National Family Benefit Scheme (Rashtriya Parivarik Labh Yojana), Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh state government scheme
The National Family Benefit Scheme in Uttar Pradesh pays Rs 30,000 in one instalment to the dependants of a below-poverty-line family whose main earning member died between the ages of 18 and 60. Applications are made free online at nfbs.upsdc.gov.in within one year of the death.
What is the National Family Benefit Scheme in Uttar Pradesh?
The National Family Benefit Scheme, known in Uttar Pradesh as Rashtriya Parivarik Labh Yojana, is a one-time death-relief grant run by the Department of Social Welfare, Government of Uttar Pradesh. According to the department's own scheme page, the scheme provides Rs 30,000 in one go to the dependants of the bread winner of a BPL family where the deceased was aged between 18 and 60 years.
The scheme sits inside the National Social Assistance Programme framework but is administered entirely by the state. Uttar Pradesh moved it fully online from 1 January 2016, and every application since then is filed, verified, sanctioned and paid through the portal at nfbs.upsdc.gov.in. The Social Welfare Department recorded a budget provision of Rs 460 crore for 2020-21 against which 1,50,229 families were assisted, an indication of the scale at which the scheme actually operates.
The purpose is narrow and practical. When the person who earned the household's income dies suddenly, the family faces funeral costs, loss of daily earnings and often the withdrawal of children from school within weeks. Rashtriya Parivarik Labh Yojana is meant to put a fixed sum into the survivor's bank account fast enough to cover that first shock, not to replace long-term income. Families needing continuing support are separately routed to the Widow Pension or the Old Age Pension.
An important administrative safeguard exists for funding delays. Government Order number 1739/26-2-2006 dated 20 June 2006 delegated power to the District Magistrate to draw money from Treasury Reserve-27 at district level where the scheme's own funds have run out, so that an approved beneficiary can be paid immediately rather than waiting for the next release.
Who is eligible for Rashtriya Parivarik Labh Yojana?
You can claim the grant if all of the following are true:
- The deceased was the main earning member of the household.
- The deceased was aged 18 years or above and not more than 60 years on the date of death.
- The family is below the poverty line by the income standard the Social Welfare Department applies.
- The family are permanent residents of Uttar Pradesh, and the district entered in the form is the district of residence.
- The application is made within one year of the date of death.
- The claimant holds an active bank account that can receive a DBT credit.
Both natural death and accidental death are covered. There is no restriction by caste or religion, and the registration form accepts General, OBC, SC, ST and Minority categories alike. Male, female and transgender applicants can all register, as the online form's gender field shows.
You cannot apply, or will not be eligible, if:
- The deceased was under 18 or over 60 at the time of death.
- The deceased was not the primary earner of the family, for example a dependent elderly parent or a child.
- The family's income is above the poverty line figure certified by the tehsil.
- More than one year has passed since the death.
- The family is not resident in Uttar Pradesh.
- The same death has already been claimed by another member of the family. Only one grant of Rs 30,000 is admissible per death.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Death certificate of the earning member | Yes | The date on it decides whether the one-year window is still open |
| Aadhaar card of the applicant | Yes | Name, date of birth and gender must be entered exactly as on Aadhaar |
| Age proof of the deceased | Yes | To establish that the age at death was between 18 and 60 |
| Income certificate | Yes | Issued by the tehsil |
| Bank passbook of the applicant | Yes | Payment is by DBT into this account |
| Residence proof in Uttar Pradesh | Yes | Ration card, voter card or domicile certificate |
| Passport size photograph | Yes | Uploaded in the online form |
| Caste certificate | No | Only if a reserved category is being recorded |
Scan every document as a clear, readable image or PDF before you start. The portal times out the OTP step, and hunting for a document mid-form is the most common reason people abandon a half-completed application.
How to apply for the National Family Benefit Scheme online
- Open nfbs.upsdc.gov.in and choose नया पंजीकरण / New Registration. The form opens under the heading "Registration form for sanction of financial assistance" for the running financial year.
- Select your district from the list of all 75 districts of Uttar Pradesh, then choose urban (शहरी) or rural (ग्रामीण) as your area of residence.
- Enter the applicant's name, gender and date of birth exactly as on Aadhaar, followed by the father's or husband's name and the category (General, Minority, OBC, SC or ST).
- Enter the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar, type the captcha code and submit. An OTP is sent to that mobile number; enter it within the timer shown on screen.
- Note down the registration number displayed after the OTP is verified. The portal instructs applicants to log in again with the mobile number and registration number to complete the full application form.
- Log in and fill the detailed form: details of the deceased, date of death, family income, bank account number and IFSC code.
- Upload the scanned documents: death certificate, income certificate, Aadhaar, photograph and bank passbook, and submit the final application.
- Print the submitted form and keep it. The district office may ask for a signed hard copy with the original certificates during verification.
How to apply offline or with help
- Visit the District Social Welfare Office in your district headquarters with all original documents and photocopies. The Etah district page, for example, lists the office address and states that forms may be submitted either online or directly at the Samaj Kalyan office.
- Ask the office staff or the block-level dealing assistant to complete the online registration on your behalf. The scheme is fully computerised, so even an "offline" submission is entered into the same portal.
- Alternatively, use any Common Service Centre or Jan Seva Kendra to have the form filled and documents uploaded. Pay only the notified typing charge.
- Collect the acknowledgement with the registration number before you leave.
How is the application verified and paid?
After submission, the file moves through a fixed chain: the tehsil or block office checks the death certificate and income certificate, the case is placed before the District Social Welfare Officer, and sanction is issued at the district level. Uttar Pradesh has separate departmental logins on the NFBS portal for the Director of Social Welfare, the divisional Deputy Director, the District Social Welfare Officer and the desk assistant, and each of them acts on the same electronic file.
Once sanctioned, Rs 30,000 is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer into the applicant's bank account. No cheque is issued and no payment is made in cash at the office. If your account has been dormant or is not Aadhaar-seeded, the credit will fail and the case will be returned for bank-detail correction.
Why NFBS applications get rejected
- Age of the deceased outside 18-60. This is the single most common rejection and it cannot be cured; check the age proof before you apply.
- Application filed more than one year after the death.
- Income certificate above the BPL limit, or an income certificate that has expired.
- The deceased was not the primary earner in the household record.
- Name mismatch between the Aadhaar, the bank account and the death certificate.
- Wrong or inactive bank account, causing the DBT credit to bounce.
- Blurred or unreadable uploads, particularly of the death certificate.
Where the rejection is only for a document defect, log back into the portal with your registration number, correct the entry or re-upload the document, and take the corrected printout to the District Social Welfare Office.
Key dates and deadlines
The National Family Benefit Scheme has no seasonal window. Registration on nfbs.upsdc.gov.in stays open through the financial year, and the form itself is labelled with the current financial year. The only date that matters to a family is the date of death, because the application must be filed within one year of it. The department also issues periodic government orders on the portal, the most recent listed on the site is dated 31 December 2025 — which change procedure rather than the Rs 30,000 amount.
Where to complain if the money does not arrive
- Social Welfare Department helpline: 14568, the number displayed on every page of the NFBS portal.
- Toll free: 18004190001, listed on the NFBS contact page.
- WhatsApp: 6391114568 for written queries.
- Feedback form on nfbs.upsdc.gov.in for a written complaint against a pending file.
- District Social Welfare Officer, Department of Social Welfare, Kalyan Bhawan, Prag Narayan Road, Lucknow 226001 for escalation.
- UP Jansunwai at jansunwai.up.nic.in, the state's integrated grievance system, where a complaint is tagged to the district and tracked.
Applying is free from start to finish. Nobody in the chain; village pradhan, lekhpal, cyber cafe or agent: is authorised to take a commission out of the Rs 30,000.
How to check your NFBS application status
You do not need a separate tracking ID. The registration number generated right after your OTP is verified doubles as your tracking reference for the rest of the process.
- Go to nfbs.upsdc.gov.in and use the same login option you used to complete the application: your Aadhaar-linked mobile number together with the registration number you noted down at registration.
- Once logged in, the portal shows the current stage of your file rather than a single word like "approved" or "rejected". Look for whether the file is still with the tehsil or block office for verification of the death certificate and income certificate, whether it has reached the District Social Welfare Officer for sanction, or whether sanction has already been issued and payment released.
- If the login does not show any movement for several weeks after submission, that usually means the file is stuck at the verification stage, most often because a document could not be matched or a field does not tally with Aadhaar. Re-check the entries you made against your Aadhaar and bank passbook before assuming the case is delayed for funding reasons.
- If you cannot log in, or the portal does not accept your mobile number and registration number together, call the Social Welfare Department helpline at 14568 or the toll-free number 18004190001 and quote your registration number and district. You can also send the registration number over WhatsApp to 6391114568 and ask for the current stage.
- For a written status check, or if the helpline gives no clear answer, visit the District Social Welfare Office in person with the printed copy of your application and the registration number, and ask the desk assistant to pull up the file directly on the departmental login.
- If sanction has been recorded on the portal but the amount has not reached your account after a reasonable interval, the likely cause is a bank-detail mismatch or a dormant, non-Aadhaar-seeded account, not a pending sanction. In that case take your passbook to the District Social Welfare Office to have the bank details corrected and resubmitted for DBT.
- As a last resort, log a complaint on UP Jansunwai at jansunwai.up.nic.in, mentioning the registration number and district. A Jansunwai complaint is tracked centrally and is useful when a file appears stuck at the district level with no response from the local office.

Frequently asked questions
How much money does the National Family Benefit Scheme give in Uttar Pradesh?
Rs 30,000 is paid in a single instalment. The Department of Social Welfare states that the assistance is provided "in one go" to the dependants of the bread winner of a BPL family where the deceased was aged between 18 and 60.
Who can claim the Rs 30,000 under Rashtriya Parivarik Labh Yojana?
The surviving dependant who becomes the head of the household after the death claims it, most often the widow, but an adult son, daughter or parent may claim where there is no widow. The claimant must be a resident of Uttar Pradesh and the family must be below the poverty line.
Is there a time limit for applying after the death?
Yes. The application must be submitted within one year of the date of death. District pages of the Social Welfare Department state this explicitly, and applications filed after a year are normally rejected.
Can the family apply if the deceased was 62 years old?
No. The deceased earning member must have been at least 18 and not more than 60 years old at the time of death. Families of older deceased persons are not eligible under this scheme and should look at the Old Age Pension or Widow Pension route instead.
How do I check the status of my NFBS application?
Log in at nfbs.upsdc.gov.in with your registered mobile number and registration number. The same login is used to complete a half-filled form and to see where the file has reached, from the block or tehsil check to District Social Welfare Officer approval.
Is there any fee for applying?
No. Registration and application on nfbs.upsdc.gov.in are free. No agent, cyber cafe operator or official can charge you for "getting the file passed"; a cyber cafe may only charge for typing and scanning help.
What is the helpline for the National Family Benefit Scheme in UP?
Call 14568, the Social Welfare Department helpline, or the toll-free number 18004190001 listed on the NFBS contact page. Queries can also be sent on WhatsApp to 6391114568.
Does the money come as a cheque or into the bank account?
The Rs 30,000 is transferred directly into the applicant's bank account through DBT. There is no cheque and no cash payment at the office, which is why an active, Aadhaar-seeded account is a mandatory requirement.
