Promotion of Organic Farming - HDPE Vermibed Scheme (Madhya Pradesh)
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Promotion of Organic Farming (HDPE Vermibed) Scheme is a Madhya Pradesh Horticulture Department component that pays 50 per cent of the cost of an HDPE vermibed so farmers can make their own vermicompost. The farmer funds the other 50 per cent. All farmer categories get the same rate, and registration is free on the MPFSTS portal at mpfsts.mp.gov.in.
What is the HDPE Vermibed Scheme in Madhya Pradesh?
Promotion of Organic Farming (HDPE Vermibed) Scheme is a subsidy component of the Horticulture and Food Processing Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, delivered at district level under agricultural development funding tied to the National Agricultural Development Scheme. According to the Khargone district Horticulture Department page for the component, the government meets "50 per cent of the total cost for applying the vermibed" and the farmer contributes the remaining half.
An HDPE vermibed is a prefabricated composting tank made from high-density polyethylene fabric. It is laid on a levelled, shaded patch of ground, filled with a bedding layer of dry crop residue and semi-decomposed cow dung, seeded with earthworms, kept moist, and harvested every few weeks as vermicompost. Compared with the brick-lined pit that older extension programmes promoted, the HDPE bed costs less, needs no masonry, drains through a fitted outlet, can be emptied and refilled quickly, and can be folded and moved if the farmer changes plots.
The scheme's purpose is to move a share of Madhya Pradesh's horticulture growers away from bought chemical fertiliser toward manure they produce themselves. Two things follow from that. First, the farmer gets a recurring input at close to zero cash cost, using dung and residue already on the farm. Second, the compost improves soil structure and water-holding capacity in the light and medium soils of the state, which matters for vegetable and orchard blocks that depend on drip irrigation.
Promotion of Organic Farming (HDPE Vermibed) Scheme is a small-ticket component by design. It is not a business grant and does not fund a commercial compost unit. It funds one unit of on-farm composting capacity, which is why the paper requirement is light and the decision is taken at district level.
Who is eligible for the HDPE Vermibed Scheme?
You can apply if:
- You are a farmer resident in Madhya Pradesh with land recorded in your own name in the khasra.
- You have level, shaded space on the holding where the bed can stand and drain, and a reliable source of cow dung and crop residue to charge it.
- You are registered on MPFSTS, the Horticulture Department's farmer subsidy tracking system.
- You hold a bank account seeded with Aadhaar for the transfer.
- Your district has an open target for the component in the current financial year.
The district page is clear that the rate does not vary by category: general category, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, below poverty line and senior citizen beneficiaries all receive the same grant. Category affects which target pool the application competes in, not the money.
You cannot apply if:
- You are landless, or farm as a tenant with no land in your own name.
- You have already bought and installed the vermibed before applying. The grant follows a sanction, and a pre-dated bill is not eligible.
- Your bank account is not linked to Aadhaar, which stops the payment.
- The district target for the year is exhausted, in which case the file waits for the next allocation rather than being sanctioned.
- You are seeking funding for a commercial vermicompost plant; this component covers an on-farm bed, not a production unit.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Aadhaar card | Yes | MPFSTS registration and bank seeding |
| Khasra copy | Yes | Land record in the applicant's own name |
| Bank passbook | Yes | First page showing account number and IFSC |
| Passport-size photograph | Yes | Uploaded with the application |
| Caste certificate | No | Only to apply against an SC or ST target |
| Purchase bill for the vermibed | Yes | Produced at verification, before payment |
The district page lists the photograph, khasra copy, bank passbook and Aadhaar card as the documents needed to file. The purchase bill is a payment document rather than an application document. The grant is calculated against it and the approved unit cost, whichever is lower.
How to apply for the HDPE Vermibed Scheme
- Register on MPFSTS. Open mpfsts.mp.gov.in/mphd, the Madhya Pradesh Farmers Subsidy Tracking System of the Horticulture and Food Processing Department, and use नवीन पंजीयन (निःशुल्क), New Registration, free of charge. Aadhaar-linked and biometric registration are both supported.
- Or apply through an online centre. The district page states that farmers register "at any online centre". MPOnline kiosks and Common Service Centres file the application with the same four documents; this is the usual route in villages.
- Choose the scheme. Under the Horticulture Department's list, select the Promotion of Organic Farming (HDPE Vermibed) component for the financial year in which targets are open.
- Fill the form and upload documents; Aadhaar, khasra, bank passbook and photograph — and enter your land and village details.
- Submit and print the acknowledgement using आवेदन प्रिंट (Application Print). Keep the application number; every later query depends on it.
- Wait for selection. Where applications exceed the district target, the department selects beneficiaries by lottery and publishes the लाटरी द्वारा चयनित कृषक की सूची on the portal.
- Collect the sanction order from the District Horticulture Office before buying the bed.
- Buy the HDPE vermibed from a registered supplier, with a GST bill in the applicant's own name, and install it on level shaded ground.
- Get it inspected and geotagged by Horticulture Department staff. The MPFSTS downloads section carries the department's geotagging process flow.
- Receive the 50 per cent grant by transfer into your Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
How to run the vermibed after you get it
The grant buys the bed; the compost depends on how it is charged and maintained. Practical points the extension staff will raise at inspection:
- Site it in shade; under a tree, a thatch or a shadenet, because direct summer sun in Madhya Pradesh will kill the worm population.
- Charge it in layers: coarse crop residue at the bottom, then partly decomposed dung. Fresh, hot dung applied directly drives the worms out.
- Keep it moist, not wet. The bed should feel like a wrung-out cloth; the fitted outlet is there to drain excess.
- Protect against ants, rats and poultry, which are the common causes of a failed first cycle.
- Harvest by heaping, letting the worms move down away from light, and sieving the finished compost off the top.
How do I check my application status?
- Open mpfsts.mp.gov.in/mphd and go to the Farmers menu.
- Select आवेदन स्थिति (Application Status) and enter your application number, or search by Aadhaar number if the number is lost.
- Check the district lottery selected farmers list for the component.
- After installation, confirm with the Senior Horticulture Development Officer that the geotagged verification report has been uploaded; payments stall here more often than anywhere else.
Why do vermibed applications get rejected?
- Land not recorded in the applicant's name in the khasra.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, blocking the transfer after approval.
- Bill in another name, or dated before the sanction order.
- No suitable shaded site found at inspection.
- Not drawn in the lottery, which is a target constraint rather than a judgement on the application. Reapply in the next cycle.
- Duplicate MPFSTS registration under two Aadhaar or mobile combinations.
Key dates and season
There is no fixed statewide last date. Registration opens when the Horticulture Department releases the year's targets, and closes for a component once the district target is filled. The best operational window to install a vermibed in Madhya Pradesh is after the monsoon, from October onward, when moisture is easy to maintain and dung and residue are plentiful, so that the first harvest is ready before the summer heat.
Where to complain
- District Horticulture Officer, for sanction, inspection and payment delays.
- MPFSTS helpdesk, mpfsts.helpdesk@mp.gov.in, for registration and status problems on the portal.
- Horticulture and Food Processing Department, Vindhyachal Bhawan, 6th Floor, Arera Hills, Bhopal.
- CM Helpline 181, which registers a trackable grievance and routes it to the district office.
Registration on MPFSTS is free and the grant reaches the farmer's own account. No agent is entitled to a share of it.

Frequently asked questions
How much subsidy does the HDPE Vermibed Scheme give?
The scheme covers 50 per cent of the total cost of the vermibed, according to the Khargone district Horticulture Department page, with the farmer paying the remaining 50 per cent. The rupee amount depends on the unit cost approved by the Horticulture Department for the year.
What is an HDPE vermibed?
An HDPE vermibed is a ready-made tank of high-density polyethylene fabric, typically a rectangular bed set on level ground under shade, in which earthworms convert cow dung and crop residue into vermicompost. It replaces a brick-and-cement pit and can be shifted or folded away.
Which department runs this scheme?
The Horticulture and Food Processing Department of Madhya Pradesh runs the component, under agricultural development funding linked to the National Agricultural Development Scheme.
Who is eligible?
All farmer categories qualify on the same terms. The district page states that general, Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, below poverty line and senior citizen beneficiaries all receive an equal grant amount.
How do I apply for the vermibed subsidy?
Register free on the MPFSTS portal at mpfsts.mp.gov.in/mphd and file the application under the Horticulture Department, or have it filed at any MPOnline kiosk or Common Service Centre with your Aadhaar, khasra, bank passbook and photograph.
Is the grant paid in advance?
No. The vermibed grant is a reimbursement paid after the bed is bought, installed and physically verified by Horticulture Department staff, into the farmer's Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
Can I sell the vermicompost I make?
Yes. The compost belongs to the farmer, whether it is used on the farm or sold. The stated purpose of the scheme is access to organic manure to raise yields, and nothing in the component restricts sale of the output.
Where do I complain about a delayed vermibed grant?
Contact the District Horticulture Officer first, then use the Madhya Pradesh CM Helpline on 181 for a trackable complaint, or write to the MPFSTS helpdesk at mpfsts.helpdesk@mp.gov.in for portal and status issues.
