Caste Certificate in Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Caste Certificate in Madhya Pradesh is issued by the Tehsildar or SDM of the tehsil and applied for on the MP e-District portal at mpedistrict.gov.in, where citizens log in with their Aadhaar number and an OTP sent to the Aadhaar-linked mobile. Fees are paid online by net banking, debit or credit card or e-wallet, and Lok Seva Kendras at every tehsil office file the same application offline.
What is a caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh?
A caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh is the Revenue Department's written proof that a named person belongs to a caste notified for Madhya Pradesh as Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe or Other Backward Class. District Vidisha describes it plainly as "a documentary proof which certifies that an individual belongs to a particular caste", and notes it is needed in Madhya Pradesh for government jobs, university admissions and scholarship eligibility.
Madhya Pradesh has one of India's largest Scheduled Tribe populations, and the certificate carries unusual weight in the state: it governs reserved seats in MP's universities, engineering and medical colleges, reserved posts in MPPSC and MP ESB recruitment, post-matric and pre-matric scholarships from the Tribal Affairs and SC Welfare Departments, hostel admission, and the state's tribal sub-plan benefits.
The application runs through the MP e-District portal at mpedistrict.gov.in and through Lok Seva Kendras, the citizen service counters that Madhya Pradesh operates at tehsil offices and collectorates under its Public Services Guarantee framework. District Khargone confirms that caste certificate applications are accepted at Lok Seva Kendras located at all tehsil offices in the district; District Bhopal lists its own at the Collectorate, A Block, Old Secretariat, with further counters at Gas Rahat Bhawan, the Kolar Nagar Palika Bhawan at Gehunkheda and the Tehsil premises in Berasia.
Who can and who cannot apply?
You can apply if you reside in Madhya Pradesh and your paternal family belongs to a caste, tribe or backward class notified for Madhya Pradesh. Descent is traced through the father, so the tehsil enquiry rests on the oldest surviving paternal record, the father's or grandfather's caste certificate, an old school register entry, or a revenue record carrying the caste.
You cannot apply in Madhya Pradesh if the family's caste record belongs to another state. A family recorded as Scheduled Tribe in Chhattisgarh or Maharashtra and now settled in Bhopal or Indore is not eligible for an MP caste certificate on that record; the certificate must be obtained from the state where the family is recorded, and it does not carry Madhya Pradesh's reservation. You are also not eligible if the caste claimed is on no Madhya Pradesh notification, or if nothing on record connects your family to it.
Boundaries matter in Madhya Pradesh more than in most states, because several tribes are notified only for particular districts or areas within the state. Check that the tribe you claim is notified for the district you live in before filing, since an area-restricted notification is a frequent ground for refusal.
What documents are required?
Assemble these before you log in:
- Aadhaar card with a live Aadhaar-linked mobile number, MP e-District logs you in through Aadhaar and an OTP to that number, so an outdated linked mobile stops the application at step one.
- Samagra ID for the family and the member, which Madhya Pradesh links across its citizen services.
- Caste record of the father or a paternal relative. A caste certificate, an old school record or a revenue record.
- Residence proof for the Madhya Pradesh address: ration card, voter ID or a utility bill.
- School records of the applicant: transfer certificate or marksheet.
- Self-declaration or affidavit of the caste claimed.
- Passport-size photograph, and a marriage certificate where a married woman applies against her father's record.
How to apply for a caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh online
- Open the MP e-District portal at mpedistrict.gov.in and choose the citizen e-KYC services option.
- Log in with your Aadhaar number. District administrations across Madhya Pradesh describe the same route — the citizen logs in on MP e-District using the Aadhaar number, receives an OTP by SMS on the Aadhaar-linked mobile, and after OTP verification can avail the service from home.
- Select the caste certificate service and pick the correct category, SC, ST or OBC. Bhopal lists the SC-ST caste certificate as its own service, and Sidhi district separately lists issuance of the caste certificate for OBC.
- Fill the application form with the applicant's name as on Aadhaar, the father's and grandfather's names, the caste claimed, the Samagra ID, and the village, tehsil and district.
- Upload the documents, paternal caste record, residence proof, school records, declaration and photograph.
- Pay the fee online. The districts confirm that after availing the service on the portal the citizen can pay the required fee by internet banking, debit or credit card, or e-wallet.
- Save the registration number on the acknowledgement. It is what the status page needs and what the Lok Seva Kendra will ask for.
How to apply offline at a Lok Seva Kendra
- Visit the Lok Seva Kendra at your tehsil office, or the collectorate counter in the district headquarters.
- Carry Aadhaar, the Samagra ID, the paternal caste record, residence proof, school records, the declaration and photographs, with photocopies of each.
- Ask the operator to file the caste certificate application on MP e-District in your name. The counter feeds the same online system, so the file is tracked the same way.
- Pay the government charge and the notified operator charge, and collect the receipt carrying the registration number.
- Collect the signed certificate from the same Lok Seva Kendra, or download it from the portal once it is issued.
How do you check the application status?
Open the MP e-District portal, enter the registration number from your acknowledgement, and submit to see the status online. The file moves through submission, patwari and revenue-inspector verification of the residence and caste record, tehsil scrutiny, and approval by the Tehsildar or SDM. If it stalls at the verification stage, the tehsil office and the Lok Seva Kendra that filed it are the two places that can move it; carry the registration number to either.
Why are MP caste certificate applications rejected?
- The Aadhaar-linked mobile number is inactive, so the OTP login or the e-KYC never completes.
- No paternal caste record supports the claim, and the declaration alone does not satisfy the enquiring officer.
- The tribe claimed is notified only for other districts of Madhya Pradesh, not for the applicant's district.
- The caste record belongs to another state.
- Names or caste spellings differ between Aadhaar, the Samagra record, the school certificate and the relative's caste certificate.
- The patwari's field enquiry could not verify the family at the address given.
- Uploaded scans are unreadable or the wrong document was attached to a slot.
What does it cost, and what about agents?
A Madhya Pradesh caste certificate is issued at the government fee that MP e-District displays and collects online, plus the notified operator charge if a Lok Seva Kendra files it for you. No patwari, tehsil clerk or agent is entitled to a cash payment beyond that, and no middleman can shorten the field enquiry the Tehsildar depends on. Agents who quote several thousand rupees for a "guaranteed" certificate are charging for an Aadhaar-OTP login and a form that takes minutes to complete. Keep the online payment receipt and the registration number, and take any demand for extra money to the tehsildar, the collector's grievance cell, or the Lok Seva Kendra's supervisory officer.
Validity and later use
The caste entry on a Madhya Pradesh certificate records descent, so it does not expire. The documents that sit alongside it do: OBC candidates are asked for a current non-creamy-layer or income certificate, and scholarship portals often want an income certificate for the current financial year. Download and keep the digitally signed PDF from MP e-District, MP's own scholarship and admission portals accept it directly, which spares you a fresh tehsil visit every admission season.

Frequently asked questions
Who issues a caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh?
The Tehsildar or Sub-Divisional Magistrate of the tehsil issues the caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh, working through the Revenue Department. The application reaches that officer through the MP e-District portal or a Lok Seva Kendra counter.
How do I apply for an MP caste certificate online?
Log in on the MP e-District portal at mpedistrict.gov.in using your Aadhaar number, verify the OTP sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile, then open the caste certificate service and file the application from home. District administrations across Madhya Pradesh describe exactly this Aadhaar e-KYC login route.
How do I pay the fee for an MP caste certificate?
Pay online on MP e-District by internet banking, debit or credit card, or e-wallet, which the district administrations list as the accepted payment methods after you avail the service. At a Lok Seva Kendra the counter collects the same government charge along with the notified operator charge.
Where is the Lok Seva Kendra for a caste certificate in Madhya Pradesh?
Lok Seva Kendras operate at tehsil offices across the state — District Khargone confirms that caste certificate applications can be submitted at the Lok Seva Kendras located at all tehsil offices in the district, and Bhopal runs one at the Collectorate, A Block, Old Secretariat.
Can I check my MP caste certificate application status online?
Yes, open the MP e-District portal, enter the registration number printed on your acknowledgement and submit to see the current status of the file. Keep that number safe, because it is the only handle on the application.
What if my caste is recorded in another state?
Madhya Pradesh issues caste certificates only against castes notified for Madhya Pradesh, so a family whose caste record belongs to another state must obtain the certificate from that state. Moving into Madhya Pradesh does not transfer the reservation entitlement.
Does an MP caste certificate need to be renewed?
A caste certificate records descent and the caste entry does not change, so the certificate does not expire in the way an income certificate does. OBC candidates in Madhya Pradesh are separately asked for a current non-creamy-layer or income certificate, and that one does have to be refreshed.
