Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme (Pre-Matric and Post-Matric)
Uttar Pradesh state government scheme
Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme pays pre-matric and post-matric scholarships to students of Classes 9 to 12 and higher courses whose family income is within Rs 2 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh a year, depending on category. Students apply free online at scholarship.up.gov.in after completing a One Time Registration.
What is the Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme?
Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme is the state's single largest student welfare programme, run by the Social Welfare Department (Samaj Kalyan Vibhag) of the Government of Uttar Pradesh in coordination with the Backward Classes Welfare Department, the Minority Welfare Department and the Tribal Welfare Department. All four departments pay through one common portal, scholarship.up.gov.in, which is why students see a single application even though the money reaches them from different budget heads.
The scheme is not one scholarship but a family of scholarships grouped into two blocks:
- Pre-matric scholarship, for students of Classes 9 and 10, and in some category streams Classes 11 and 12 where they are treated as pre-matric.
- Post-matric scholarship, called Dashmottar in the Uttar Pradesh portal's own language, for students of Class 11 and above including undergraduate, postgraduate, technical, medical, engineering, management and diploma courses.
Both blocks pay through Direct Benefit Transfer into the student's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account, routed through the Public Financial Management System. No cash and no cheque is issued, and no money passes through the college.
The scheme covers Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Other Backward Class, Minority and General (EWS) students. The General-category stream is what many students search for as "UP scholarship for general category", and it is real. It is administered by the Social Welfare Department under the same income ceiling structure.
Who is eligible for the UP Scholarship Scheme?
You can claim the scholarship if:
- You are domiciled in Uttar Pradesh and hold a tehsil-issued domicile certificate.
- You are studying in a recognised institution, that is, a school affiliated to a recognised board or a college affiliated to a recognised university, and that institution is registered on the scholarship portal.
- Your annual family income is within the ceiling for your category and stage: Rs 2.50 lakh for all pre-matric students and for SC and ST post-matric students, and Rs 2 lakh for General, OBC and Minority post-matric students.
- You have completed One Time Registration (OTR) on the portal with your Aadhaar number.
- You hold a bank account in your own name, seeded with your Aadhaar.
You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:
- You are not domiciled in Uttar Pradesh, even if you study inside the state.
- You are repeating the same class or year that you already drew a scholarship for. The scheme funds progression, not repetition.
- Your family income exceeds the category ceiling, or your income certificate cannot be verified against the e-District database.
- You are already drawing another government scholarship for the same course in the same year. Two scholarships for one year of study are not permitted.
- Your institution is not recognised or not registered on scholarship.up.gov.in. This is the reason many private-institute students find they cannot even select their college name in the dropdown.
- Your bank account is a joint account or a parent's account. The account must be the student's own.
How much money does the UP Scholarship pay?
Amounts differ by category, stage and whether the student is a day scholar or a hosteller, and the Social Welfare Department revises the rates by government order. The broad, published pattern is:
| Stream | Indicative annual amount |
|---|---|
| General category, Classes 9-10 | About Rs 3,000 per year |
| Scheduled Caste, day scholar | About Rs 3,500 per year |
| Scheduled Caste, hosteller | About Rs 7,000 per year |
| Scheduled Tribe and Minority | About Rs 225 per month plus an annual grant of about Rs 750 |
| Other Backward Class, Classes 9-10 | About Rs 3,000 per year |
For post-matric courses, the payment has two parts: a maintenance allowance and a fee reimbursement. Fee reimbursement is capped at the fee approved for that course and that institution by the state fee-fixation committee, so a private college charging above the approved fee will only see the approved portion reimbursed, and the student pays the difference.
Because rate revisions are issued year to year by government order, treat the table above as indicative and confirm the current rate for your exact category and course on the government order section of scholarship.up.gov.in.
What documents are required for the UP Scholarship?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Needed for OTR and bank seeding |
| UP domicile certificate | Yes | Tehsil-issued |
| Family income certificate | Yes | e-District issued, current financial year |
| Caste certificate | Only SC/ST/OBC | Not needed for General or EWS |
| Previous year mark sheet | Yes | Proves progression |
| Admission and fee receipt | Yes | Current enrolment and fee charged |
| Aadhaar-seeded bank passbook | Yes | Student's own account only |
| Passport photograph | Yes | Uploaded in prescribed size |
Both the income certificate and the caste certificate are verified electronically against the e-District database using the certificate application number. A certificate that exists on paper but does not resolve online will fail, so always enter the application number exactly as printed.
How to apply for the UP Scholarship online
- Open scholarship.up.gov.in and complete One Time Registration (OTR) using your Aadhaar number and an Aadhaar-linked mobile number for OTP. Save the OTR number that is generated; it stays with you for your whole student career.
- Select Student → Registration, then pick your stage (Pre-Matric or Dashmottar) and your category (SC/ST, General, OBC or Minority).
- Fill the registration form with your name exactly as printed on the Class 10 mark sheet, your date of birth, your institution and your course. Submit and note the registration number and password shown on screen.
- Log in again as a registered student and complete the full application form, entering your income certificate application number, caste certificate application number where applicable, bank account number and IFSC.
- Upload the scanned documents in the sizes the portal specifies, then click Final Submit. Nothing is sent to the department until Final Submit is done — a saved draft is not an application.
- Take a printout of the submitted form, sign it, attach photocopies of the documents, and hand it to your institution's scholarship clerk or principal before the hard copy deadline.
- Ask the institution to forward your form online. The district officer can only see forms that the institution has forwarded.
How to apply offline or with help
Uttar Pradesh Scholarship Scheme has no purely offline route; every application must exist on scholarship.up.gov.in. Students without their own device can use:
- A Common Service Centre (Jan Seva Kendra), which will fill and upload the form for a government-notified service charge.
- The institution's own computer lab, which most schools and colleges open during the application window.
- The district Social Welfare Office or the Backward Classes Welfare Office, which run help desks during the fresh application window.
The printed hard copy, however, is always submitted physically to the institution. That step is offline and it is the one students most often skip.
How to check UP Scholarship status and payment
- Open scholarship.up.gov.in and select Status.
- Choose your stage and category, then enter your registration number, board or university roll number and date of birth.
- Read the stage shown. Typical stages are Application submitted to institution, Forwarded by institution, Verified by district officer, Sent to PFMS and Amount transferred.
If the status shows Amount transferred but no credit has reached your account, the failure is almost always at the bank: an inactive account, an account not seeded with Aadhaar, or a closed account. Fix the account first, then ask the district Social Welfare Office to re-push the payment in the next PFMS cycle.
Why UP Scholarship applications get rejected, and how to fix them
- Bank account not Aadhaar seeded. Visit the branch and ask for Aadhaar seeding with NPCI mapping, not just "Aadhaar linked in KYC".
- Name mismatch across Aadhaar, bank and school records. Correct the Aadhaar or the bank record so all three read identically, including middle names.
- Income certificate verification failure. Get a fresh e-District income certificate for the current financial year and re-enter the application number.
- Institution did not forward the form. Follow up in person; an unforwarded form is invisible to the department and will lapse at the deadline.
- Hard copy not submitted. The online form alone is not enough for most streams; submit the signed printout.
- Duplicate or repeat claim. A student who failed and is repeating the same year cannot draw the scholarship again for that year.
Key dates for 2026-27
According to the scholarship portal's published calendar, fresh applications for Classes 9 to 12 run from 11 August to 21 September 2026, renewal for those classes closes on 25 August 2026, fresh Dashmottar applications run from 15 September to 31 October 2026, and Dashmottar renewal closes on 15 October 2026. The department has extended these dates in several past years, but no student should plan around an extension.
Where to complain about a UP Scholarship problem
- District Social Welfare Officer, for SC, ST and General category cases.
- District Backward Classes Welfare Officer, for OBC cases.
- District Minority Welfare Officer, for Minority cases.
- Jansunwai portal at jansunwai.up.nic.in, the state's integrated grievance system, where a scholarship complaint can be registered against the district office and tracked by reference number.
- The helpline numbers published on scholarship.up.gov.in for the relevant category, which change between sessions and should be read off the live portal rather than copied from a news article.
Applying is free. If any person offers to "get your scholarship passed" for money, that is a fraud and should be reported through Jansunwai.

Frequently asked questions
What is the income limit for the UP Scholarship Scheme?
The family income ceiling is Rs 2.50 lakh a year for all pre-matric applicants and for SC and ST post-matric applicants, and Rs 2 lakh a year for General, OBC and Minority post-matric applicants. The income certificate must be issued by the tehsildar through the e-District system and must be current.
When do UP Scholarship applications open in 2026-27?
Fresh applications for Classes 9 to 12 run from 11 August to 21 September 2026, and fresh Dashmottar (post-matric) applications from 15 September to 31 October 2026. Renewal for Classes 9 to 12 closes on 25 August 2026 and Dashmottar renewal on 15 October 2026. The Social Welfare Department revises this calendar every year, so check scholarship.up.gov.in.
Is One Time Registration compulsory for UP Scholarship?
Yes. Every student must complete One Time Registration (OTR) on scholarship.up.gov.in before filling any scholarship form. OTR creates a permanent student ID linked to Aadhaar, so the same student cannot register twice or claim two scholarships in one year.
Can a student from outside Uttar Pradesh apply?
No. Students who are not domiciled in Uttar Pradesh are not eligible, even if they are studying in a college inside the state. A Uttar Pradesh domicile certificate issued by the tehsil is a mandatory upload.
Why do UP Scholarship applications get rejected?
The commonest rejection reasons are a bank account that is not Aadhaar seeded, a name mismatch between Aadhaar, the bank and the school record, an income certificate that fails online verification against the e-District database, and failure to submit the printed application to the institution before the hard copy deadline.
Does the UP Scholarship cover college fees?
Post-matric scholarships include a fee reimbursement component alongside the maintenance allowance, subject to the fee actually approved for that course and institution by the state fee-fixation committee. Pre-matric scholarships for Classes 9 and 10 are maintenance grants and do not reimburse fees.
How do I check my UP Scholarship status?
Open scholarship.up.gov.in, choose Status, and enter your registration number, board or university roll number and date of birth. The status page shows whether the institution has forwarded the form, whether the district officer has approved it, and whether payment has been pushed through PFMS.
Is there any fee to apply for the UP Scholarship?
No. Applying on scholarship.up.gov.in is free. A cyber cafe may charge for typing assistance, but no institution, agent or official may charge money to forward or approve a scholarship application.
