Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (Madhya Pradesh)
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme in Madhya Pradesh pays Rs 600 a month to below-poverty-line widows aged 40 to 79 years. Running in the state since 1 April 2009 under the National Social Assistance Programme, the pension is credited by DBT and applications must be decided in 15 working days. Apply free at the gram panchayat or on socialsecurity.mp.gov.in.
What is the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme in Madhya Pradesh?
Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme is the widow pension component of the central National Social Assistance Programme, implemented in Madhya Pradesh by the Social Justice and Divyangjan Welfare Department. According to the state's social security pension portal, the scheme commenced in Madhya Pradesh on 1 April 2009 and targets "eligible widowed women in the age group of 40 to 79 years living below the poverty line."
The scheme is a floor, not a full income. A widow in a below-poverty-line household typically loses the household's main earning on her husband's death, and often has no claim on a pension of her own. The Indira Gandhi widow pension puts a small, guaranteed and predictable amount into her own bank account every month, in her own name, without depending on anyone else in the household.
Core facts
- Rs 600 per month in Madhya Pradesh, as stated on the state portal.
- Age band 40 to 79 years.
- Below-poverty-line household, by Government of India norms.
- Paid by Direct Benefit Transfer to the widow's own account.
- Decision deadline 15 working days under the Public Service Guarantee Act,
Madhya Pradesh runs this scheme on the same socialsecurity.mp.gov.in platform as its own state pensions, so a single Samagra member ID governs the application, the record and the status check.
Who is eligible for the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension in MP?
You can be considered if:
- You are a widow. The death certificate of your husband is the governing proof.
- You are aged 40 to 79 years.
- Your household is in the below-poverty-line category as defined by Government of India norms, and you hold a BPL card.
- You are a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- You are registered on the Samagra portal with a 9-digit member ID.
You are not eligible and cannot apply if:
- You are under 40 years of age. Apply instead under the Mukhyamantri Samajik Suraksha Kalyani Pension Yojana, which starts at 18.
- You are 80 years or above, which is outside this scheme's band. Take the case to the local body, which handles the state's old-age pension arrangements.
- Your household is above the poverty line and you hold no BPL card.
- You have remarried, which ends widow status and with it the entitlement.
- You are not a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- You have no Samagra registration, which must be completed before the application can be processed.
The three conditions doing the real work here are widowhood, the 40 to 79 band, and the BPL card. Almost every rejection under this scheme traces back to one of those three rather than to a paperwork slip.
How much pension is paid and how?
The Madhya Pradesh social security pension portal states the amount as Rs 600 per month, which is Rs 7,200 a year. The rate is flat across the state, with no rural and urban distinction and no age-based slab within the 40 to 79 band.
Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the widow's own bank account. For the credit to succeed the account must be in her own name, live rather than dormant, and seeded with Aadhaar. Where a widow has been operating a joint account held in her late husband's name, that account is the wrong destination and usually the reason a sanctioned pension never arrives. Open a fresh single-name account and get the bank details updated at the local body.
Once sanctioned, the pension continues month after month without a fresh application. Periodic verification by the local body confirms the beneficiary is alive, has not remarried and still meets the conditions.

How to apply for the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension in Madhya Pradesh
Offline
- Collect the free prescribed application form from the gram panchayat or janpad panchayat if you live in a rural area, or from the nagar nigam, nagar palika or nagar panchayat if you live in a town.
- Fill the form and attach the husband's death certificate, BPL card, age proof, three photographs, Samagra ID and a copy of your bank passbook.
- Submit the application at that office and take a dated acknowledgement listing what you have handed in.
- Follow up after 15 working days, the decision period fixed under the Public Service Guarantee Act, 2010.
Online
- Confirm your Samagra registration at samagra.gov.in and note your 9-digit member ID.
- Open socialsecurity.mp.gov.in, choose the pension application option and enter the Samagra member ID.
- Select the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme and complete the form, entering bank details exactly as printed in the passbook.
- Upload the death certificate, BPL card, age proof and photograph, then submit and save the acknowledgement number.
A widow who cannot manage either route herself can also apply through the nearest public service centre, as the Indore district administration lists for this scheme. The sanctioning authority is the Chief Executive Officer, District Panchayat in rural areas, or the Municipal Commissioner or Chief Municipal Officer in urban areas, with the gram panchayat secretary handling the field-level record in villages.
How do I check my widow pension status?
- Open socialsecurity.mp.gov.in and select the pension or beneficiary status option.
- Enter your 9-digit Samagra member ID, it works even if the acknowledgement number is lost.
- See whether the record shows the pension as sanctioned and which month was last disbursed.
- Compare with your bank passbook. Sanctioned on the portal but missing in the passbook means a DBT failure, not a sanction failure, and the fix is at the bank.
- If nothing appears after 15 working days, return to the office with your acknowledgement and ask for the case position in writing.
Why do widow pension applications get rejected or stop?
- Age outside the 40 to 79 band. Under 40, the Kalyani pension is the correct scheme; at 80 and above, the case moves out of this scheme.
- No BPL card, or a household that no longer appears in the BPL list after a survey update.
- Samagra mismatch, the date of birth or the name in Samagra differing from the age proof or the death certificate. Get Samagra corrected first.
- Death certificate not produced, most often where the death was never registered. The registration has to be completed before anything else can move.
- Remarriage, which ends eligibility. Continuing to draw the pension after remarriage attracts recovery.
- Bank account failure, dormant, closed, or an account still in the late husband's name.
- Verification not completed, where the beneficiary was not found at the address during the local body's periodic check.
The clerical failures — Samagra mismatch, bank account defects and an unregistered death: are the ones a family can fix in a week. Do those before resubmitting rather than filing the same application again.
Key dates and timing
The scheme has run in Madhya Pradesh since 1 April 2009 and is open all year. No last date to apply has been announced. The binding date is the 15 working day decision window under the Public Service Guarantee Act, 2010, running from the day a complete application is accepted. An incomplete application never starts that clock, which is exactly why the dated acknowledgement matters.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension in Madhya Pradesh?
Madhya Pradesh pays Rs 600 per month under this scheme, as stated on the state social security pension portal. The amount is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer into the widow's own bank account, and works out to Rs 7,200 a year.
What is the age limit for the Indira Gandhi widow pension in MP?
The scheme covers widows in the age group of 40 to 79 years. On crossing 80, a beneficiary moves out of this scheme, and the state's old-age pension arrangements are the route to check with the local body.
Is a BPL card compulsory?
Yes. The portal states that the scheme is for widows living below the poverty line as defined by Government of India norms, and it lists the BPL card among the required documents. A widow above the BPL line is not eligible under this particular scheme.
Who is not eligible for this pension?
Widows under 40 or aged 80 and above, widows whose households are not in the below-poverty-line category, non-residents of Madhya Pradesh, and women who have remarried are not eligible. Remarriage ends widow status and so ends the entitlement.
Can a widow under 40 get any pension in Madhya Pradesh?
Yes, through a different scheme. Madhya Pradesh runs the Mukhyamantri Samajik Suraksha Kalyani Pension Yojana for widows from the age of 18, so a widow below 40 should apply there rather than under the Indira Gandhi scheme.
How long does the sanction take?
Applications must be decided within 15 working days under the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Guarantee Act, 2010. The sanctioning authority is the District Panchayat Chief Executive Officer in rural areas and the Municipal Commissioner or Chief Municipal Officer in urban areas.
Since when has the scheme run in Madhya Pradesh?
The state's pension portal records the scheme as commencing on 1 April 2009 through the Social Justice Department, as Madhya Pradesh's implementation of the central National Social Assistance Programme component.
My pension stopped without notice — what do I do?
Check the bank account first, because a dormant, closed or non-Aadhaar- seeded account causes the DBT credit to fail silently. If the account is in order, take the acknowledgement to the gram panchayat or urban body, then escalate to the District Panchayat CEO or Municipal Commissioner, and file a complaint on CM Helpline 181 if there is still no response.
