What is Krishi Yantrikarana Yojane in Karnataka?

Krishi Yantrikarana Yojane, literally the agricultural mechanisation scheme; is run by the Department of Agriculture, Government of Karnataka, through the Raitamitra portal and the state's network of Raitha Samparka Kendras. The scheme gives an individual farmer a large share of the cost of buying his own farm implement.

Karnataka funds mechanisation from two directions at once. Part of the money is the state's own, and part comes through the central Sub-Mission on Agricultural Mechanisation (SMAM), which is why the scheme is often described as a state-cum-central programme. The department publishes guidelines, government orders and circulars for farm mechanisation and agro-processing on the Raitamitra site.

The reason mechanisation gets this much attention is labour. Farm labour availability in Karnataka has fallen sharply, wages have risen, and timely operations, sowing within the window after the first rains, harvesting before unseasonal rain — decide the yield. A power tiller or a seed drill in the farmer's own shed removes the wait for a hired team.

What the scheme covers

  • Power tillers and small self-propelled machines
  • Rotavators, cultivators, ploughs and other tillage implements
  • Seed drills, seed-cum-fertiliser drills and planters
  • Sprayers, dusters and plant protection equipment
  • Threshers, chaff cutters, winnowers and post-harvest implements
  • Other implements on the department's approved list for the year

Who is eligible for the farm implement subsidy?

You can apply if:

  • You are a farmer in Karnataka with land recorded in your name in the RTC, or held under a registered lease.
  • You hold a FRUITS ID, Karnataka's single farmer registration number.
  • Your bank account is in your own name and Aadhaar-seeded for DBT.
  • The implement you want is on the department's approved list and within the notified cost ceiling.
  • Your taluk still has unspent physical target for that implement this year.

You cannot apply if:

  • The machine you want costs more than Rs 2 lakh. Karnataka decided not to give subsidy for agricultural equipment above that price under this route, so such buyers are not eligible here and are directed to the Krishi Yantra Dhare custom hiring network instead.
  • You farm on an informal or oral tenancy with no registered lease and no RTC in your name.
  • You have already received subsidy for the same implement type within the period the department fixes between repeat claims.
  • You bought the machine before the sanction was issued.
  • The implement or the make and model is not on the approved list.

Priority within the eligible pool goes to small and marginal farmers, and Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe farmers are covered from the Special Component Sub-Plan and Tribal Sub-Plan allocations at the higher rate.

How much subsidy is given?

Category Subsidy rate
SC and ST farmers 90 per cent of the notified unit cost
General category farmers 50 per cent of the notified unit cost

Two limits apply on top of the percentage:

  • The percentage is applied to the notified unit cost for that implement, not to the dealer's asking price. Where the dealer quotes above the notified cost, the farmer bears the whole excess.
  • The Rs 2 lakh machine price ceiling decided by the state government keeps tractors and combine harvesters out of this individual-subsidy route.

The practical arithmetic matters. On a rotavator with a notified unit cost of, say, Rs 1 lakh, a general category farmer contributes about Rs 50,000 and an SC or ST farmer about Rs 10,000 to assuming the dealer's price does not exceed the norm. Ask the Raitha Samparka Kendra for the current implement-wise unit cost list before negotiating with a dealer, because that single sheet decides your out-of-pocket cost.

What documents are required?

How to apply for the Karnataka farm mechanisation subsidy

  1. Register for a FRUITS ID at fruits.karnataka.gov.in using Citizen Login, or free of cost at your Raitha Samparka Kendra. Without an FID the application cannot be entered into the department's system.
  2. Visit the Raitha Samparka Kendra serving your hobli and ask for the current year's approved implement list, the notified unit costs, and how much target is left for the implement you want.
  3. Get a quotation from an approved dealer for a listed make and model at or below the notified unit cost.
  4. Submit the application with the FRUITS ID, RTC, Aadhaar copy, bank passbook copy, caste certificate where applicable and the quotation, either at the Raitha Samparka Kendra or at the taluk office of the Assistant Director of Agriculture. Take a dated acknowledgement.
  5. Wait for the sanction or permit letter. Do not buy the machine before it issues.
  6. Buy the implement from the approved dealer and get an original invoice showing the serial or chassis number.
  7. Present the machine and the invoice for physical verification by the agriculture officer, who records the serial number against your application.
  8. Receive the subsidy by DBT into your Aadhaar-seeded account, or take delivery at the subsidised price where your district runs the permit-based dealer supply model.

How do I check my application status?

Quote the acknowledgement number and your FRUITS ID at the Raitha Samparka Kendra or at the taluk Assistant Director of Agriculture's office. The DBT credit itself triggers an SMS to the mobile number recorded in your FRUITS profile; if that number is stale, update it free at the Raitha Samparka Kendra, otherwise no alert will reach you and you will not know the money has moved.

Krishi Yantrikarana or Krishi Yantra Dhare, which do you need?

Karnataka runs two distinct mechanisation programmes and farmers frequently confuse them.

  • Krishi Yantrikarana Yojane subsidises the purchase of an implement that the farmer then owns. It suits implements you use repeatedly through the season on your own holding. A rotavator, a sprayer, a seed drill.
  • Krishi Yantra Dhare is the state's custom hiring centre network, where hubs rent out tractors, harvesters, transplanters and other high-value machines by the hour or the acre. It suits machines you need for a few days a year and could never justify buying, especially those above the Rs 2 lakh ceiling.

A farmer can use both: buy a subsidised power tiller for routine work, and hire a combine harvester from the nearest Yantra Dhare hub at harvest.

Why applications and claims get rejected

  • Machine bought before sanction. The commonest single reason.
  • Implement or model not on the approved list.
  • Machine priced above Rs 2 lakh, which falls outside the scheme.
  • Invoice without a serial or chassis number, so the machine cannot be matched at verification.
  • Taluk target exhausted, particularly for popular implements late in the financial year.
  • Caste certificate not produced where the 90 per cent rate has been claimed, in which case the claim is reworked at 50 per cent or held.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, which stops the DBT credit.
  • RTC not in the applicant's name, usually because a mutation is pending at the taluk office.

Where do I complain?

Take a delayed sanction or unpaid subsidy first to the Raitha Samparka Kendra, then in writing to the Assistant Director of Agriculture of your taluk, then to the Joint Director of Agriculture of your district. The Raitamitra portal publishes district office contact details for the Department of Agriculture, and Karnataka's Sakala framework provides an escalation route where a notified service timeline has been missed.

No agent should be paid to obtain this subsidy. FRUITS registration, the application form, the sanction and the field verification are all free of charge, and any dealer who claims he can "arrange" the subsidy for a commission should be reported to the Assistant Director of Agriculture.

Frequently asked questions

How much subsidy does Karnataka give on farm implements?

Karnataka distributes farm machinery under the farm mechanisation scheme at 50 per cent subsidy for general category farmers and 90 per cent subsidy for SC and ST category farmers, subject to the notified unit cost ceiling for each implement.

Is there an upper limit on the machine's price?

Yes. The state government decided not to provide subsidy for agricultural equipment costing more than Rs 2 lakh under this route, so high-value machinery is served through the Krishi Yantra Dhare custom hiring centres instead of individual purchase subsidy.

Which implements are covered?

Individual farm implements such as power tillers, rotavators, seed drills and seeders, ploughs, sprayers, threshers, chaff cutters and similar equipment are covered, drawn from the approved implement list the department notifies each year.

How is this different from Krishi Yantra Dhare?

Krishi Yantrikarana gives an individual farmer a subsidy to buy his own implement, which he then owns. Krishi Yantra Dhare is Karnataka's custom hiring centre network, where a farmer rents a tractor or harvester by the hour from a hub without owning it. A farmer may use both.

Where do I apply?

Apply at your Raitha Samparka Kendra or the taluk office of the Assistant Director of Agriculture, with your FRUITS ID, RTC, Aadhaar, bank passbook and caste certificate where applicable. Applications are also entered through the Raitamitra system.

Do I buy the machine first or wait for approval?

Wait for the sanction or permission letter. Buying before approval is the most common cause of a rejected claim, because the department must record the case before the purchase and verify the machine afterwards.

Is the subsidy paid to me or to the dealer?

Karnataka pays farm subsidies by Direct Benefit Transfer into the farmer's Aadhaar-seeded bank account after the purchase is verified, though some districts operate a permit-based supply model through approved dealers. Confirm which model your taluk is using before you pay.

Can a tenant farmer apply?

Only with a registered lease. The RTC or a registered lease deed is required, and an informal oral tenancy will not support an application.
