Admission in Post Matric Hostel Scheme (Backward Classes and Minorities)
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Admission in Post Matric Hostel Scheme gives free hostel accommodation to backward class and minority students of Madhya Pradesh who study after Class 10 in a town away from home. The Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department runs the hostels, and students apply on the prescribed form at the district Assistant Director's office, there is no hostel fee.
What is the Admission in Post Matric Hostel Scheme?
Admission in Post Matric Hostel Scheme is a welfare scheme of the Department of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare (Pichhda Varg tatha Alpsankhyak Kalyan Vibhag), Government of Madhya Pradesh. The scheme gives free hostel accommodation to backward class and minority students who have passed Class 10 and are studying in an institution located away from their home town.
The problem the scheme solves is the one that quietly ends most rural students' education after Class 10. A student from a village in Dhar, Khargone or Jhabua may qualify comfortably for a polytechnic, an ITI or a degree college, but the college is in the district headquarters, and a rented room plus food there costs more than the family's monthly income. The post-matric scholarship helps with fees and maintenance, but it does not by itself put a roof over the student's head. A departmental hostel does.
According to the department's description of the scheme, the benefit is complimentary lodging for backward class students who are eligible for the Post Matric Scholarship and are studying in educational institutions near the hostel, and who are not residents of the hostel's local area.
Key features
- The benefit is in kind, a hostel seat, not a cash payment.
- No hostel rent is charged to the student.
- Admission is tied to eligibility for the post-matric scholarship, so the income and caste conditions of that scheme carry across.
- The route is offline, through the district office, on a prescribed form.
- Hostels are run at district and block headquarters across Madhya Pradesh where the department has buildings.
Who is eligible for the post matric hostel?
You can apply if:
- You belong to a backward class notified for Madhya Pradesh, or to a notified minority community, with a valid certificate.
- You are a permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- You have passed Class 10 and are studying in a post-matric course, Class 11 or 12, ITI, polytechnic, a degree course or a professional course.
- You are eligible for the Post Matric Scholarship of the department. For the OBC post-matric scholarship the department's district pages record a family income limit of up to Rs 3 lakh a year; for the minority post-matric scholarship the recorded limit is up to Rs 2 lakh a year with a requirement of 50 per cent or more marks.
- Your institution is near the hostel you are applying to.
- You are not a resident of the town or local area where the hostel is located.
You cannot apply, or you are not eligible — if:
- You live in the same town as the hostel. This is the defining exclusion. The scheme is for outstation students.
- You belong to the Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe. The Tribal Affairs Department runs ashram schools and junior, senior and college hostels for ST students, and the SC Welfare wing runs its own hostels; you should apply there instead.
- Your family income exceeds the limit that applies to your post-matric scholarship category.
- You are still in Class 10 or below. This is a post-matric scheme, and pre-matric students of minority communities are covered by the separate pre-matric scholarship instead.
- You are not enrolled in a recognised institution, or you cannot produce a bonafide certificate for the current session.
- You have been expelled from a departmental hostel previously for indiscipline.

How to apply for admission in a post matric hostel
- Take admission in your course first. The hostel application needs the admission slip or bonafide certificate from the institution near the hostel, so the college or school comes before the hostel.
- Visit the office of the Collector, or the Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, in your district, and ask for the prescribed hard-copy application form for post matric hostel admission.
- Fill the form completely, student details, course and institution, home address with distance, family income, and the hostel you are applying to.
- Attach self-attested photocopies of the caste or minority certificate, domicile certificate, income certificate, previous marksheet, admission proof, Aadhaar, Samagra ID and photographs.
- Submit the form before the district's cut-off for the session, and ask for a dated receipt showing the submission and any reference number given.
- Follow up on the allotment list. Where applications exceed seats, districts allot on merit and need, so ask for your position if you are not allotted at first pass.
- Report to the hostel with the allotment letter and complete the hostel register formalities, including the guardian's consent and local guardian details.
Keep the acknowledgement receipt. It is the only proof you filed, and it is what the department will ask for if the file goes missing.
What the hostel provides
The core benefit is free accommodation for the duration of the course, which removes the single largest cost of studying away from home. Departmental hostels in Madhya Pradesh typically provide a bed and a place to study, along with basic facilities maintained by the department. Whether mess and bedding are included varies between hostels and between the wings that run them, so ask the hostel superintendent for the specific facility list for the hostel you are allotted rather than assuming a statewide standard.
Hostel admission does not reduce the post-matric scholarship. The two are separate benefits of the same department and are meant to work together, the scholarship for fees and maintenance, the hostel for lodging.
How to check your application status
- Ask the Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, at the district office, quoting the receipt number from your submission.
- Check the allotment list displayed at the district office and at the hostel.
- Ask for the waiting list position in writing if you were not allotted, so that you can follow up when a seat falls vacant.
Common reasons an application is rejected
- Student is a local resident of the hostel's town. Districts check the domicile address against the hostel location.
- Income certificate above the scholarship limit for your category.
- Caste or minority certificate missing or expired. Get it issued at the Lok Seva Kendra well before the admission season.
- No proof of admission in an institution near the hostel.
- Application filed after the district's cut-off, once seats have been allotted for the session.
- Seats exhausted. This is not a defect in your application; ask to be placed on the waiting list.
- Applying to the wrong department. SC and ST students filing here are redirected, losing weeks. Check your category before you file.
Key dates
The hostel admission window follows the college and school admission season, which in Madhya Pradesh runs from the declaration of Class 10 and Class 12 results through the college counselling rounds. No single statewide last date is published for hostel admission, so the operative date is the one your district office announces. Apply as soon as your own course admission is confirmed; allotment is effectively first come, first considered once merit is equal, and a hostel that is full in July will not open a seat in September.
Where to complain
- Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, at your district headquarters. The first authority for allotment and rejection issues.
- District Collector's public grievance hearing (Jan Sunwai), held weekly at the collectorate.
- Department of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Bhopal, through bcwelfare.mp.gov.in.
- CM Helpline 181, the Madhya Pradesh government's general grievance line.
No separate scheme helpline is published, so treat any phone number offered by a third-party website as unverified. The application form, the seat and the verification are all free of charge.

Frequently asked questions
Who can get a seat under the Admission in Post Matric Hostel Scheme?
Backward class and minority students of Madhya Pradesh who have passed Class 10, are eligible for the post-matric scholarship, and are studying in an institution near the hostel but away from their own home town can get a seat. The Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department allots the places.
Is the hostel free?
Yes. The scheme provides free accommodation, which is the whole point of it — it removes the lodging cost that otherwise stops a student from taking admission in a town away from home.
How do I apply?
Obtain the prescribed hard-copy application form from the office of the Collector or the Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, in your district, fill it, attach self-attested copies of your documents and submit it. There is no online self-application for the hostel seat.
Can a student who lives in the same town apply?
No. Students who are residents of the town where the hostel is located are not eligible, because the scheme exists specifically for students who have no place to stay near their institution.
Can a Scheduled Caste or Scheduled Tribe student apply here?
No, not to this department's hostels. Scheduled Tribe students apply to the Tribal Affairs Department's ashram schools and junior, senior and college hostels, and Scheduled Caste students to the SC Welfare wing's hostels.
Does a hostel seat replace the post-matric scholarship?
No. Hostel admission and the post-matric scholarship are separate benefits of the same department, and the hostel scheme is aimed at students who already qualify for the scholarship.
What happens if all the seats are taken?
Where applications exceed seats, districts allot on merit in the last examination, giving weight to distance from home and family income. Ask the Assistant Director for the waiting list position in writing.
Is there a fee to apply?
No fee is charged for the application form or for the hostel seat. Report any demand for money to the district Assistant Director or on CM Helpline 181.
