Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana is a Madhya Pradesh scheme that pays marriage assistance to poor, destitute, widowed and abandoned families when their daughter marries in a government-organised group wedding. The bride must be at least 18 and the groom at least 21, and the family must hold a Samagra ID. Apply free at the gram panchayat or urban body.
What is Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?
Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana, widely known in Madhya Pradesh as the Kanyadan Yojana, is a state marriage-assistance scheme run by the Social Justice and Divyangjan Welfare Department. The scheme pays for the marriage of daughters from poor, destitute, widowed, divorced and abandoned families, and it does so through group marriage functions organised by local bodies rather than through cash handed over for a private wedding.
According to the Social Justice and Divyangjan Welfare Department portal, the department administers the Kanya Vivah and Nikah schemes through a dedicated marriage portal at vivahportal.mp.gov.in, where the local body records each case, the couple's details and the date of the group function. The department lists the scheme alongside its pension programmes as part of its social assistance mandate.
The design of the scheme is deliberate. Madhya Pradesh links the money to a samuhik vivah, a collective wedding of many couples on one day arranged by the gram panchayat, janpad panchayat, nagar palika or nagar nigam. That keeps the cost of the ceremony itself off the family, ensures a public record of the marriage, and lets the administration verify the ages of both parties on the spot. Families who marry a daughter privately and then apply for the money afterwards are the single largest group of rejected applicants.
What the scheme is trying to do
- Remove the debt that a poor family takes on to marry a daughter.
- Give the bride household goods and a small cash base in her own name.
- Discourage child marriage by making 18 and 21 a hard, checked condition.
- Provide the same support to widows, divorced women and abandoned women who are remarrying.
How much assistance does Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana give?
The official Indore district portal of the Madhya Pradesh government lists the assistance as Rs 28,000 per couple, broken up as follows:
| Component | Amount | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Household essentials for the bride | Rs 17,000 | Goods given at the function |
| Smartphone | Rs 3,000 | Provided to the bride |
| Marriage arrangement: ornaments, utensils, ceremony | Rs 3,000 | Goods / arrangement |
| Cost of organising the group wedding | Rs 2,000 | Paid to the organising body |
A caution that matters more than the table. Madhya Pradesh has revised the Kanya Vivah assistance figure more than once since the scheme started, and different district pages carry different vintages of the number. Treat Rs 28,000 as the figure carried on the district portal at the time of checking, and confirm the amount actually payable at your district's next group function with the gram panchayat secretary, the janpad CEO office or the nagar palika before you plan around it. Do not accept a figure quoted by an agent.
The important structural point does not change with the amount: only a part of the assistance reaches the bride as cash in her bank account, and the rest comes as goods and as the cost of running the ceremony. A family expecting the whole sum as cash will be disappointed.
Who is eligible for Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?
You can be considered if:
- The bride's family is a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- The bride has completed 18 years and the groom has completed 21 years on the date of marriage.
- The family belongs to the target group, poor, destitute, widowed, divorced or abandoned households, as identified by the local body.
- The family is registered on the Samagra portal and has a 9-digit Samagra member ID.
- The marriage will be solemnised in a group marriage function organised by the panchayat or urban local body.
You are not eligible and cannot apply if:
- The bride is under 18 or the groom is under 21. This is not a relaxable condition, and an under-age case is a child-marriage offence, not merely an ineligible application.
- The marriage is a private ceremony held outside the official group function.
- The family is not resident in Madhya Pradesh.
- The family has no Samagra registration and does not complete it before the cut-off for the function.
- The same bride has already drawn assistance under this scheme or under Mukhyamantri Nikah Yojana. Aadhaar-based de-duplication is used to catch repeat claims.
Widows, divorced women and abandoned women are specifically inside the scheme rather than outside it. A widow remarrying can be the beneficiary in her own right, and the district administration lists exactly this category among the families the scheme is meant for.
What documents are required for Kanyadan Yojana?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Samagra ID (9-digit) of bride and family | Yes | The case cannot be entered without it |
| Bride's age proof | Yes | Must show 18 years completed |
| Groom's age proof | Yes | Must show 21 years completed |
| MP residence / domicile proof | Yes | Domicile certificate or address-bearing ration card |
| Bride's bank passbook | Yes | DBT account, in her own name, Aadhaar-seeded |
| Aadhaar of bride and groom | Yes | Used for de-duplication |
| Widow / divorce / abandonment proof | No | Only for those categories |

How to apply for Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana
- Register the family on Samagra at samagra.gov.in or through the gram panchayat, and note down the 9-digit Samagra member ID of the bride. Skip this and nothing else can proceed.
- Find out the date of the next group marriage function in your area from the gram panchayat secretary, the janpad panchayat, or the nagar palika or nagar nigam office if you live in a town.
- Collect the prescribed application form from that same office. There is no charge for the form.
- Fill the form and attach the bride's and groom's age proofs, Samagra ID, residence proof, Aadhaar copies and the bride's bank passbook copy. Add the widow, divorce or abandonment document only if it applies.
- Submit the form to the gram panchayat or janpad panchayat if you are in a rural area, or to the nagar nigam, nagar palika or nagar panchayat if you are in an urban area, well before the announced function date.
- Get an acknowledgement with the registration or case number. The local body enters the case on vivahportal.mp.gov.in against the Samagra ID.
- Attend the group marriage function on the announced date with both the bride and the groom. Verification of age and identity happens here.
- Receive the goods at the function, and track the DBT credit of the cash portion into the bride's bank account afterwards.
There is no self-service online application for a family. The online record is created by the local body on the vivah portal; your job is to get the paperwork to that office correctly and on time.
How do I check the status of my Kanya Vivah application?
Status for this scheme is tracked through the office that entered your case, not by a public self-lookup with a login of your own.
- Return to the gram panchayat, janpad panchayat or urban body with your acknowledgement number and Samagra ID and ask for the entry status on vivahportal.mp.gov.in.
- Check the bride's bank passbook or SMS alerts for the DBT credit after the function date.
- If nothing shows several weeks after the function, escalate to the Chief Executive Officer of the district panchayat in rural areas or the Municipal Commissioner or Chief Municipal Officer in urban areas, these are the sanctioning authorities for the department's social assistance schemes.
- If the office does not respond, register a complaint on CM Helpline 181.
Why do Kanya Vivah applications get rejected?
- Marriage held privately and not in the government group function. This is the most common reason and it cannot be fixed after the fact.
- Bride under 18 or groom under 21 on the marriage date.
- No Samagra registration, or the Samagra record showing a different name or date of birth from the age proof.
- Bank account problems: account closed, not in the bride's own name, or not seeded with Aadhaar, so the DBT fails and bounces back.
- Duplicate claim, where the same bride was already assisted under Kanya Vivah or Nikah Yojana.
- Application submitted after the cut-off for the function.
Most of these are correctable before the function, and almost none afterwards. Fix the Samagra record and the bank account first, because those two produce silent failures that only surface when the money does not arrive.
Key dates and timing
Madhya Pradesh does not run this scheme on a single state-wide last date. Each district and each local body announces its own group marriage functions during the year, typically clustered around the traditional wedding seasons. The practical deadline for a family is therefore the registration cut-off for the specific function it wants to join, which the panchayat or urban body announces locally. Ask early; registration usually closes several weeks before the function so the administration can verify ages and prepare the goods.
Help, grievance and a warning about agents
- CM Helpline 181; Madhya Pradesh's grievance line for state schemes, available by phone, mobile app and WhatsApp.
- Directorate of Social Justice and Divyangjan Welfare, Link Road No. 3, Bhopal 462016 to phone 0755-2556916, email dir.socialjustice@mp.gov.in.
- District Panchayat CEO (rural) or Municipal Commissioner / Chief Municipal Officer (urban) for sanction-level disputes.
Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana costs nothing to apply for. The form is free, the panchayat entry is free, and no official will ask for a share of the assistance. Anyone who offers to "get your name into the group wedding list" for a fee is running a scam, and that should itself go to CM Helpline 181.

Frequently asked questions
How much money is given under Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?
The Indore district portal of the Madhya Pradesh government lists a total of Rs 28,000 per couple, split as Rs 17,000 of household goods for the bride, Rs 3,000 towards a smartphone, Rs 3,000 for marriage arrangements such as ornaments and utensils, and Rs 2,000 paid to the body organising the group wedding. Madhya Pradesh has revised this figure more than once since the scheme began, so confirm the rate applying to your district's current function before you apply.
Can a girl get the benefit for a marriage performed at home?
No. Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana assistance is tied to a group marriage function organised by the gram panchayat, janpad panchayat, nagar palika or nagar nigam. A private wedding at home or in a temple, performed outside the official group function, does not qualify for the assistance.
What is the minimum age for the bride and groom?
The bride must have completed 18 years and the groom 21 years on the date of the marriage, as required by the district administration listings for the scheme. Under-age marriages are refused outright, and the case is also reportable under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
Who cannot apply for Mukhyamantri Kanya Vivah Yojana?
Families that are not resident in Madhya Pradesh, brides under 18, grooms under 21, and couples marrying outside a government-organised group marriage function are not eligible. A family not registered on the Samagra portal also cannot be processed until registration is done.
Is Samagra ID compulsory for this scheme?
Yes. The Madhya Pradesh government identifies every beneficiary of this scheme through the 9-digit Samagra member ID, and the local body enters the case against that ID. Register the family on samagra.gov.in or at the gram panchayat before submitting the marriage application.
How is the money paid to the bride?
The cash portion is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer into the bride's own bank account after the group marriage is completed and the local body certifies it. The goods portion is given in kind at the function itself, so the bride needs a live, Aadhaar-seeded bank account in her own name.
Does the Nikah scheme work the same way?
Yes, in structure. Madhya Pradesh runs Mukhyamantri Nikah Yojana as the parallel route for Muslim families, using the same vivahportal.mp.gov.in system, the same group-function requirement and the same Samagra-based identification. A family applies under one route, not both.
Where do I complain if the assistance is not paid after the wedding?
Lodge the complaint on CM Helpline 181, which is the Madhya Pradesh government's single grievance line for state schemes. Quote the Samagra ID, the date of the group marriage function and the name of the organising body. The Directorate of Social Justice at Bhopal can also be reached on 0755-2556916.
