Aahar Anudan Yojana (Food Grant Scheme for Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups), Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Aahar Anudan Yojana is a Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Department scheme started on 23 December 2017 that pays a monthly food grant of about Rs 1,000 into the bank account of women of Baiga, Bharia and Sahariya particularly vulnerable tribal families, to reduce malnutrition. No separate application is needed: beneficiaries are identified by the department.
What is the Aahar Anudan Yojana?
Aahar Anudan Yojana, the food grant scheme, is a state-sponsored scheme of the Tribal Affairs Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh. According to the Madhya Pradesh government's official scheme entitlement record published through the CM Helpline portal, the scheme was started on 23 December 2017, and its stated objective is to free particularly vulnerable tribal group families from malnutrition ("विशेष पिछड़ी जनजाति परिवार को कुपोषण से मुक्ति").
The design is unusually simple for a welfare scheme. Instead of distributing food or running a kitchen, Madhya Pradesh pays cash directly into the bank account of a woman of the household, so the family can buy nutritious food itself. The state entitlement record confirms the mechanism: "राशि हितग्राही के खाते में जमा कराई जाती है". The amount is deposited into the beneficiary's account.
The scheme is limited to three particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) of Madhya Pradesh: Baiga, Bharia and Sahariya. These are the communities with the state's worst nutrition and income indicators, and the scheme exists precisely because the general tribal welfare programmes were not reaching them adequately.
The scheme is often written locally as Aahar Anudan Yojana or आहार अनुदान योजना, and sometimes described as the "Rs 1,000 per month scheme for Baiga, Bharia and Sahariya women".
How much does the Aahar Anudan grant pay?
Here the sources have to be read carefully.
- The Madhya Pradesh entitlement record classifies the benefit only as an "अनुदान" (grant) and does not publish a monthly rate. Its "amount" field says simply "अनुदान".
- The Government of India's myScheme portal, which carries the scheme as
aaymp, describes it as monthly assistance of Rs 1,000 to students, girls and women of the Baiga, Bharia and Sahariya tribes.
Because the department has not published a rate on its own site, treat Rs 1,000 a month as the figure of record and confirm the current amount with your district Tribal Affairs office before relying on it. News reporting in recent years has referred to a higher figure for this grant; that has not been published on a Madhya Pradesh government portal, so this guide does not state it as fact. Ask the district office or the Janpad Panchayat CEO for the rate currently being credited in your block.
Payment is made directly into the beneficiary's bank account, so the account must be active and Aadhaar-seeded. There is no ration-shop component, no coupon and no cash handout.
Who is eligible for Aahar Anudan Yojana?
The Madhya Pradesh entitlement record states the eligibility conditions in a single line, and every part of it matters.
A family is eligible if:
- A member of the household belongs to the Baiga, Bharia or Sahariya tribe.
- The beneficiary is a native resident (मूल निवासी) of Madhya Pradesh.
- The household is not in government service.
- The household is not an income-tax payer.
- The beneficiary category recorded is Scheduled Tribe, and the scheme covers both urban and rural areas of the state.
A family is not eligible if:
- It belongs to a Scheduled Tribe other than Baiga, Bharia or Sahariya. This is the single most common misunderstanding, the scheme is not a general tribal benefit, and members of other tribes cannot apply for it.
- Any member is in government service.
- The household pays income tax.
- The beneficiary is not a native resident of Madhya Pradesh.
The exclusions are deliberately narrow. Unlike most Indian welfare schemes, there is no land ceiling, no BPL card requirement and no separate income certificate condition published in the entitlement record, only the government-service and income-tax bars.
How to apply for Aahar Anudan Yojana
This is the point where most readers go wrong, so read the department's own position first: the Madhya Pradesh entitlement record states that because the scheme is meant for a particularly vulnerable tribal group and not for all tribal people, no separate application is required ("पृथक से आवेदन की आवश्यकता नहीं"). The record also lists the application process itself as "निरंक" (nil) and the application fee as nil.
What that means in practice is that the department identifies beneficiaries from its own PVTG records rather than inviting forms. Your job is to make sure your household appears in those records correctly:
- Confirm that your household is listed as a Baiga, Bharia or Sahariya family in the Tribal Affairs Department's records for your village, by asking at the Janpad Panchayat office of your block.
- Confirm that your Samagra family and member records are complete and correct, since Madhya Pradesh routes Direct Benefit Transfer payments through Samagra. Get any spelling, date-of-birth or gender error corrected first.
- Ensure the woman named as beneficiary has an active bank account seeded with Aadhaar, so the monthly credit does not fail.
- If your family is genuinely Baiga, Bharia or Sahariya but is not receiving the grant, take your Scheduled Tribe certificate, Samagra ID, Aadhaar and bank passbook to the district officer of the Tribal Affairs Department or the Chief Executive Officer of the Janpad Panchayat, who are the two officers the state record designates for this scheme.
There is no deadline to worry about. The entitlement record gives the time limit as "निर्धारित नहीं" — not fixed; precisely because there is no application window.
How to check whether the grant is being credited
- Check your bank passbook or bank SMS alerts for the monthly credit, since payment is by direct account transfer.
- Check your Samagra record at samagra.gov.in for your member and family ID status, because a broken Samagra or Aadhaar seeding is the usual reason a Direct Benefit Transfer payment fails.
- Ask at the Janpad Panchayat for the block-level beneficiary list, which is maintained by the CEO's office.
- Escalate to the district Tribal Affairs office if your name is missing from the list despite valid tribe and residence proof.
Why payments stop, and what to do
- Bank account dormant or closed. A DBT credit into a dormant account bounces. Reactivate the account and inform the Janpad Panchayat.
- Aadhaar not seeded with the bank account, so the transfer cannot be routed.
- Samagra record error. A name, gender or date-of-birth mismatch between Samagra, Aadhaar and the bank record.
- Household removed from the list after verification found government service or income-tax payment in the family.
- Tribe recorded wrongly in the Scheduled Tribe certificate, for example a Baiga family recorded under a general Scheduled Tribe head.
For each of these, the fix runs through the same two offices: the Janpad Panchayat CEO for block-level records and the district Tribal Affairs officer for scheme-level correction.

How much does Aahar Anudan Yojana pay per month?
