What is Poshan Aahar Yojana in Madhya Pradesh?

Poshan Aahar Yojana is the name Madhya Pradesh uses for its supplementary nutrition programme, run by the Women and Child Development Department (Mahila evam Bal Vikas Vibhag) through the state's network of anganwadi centres. The programme delivers free food; not cash: to children aged 6 months to 6 years, pregnant women, lactating mothers and severely malnourished children.

The programme is the Madhya Pradesh implementation of the supplementary nutrition component of Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, the Government of India's integrated nutrition support programme. According to the Ministry of Women and Child Development, Poshan 2.0 covers maternal nutrition, infant and young child feeding norms, treatment protocols for severe and moderate acute malnutrition, and wellness through AYUSH practices. The Madhya Pradesh Women and Child Development Department runs the delivery, monitoring it through mpwcdmis.gov.in and the national Poshan Tracker.

Key features

  • Benefit is in kind; fortified food, supplied free.
  • No income test, no caste test. Age and pregnancy or lactation status decide eligibility.
  • Supplementary nutrition is provided for roughly 300 days a year.
  • Delivery splits by age: Take Home Ration for 6 months to 3 years, hot cooked meals for 3 to 6 years.
  • Registration happens at the anganwadi centre, through the anganwadi worker.
  • Funding is shared between the Government of India and the Madhya Pradesh government.

Who is eligible for Poshan Aahar?

You can enrol if:

  • The beneficiary is a child who has completed 6 months of age and has not yet turned 6 years.
  • The beneficiary is a pregnant woman at any stage of pregnancy.
  • The beneficiary is a lactating mother, normally for the first six months after delivery under the standard norms.
  • The beneficiary is a child identified as malnourished during the anganwadi growth monitoring, who receives additional support.
  • The family lives within the catchment area of the anganwadi centre where registration is sought.

You cannot apply; or you are not eligible, if:

  • The child is under 6 months old. Exclusive breastfeeding is the recommended practice up to six months, so supplementary food starts only after that.
  • The child has crossed 6 years of age. From Class 1 onward the child moves to the PM POSHAN midday meal programme in school, not the anganwadi.
  • You are asking for cash instead of food. Poshan Aahar is not a cash-transfer scheme, and no monetary equivalent is paid.
  • You are seeking to register at an anganwadi outside your residential area. Beneficiaries are mapped to the centre serving their locality.
  • The claim is for an adult who is neither pregnant nor lactating. Adolescent girls are covered by separate schemes such as the Kishori Balika programme, Lalima and Udita, not by this one.

There is no income limit and no caste restriction. A child from any household in Madhya Pradesh, in the eligible age band and living in the anganwadi's area, is entitled to enrol.

What is actually given, and to whom?

Children aged 6 months to 3 years; Take Home Ration. The Take Home Ration delivers ready-to-eat or fortified premix food directly to the household. In Madhya Pradesh the items supplied at various points have included halwa premix, child food and khichdi, produced and supplied under state arrangements including MP Agro plants. The point of THR is that a child under three eats at home; making the family walk to a centre for a cooked meal simply meant the meal was missed. Under national norms, children aged 6 months to 3 years are entitled to a supplement of 500 calories and 12 to 15 grams of protein per child per day.

Children aged 3 to 6 years: hot cooked meals. Children of this age come to the anganwadi and are fed on site: breakfast and a midday meal, prepared through the common kitchen arrangement. In urban areas the food is prepared by local self-help groups under the common chulha menu; in rural areas it is supplied through the department's own arrangements.

Pregnant women and lactating mothers. Fortified take-home items; in Madhya Pradesh these have included wheat-soya barfi premix, gram flour laddu and khichdi; are supplied through the anganwadi in prescribed quantities on specified days of the week.

Severely malnourished children. Children flagged as severely acute malnourished during weighing receive additional nutrition and are referred to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres run jointly with the Health Department for supervised treatment.

How to enrol in Poshan Aahar Yojana

  1. Find the anganwadi centre for your locality. Every ward and village in Madhya Pradesh is mapped to one. The anganwadi worker or ASHA will tell you which centre serves your house.
  2. Take your Samagra ID and Aadhaar, the mother's Aadhaar is the one used for an infant; along with the child's birth certificate or immunisation card if you have it.
  3. Ask the anganwadi worker to register the beneficiary. The worker records the details in the centre register and enters them on the Poshan Tracker, the national application used to log every beneficiary and every ration issued.
  4. Get the child weighed and measured so that growth monitoring starts. This is what identifies malnutrition early and what triggers the extra support.
  5. Collect the ration on the notified days, or send the child for the cooked meal if the child is over three years old. Keep the Mother and Child Protection card updated at each visit.

There is no online self-registration for Poshan Aahar and no application fee. The mpwcdmis.gov.in portal is a monitoring and reporting system for the department and its field staff, not a citizen application form.

How pregnant women register

  1. Register the pregnancy at the anganwadi centre or the sub-health centre as early as possible in the first trimester.
  2. Obtain the Mother and Child Protection (MCP) card, which records antenatal checkups, weight and immunisation.
  3. Collect the take-home ration on the days notified by your anganwadi, and continue through the lactation period.

Early registration matters twice over: it starts the nutrition supply sooner, and it is also the entry point for the separate cash maternity benefits under Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana.

How to check your entitlement and the centre's records

  1. Ask the anganwadi worker to show your entry in the centre register and on the Poshan Tracker.
  2. Check the growth chart in your Mother and Child Protection card at each weighing, it shows whether the child is in the normal, moderately underweight or severely underweight band.
  3. Raise a shortfall with the anganwadi supervisor, then with the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for your project.
  4. Escalate through the District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development, at the district headquarters.

Common problems and how to fix them

  • Name not on the centre register. Usually a Samagra or Aadhaar mismatch. Get the Samagra member record corrected first, then ask the worker to re-enter.
  • Ration not delivered for a month. State audit reports have previously flagged delivery fraud in the take-home ration supply chain, including vehicles logged as trucks that were in fact two-wheelers, with rations recorded as delivered but never handed over. Insist that the register entry match what you actually received, and complain if it does not.
  • Child dropped on turning three. The child is not dropped, only moved from take-home ration to the hot cooked meal at the centre. Confirm the transfer with the worker.
  • Anganwadi centre closed or the worker absent. Report to the supervisor and the CDPO; a closed centre is a service failure, not a reason to go without.
  • Child weighed as malnourished but nothing followed. Ask for a referral slip to the Nutrition Rehabilitation Centre.

Recent policy position

Poshan Aahar and its take-home ration component grew into one of the most visible welfare programmes in Madhya Pradesh's remote districts over the past two decades. Press reporting in March 2026 noted that the state government under Chief Minister Mohan Yadav was reviewing the structure of the take-home ration scheme, including how the supply is produced and delivered. As of this update no notification withdrawing supplementary nutrition has been issued, and anganwadi centres continue to serve beneficiaries. Because the delivery model is under review, check the current supply arrangement with your anganwadi worker rather than assuming last year's items and schedule still apply.

Where to complain

  • Anganwadi supervisor, then the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for your ICDS project.
  • District Programme Officer, Women and Child Development, at the district headquarters.
  • Directorate of Women and Child Development, Madhya Pradesh, Vijayaraje Vatsalya Bhavan, Plot No. 28A, Arera Hills, Bhopal 462011 to telephone 0755-2550911.
  • CM Helpline 181 for a complaint the district level has not resolved.
  • Child Helpline 1098, the 24x7 line run by the department under Mission Vatsalya, for a child in danger, neglect or distress.

Poshan Aahar is free at every stage. No anganwadi worker, supervisor or supplier may charge a family for registration or for the ration itself, and any such demand should be reported to the CDPO or on CM Helpline 181.

Documents required

Samagra ID (family and member)
The Madhya Pradesh family database ID used by the anganwadi worker to register the mother or child and to avoid duplicate entries.
Aadhaar card of the mother
Required for registration on the national Poshan Tracker, which records every beneficiary and every ration issued.
Aadhaar of the child, if issuedoptional
Not compulsory for an infant; the mother's Aadhaar is used instead.
Birth certificate or immunisation card of the childoptional
Used to confirm the child's age. The anganwadi's own growth register is accepted where a certificate has not yet been issued.
Mother and Child Protection (MCP) cardoptional
Issued at the anganwadi or health centre; carries weight, height and immunisation records that decide whether a child is classed as malnourished.
Residence proofoptional
The anganwadi worker verifies residence within the centre's area during the household survey; a separate certificate is usually not demanded.

Frequently asked questions

Who gets food under Poshan Aahar Yojana in Madhya Pradesh?

Children aged 6 months to 6 years, pregnant women, lactating mothers and severely malnourished children get free supplementary nutrition through anganwadi centres. The Women and Child Development Department runs the programme, and there is no income or caste condition for enrolment.

How do I enrol my child?

Go to the anganwadi centre for your area with your Samagra ID and Aadhaar and ask the anganwadi worker to register the child. There is no online application and no fee; the worker enters the details on the Poshan Tracker.

What exactly is given to a child aged 6 months to 3 years?

Children aged 6 months to 3 years receive Take Home Ration, fortified ready-to-eat or premix food supplied through anganwadi centres, rather than a cooked meal, because infants of that age are fed at home. Items supplied in Madhya Pradesh have included halwa premix, child food and khichdi.

What do children aged 3 to 6 years get?

Children aged 3 to 6 years get hot cooked food at the anganwadi centre, breakfast and a midday meal: prepared under the common kitchen arrangement, by self-help groups in urban areas and through the department's rural arrangements elsewhere.

Is Poshan Aahar a cash scheme?

No. Poshan Aahar is a benefit in kind, food, not money. Cash maternity benefits for pregnant and lactating mothers come from separate schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana and the state's own maternity programmes.

Who pays for the programme?

Supplementary nutrition is a centrally sponsored activity under Saksham Anganwadi and Poshan 2.0, with the Government of India funding a share and the Madhya Pradesh government meeting the rest from the state budget.

What if the anganwadi in my village is not giving ration?

Report it to the supervisor or the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for your project, and if that fails use CM Helpline 181. The Directorate of Women and Child Development in Bhopal can be reached on 0755-2550911.

Does a malnourished child get anything extra?

Yes. Children identified as severely acute malnourished are given additional nutrition and are referred to Nutrition Rehabilitation Centres run with the Health Department, where treatment and feeding are supervised.
