out students who assume the same deadline applies to both. Read the dates for your stream on scholarship.up.gov.in each year rather than assuming last year's calendar.

Where to get help

  • Principal of your Sanskrit institution, who forwards the application and is the first point of escalation.
  • District Inspector of Schools (DIoS) of your district, who handles institution registration and district-level approval for the Sanskrit stream.
  • scholarship.up.gov.in, which publishes the session calendar, government orders and the current helpline numbers for each stream.
  • Jansunwai portal at jansunwai.up.nic.in, for a trackable written grievance if a verified application is not paid.

Applying is free. No institution or agent may charge a student to forward or approve a Sanskrit scholarship application.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Uttar Pradesh Sanskrit scholarship?

The scholarship runs from Rs 50 a month for Classes 6 and 7 up to about Rs 250 a month at the higher levels — Rs 75 for Class 8, Rs 100 for Classes 9 and 10, and Rs 200 for Classes 11 and 12, with graduate and postgraduate Sanskrit students in the Rs 200 to Rs 250 range.

Is there an income limit for the Sanskrit scholarship?

No. The Uttar Pradesh government removed the earlier condition that family income must be below Rs 50,000 a year, so every student enrolled in a recognised Sanskrit institution in the state can claim the scholarship regardless of family income.

Which levels of Sanskrit study are covered?

Classes 6 to 8 (Prathama), Classes 9 and 10 (Purva Madhyama), Classes 11 and 12 (Uttar Madhyama), and higher Sanskrit degrees including Shastri and Acharya are covered. Coverage begins at Class 6, not at Class 1.

Who cannot claim the Sanskrit scholarship?

Students who are not domiciled in Uttar Pradesh are not eligible, and neither are students of institutions that are not recognised Sanskrit schools or colleges registered on the state scholarship portal. Students repeating a class they already drew the scholarship for are also excluded.

Where is the Sanskrit scholarship application filed?

Applications are filed on the common Uttar Pradesh scholarship portal, scholarship.up.gov.in, in the Sanskrit education stream, after completing One Time Registration. The signed printout goes to the principal of the Sanskrit institution.

How is the money paid?

The scholarship is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer into the Aadhaar-seeded bank account of the student or the guardian. No cash is handed out and no money passes through the institution.

How many students does the scheme reach?

At one distribution the Chief Minister released scholarships to 69,195 Sanskrit students worth about Rs 586 lakh, which gives a sense of the scale of enrolment in the state's recognised Sanskrit institutions.

Why do Sanskrit scholarship applications fail?

Common reasons include the institution itself not being registered on the scholarship portal, a bank account not Aadhaar seeded with NPCI mapping, a name mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank record and the institution's records, the institution not forwarding the application online, the signed hard copy not submitted to the principal, an attendance shortfall, or repeating the same class the scholarship was already drawn for.
