UP Sadhu Pension Yojana (Pension for Sadhus and Sants in Uttar Pradesh)
Uttar Pradesh state government scheme
UP Sadhu Pension Yojana was announced in 2019 for destitute sadhus, and today eligible sadhus aged 60 and above draw the state's regular old age pension of Rs 1,000 a month, released quarterly as Rs 3,000. There is no separate sadhu pension portal, and applications are made free at sspy-up.gov.in.
What is UP Sadhu Pension Yojana?
UP Sadhu Pension Yojana is the name given to the Uttar Pradesh government's 2019 announcement that destitute sadhus and sants would be brought into the state's social security pension net. The announcement was made around the Prayagraj Kumbh in January 2019 and covered homeless and wandering sadhus alongside other destitute categories.
What exists today is simpler than the name suggests, and readers searching for "sadhu pension yojana" need this stated plainly: the Department of Social Welfare does not run a separate sadhu pension scheme, a separate sadhu pension portal or a separate sadhu application form. Eligible sadhus draw the state's regular Old Age Pension (Vridhavastha Pension) through the Integrated Pension Portal at sspy-up.gov.in, under the category shown there as राष्ट्रीय वृद्धावस्था पेंशन (National Old Age Pension).
That is not a downgrade. The old age pension rate stands at Rs 1,000 a month on the Social Welfare Department's own scheme page, against the Rs 500 a month figure that circulated when the sadhu pension was first announced. The department's portal dashboard for financial year 2025-26 shows about 67.5 lakh old age pensioners receiving payments each quarter, which is the machinery a sadhu applicant now uses.
If any page or agent offers a "sadhu pension registration" on a website other than sspy-up.gov.in, treat it as unofficial.
Who is eligible for pension as a sadhu in Uttar Pradesh?
A sadhu can apply if:
- He or she is a permanent resident of Uttar Pradesh, with the math, ashram or temple address serving as the place of residence.
- The applicant is 60 years of age or above.
- Annual income from all sources is up to Rs 46,080 in a rural area or Rs 56,460 in an urban area.
- The applicant holds a bank account in his or her own name that can be Aadhaar-seeded for DBT.
A sadhu cannot apply, or is not eligible, if:
- The applicant is under 60 years of age.
- The applicant is already benefiting from another pension scheme, which the eligibility page lists as a disqualification.
- Income exceeds the rural or urban ceiling.
- The applicant is not resident in Uttar Pradesh.
- No age proof can be produced to establish that 60 has been crossed.
There is no separate quota, no separate rate and no sect-based condition. A sadhu is assessed on exactly the same four tests: residence, age, income and no other pension: as any other applicant.
What documents are needed?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identity and bank seeding |
| Age proof | Yes | Must show 60 years or above |
| Income certificate | Yes | Within Rs 46,080 rural / Rs 56,460 urban |
| Residence proof | Yes | Math, ashram or temple address is used where there is no family home |
| Bank passbook | Yes | Own account, Aadhaar-seeded |
| Passport size photograph | Yes | Uploaded with the application |
The income certificate is the practical difficulty for a mendicant with no recorded earnings. It is issued by the tehsil on an e-District application, and the District Social Welfare Office is the right place to ask how to document a nil or negligible income.
How to apply for pension as a sadhu in Uttar Pradesh
- Open sspy-up.gov.in and select राष्ट्रीय वृद्धावस्था पेंशन (National Old Age Pension) from the menu. There is no sadhu-specific link, and this is the correct category to use.
- Click ऑनलाइन आवेदन करें (प्रथम बार) to start a first-time application.
- Enter personal details — name, date of birth, gender, category, district, tehsil, block or ward, and the address of the math, ashram or temple where you reside.
- Enter the Aadhaar number and bank account details, including IFSC code.
- Upload the photograph, income certificate, age proof, Aadhaar and bank passbook, then submit and save the registration number.
- If you cannot complete the online form, visit the District Social Welfare Office with the original documents and ask the desk assistant to enter the application. The scheme has no paper-only route, so an assisted entry is still filed on the same portal.
Verification is done by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate or the Block Development Officer, both of whom hold logins on the pension portal, and sanction is issued by the District Social Welfare Officer.
How and when is the pension paid?
The pension is Rs 1,000 per month, released quarterly as Rs 3,000 by Direct Benefit Transfer into the pensioner's Aadhaar-seeded account. There is no cash payment and no cheque. Quarterly releases are not tied to a fixed calendar date and can arrive weeks apart across districts, depending on when the district list is closed and funds are released.
The portal carries a standing notice asking pensioners to complete NPCI and Aadhaar seeding and to keep transacting in the account so it does not become inactive. For a sadhu who rarely uses a bank account, this is the most likely cause of a stopped pension, and it is worth making one small transaction a quarter to keep the account live.
Where to get help
- Social Welfare helpline: 14568.
- Directorate of Social Welfare: 0522-3538700, Prag Narayan Road, Butler Colony, Lucknow 226001.
- District Social Welfare Officer for a specific application or a stopped payment.
- UP Jansunwai at jansunwai.up.nic.in for a tracked written grievance.
Applying is free. No math, agent or intermediary is entitled to a fee or a share of the pension.
A note on what could not be verified
The 2019 announcement of a dedicated sadhu pension at Rs 500 a month was widely reported at the time, but no standing government order, scheme page or separate portal for a sadhu-specific pension is published on the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department's website today. Figures such as a separate sadhu beneficiary count or a dedicated sadhu budget line could not be confirmed on any official source and are therefore not stated here. Everything above about the current benefit, eligibility and application route is taken from the Old Age Pension Scheme, which is the live route for a sadhu applicant.
How to check your application status
Because a sadhu applies under the regular Old Age Pension category, status is tracked the same way any old age pensioner tracks it, on the Integrated Pension Portal rather than on any separate sadhu page.
- Go to sspy-up.gov.in and open the राष्ट्रीय वृद्धावस्था पेंशन (National Old Age Pension) section.
- Look for the आवेदन की स्थिति (application status) or पेंशन स्थिति link, and enter the registration number that was generated and saved at the time of submission.
- The result will show one of a few stages: application received at the district, verification pending with the Sub-Divisional Magistrate or Block Development Officer, sanctioned by the District Social Welfare Officer, or payment released for the quarter.
- If the registration number has been lost, the District Social Welfare Office for the district where the math, ashram or temple is located can look up the application by name and father's or guardian's name instead.
- For a sanctioned pension where a quarterly payment itself seems delayed rather than the application, the portal's payment or DBT status against the same registration number shows whether the amount has been sent to the bank, and a bank passbook update confirms whether it has been credited.
- If the online status has not moved for an unusually long time, or a payment shown as released has not reached the account, call the Social Welfare helpline 14568 or the Directorate of Social Welfare at 0522-3538700, or file a written complaint on UP Jansunwai (jansunwai.up.nic.in), which gives a tracked complaint number and a written reply.
A sadhu without a mobile phone or literacy to use the portal directly can ask the ashram, math or a family member to check status on their behalf using the same registration number, or can simply visit the District Social Welfare Office in person and ask for a status update.
Common reasons for rejection
Age proof does not clearly establish 60 years. A document that gives an approximate or estimated age, or one that does not match the date of birth entered in the form, is a frequent ground for rejection. The fix is to submit a document the tehsil or issuing authority will accept as firm proof of age, such as a voter ID, Aadhaar card with date of birth, or a school or birth record where one exists, rather than a self-declaration.
Income certificate is missing, expired, or shows income above the ceiling. The income limit is Rs 46,080 a year in a rural area and Rs 56,460 a year in an urban area, and an income certificate that is more than a year or two old, or one that was issued for a different purpose and does not state annual income clearly, gets the application returned. A sadhu with no recorded earnings should still get a nil or negligible income certificate issued through the tehsil's e-District process rather than leaving the income field unsupported.
Applicant is already receiving another pension. The eligibility rules disqualify anyone already drawing another central or state pension, including a widow pension, disability pension, or a pension from a different state. If an old pension was formally surrendered or has lapsed, that closure needs to be documented, otherwise the new application is rejected as a duplicate benefit claim.
Bank account is not in the applicant's own name or is not Aadhaar-seeded. A joint account, an account held by the math or institution rather than the individual sadhu, or an account where Aadhaar and NPCI mapping is incomplete will cause the Direct Benefit Transfer to fail even after sanction. Opening an individual savings account and completing Aadhaar seeding before applying avoids this.
Residence proof does not establish that the applicant lives in Uttar Pradesh. A wandering or recently arrived sadhu without a fixed address for long enough, or without any document linking them to the math, ashram or temple named in the application, can be turned down on the residence test. A letter from the head of the math or ashram confirming how long the applicant has resided there, along with any local address proof the institution holds, helps establish this.
Duplicate or inconsistent applications. Applying more than once, or applying with a name spelling, date of birth, or Aadhaar number that does not match across the different documents submitted, causes the verifying Sub-Divisional Magistrate or Block Development Officer to reject or hold the file for correction. Checking that name, date of birth, and Aadhaar details are identical across every document before submission avoids this delay.
Where an application is rejected, the District Social Welfare Office can usually state the specific reason on request, and a corrected application can be filed afresh once the underlying document is fixed.

Frequently asked questions
Is UP Sadhu Pension Yojana a separate scheme today?
No. There is no separate sadhu pension portal or separate application form on the Uttar Pradesh Social Welfare Department's systems. Eligible sadhus aged 60 and above apply under the National Old Age Pension category on sspy-up.gov.in like any other senior citizen.
How much pension does a sadhu get in Uttar Pradesh?
Rs 1,000 a month under the Old Age Pension Scheme. The Department of Social Welfare states that people of 60 years or above are given a pension of Rs 1,000 per month on a quarterly basis, which arrives as Rs 3,000 every three months.
What is the minimum age for a sadhu to get this pension?
60 years. The eligibility panel on the old age pension page of sspy-up.gov.in records a minimum age of 60 and a maximum of 150, so there is no upper age bar once 60 is crossed.
What is the income limit?
Annual income up to Rs 46,080 in rural areas and up to Rs 56,460 in urban areas, the same limits that apply to the general old age pension.
Can a sadhu who already gets another pension apply?
No. The eligibility page states that an applicant already benefiting from another pension scheme is not eligible, so a person drawing any other state or central pension cannot claim this one.
Where does a sadhu without a fixed address apply?
At the District Social Welfare Office of the district where the math, ashram or temple is located. The office can complete the online entry and guide the applicant on acceptable residence proof.
Is there a fee to apply for UP Sadhu Pension Yojana?
No. Applying is free, and no math, agent or intermediary is entitled to charge a fee or take a share of the pension for filing the application at sspy-up.gov.in or at the District Social Welfare Office.
Why would a sadhu's old age pension suddenly stop?
The most common cause is a bank account that has gone inactive because it is rarely used. The portal asks pensioners to complete NPCI and Aadhaar seeding and to keep making at least one small transaction a quarter, since an inactive account is the most likely reason a DBT pension payment stops for a sadhu who rarely uses a bank account.
When did UP Sadhu Pension Yojana start?
The scheme was announced in 2019, around the Prayagraj Kumbh in January 2019, to bring destitute and wandering sadhus and sants into the state's social security pension net.
