What is the Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe students in Mizoram?

Post-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribe Students is a centrally sponsored scholarship implemented in Mizoram by the Mizoram Scholarship Board, which operates from Dawrpui Vengthar, Aizawl. According to the Board's published scheme booklet, the objective is "to provide financial assistance to students belonging to Scheduled Tribes pursuing Post-Matriculation recognized courses in recognized institutions", and the scheme "covers professional/ technical as well as non-professional and non-technical courses at various levels and also correspondence courses including distance and continuing education". Funding is shared 90:10 between the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and the Mizoram state government.

In a state where the Scheduled Tribe population is the overwhelming majority, this is the scholarship that matters most. The Board's own dashboard puts the numbers beyond argument: 32,375 beneficiaries under this scheme, against a sanction of Rs 4,775.00 lakh received from the Government of India on 23 June 2026. No other scheme the Board runs comes close. The Post-Matric Merit Scholarship, by comparison, had 96 beneficiaries, and the Mizoram Research Fellowship had 13.

The scholarship covers the long stretch of education after matriculation, from Class XI right up to a post-doctoral fellowship, which means a single student may draw it, with annual renewal, for a decade or more.

Who is eligible for the ST post-matric scholarship in Mizoram?

You can apply if all four conditions are satisfied:

  • You belong to a Scheduled Tribe. The tribal certificate must be issued by a competent authority such as the Deputy Commissioner or a First Class Magistrate.
  • Your family income is Rs 2,50,000 a year or less. The Board states that "Parents/Guardians' income from all sources should not exceed Rs. 2,50,000/- (Rs. Two lakh Fifty Thousand only) per annum". Income from all sources means exactly that, not just salary.
  • You are permanently settled in Mizoram, evidenced by an up-to-date Permanent Residential Certificate.
  • You are studying anywhere from Class XI up to a post-doctoral fellowship, in a recognised institution and a recognised course.

You cannot apply, or you will be found not eligible, if:

  • You do not belong to a Scheduled Tribe. Scheduled Caste students apply under the separate SC post-matric scheme, which in Mizoram is handled offline through the Board. Minority community students apply under the minority schemes on the National Scholarship Portal.
  • Your family income exceeds Rs 2,50,000 a year.
  • You are not permanently settled in Mizoram. The Board is explicit on this point: an applicant who does not reside permanently in Mizoram must select their own domicile state when applying, not Mizoram.
  • You are below Class XI. Students in Classes IX and X apply under the Pre-Matric Scholarship for Scheduled Tribes instead, which had 8,875 beneficiaries in the same year.
  • Your income or tribal certificate comes from a Village Council or Local Council. The Board states that certificates from these bodies are not accepted by the Ministry, and this single rule causes a large share of rejections in Mizoram every year.
  • Your income certificate is not from the current year. For 2026-27, the Board says a certificate not issued in 2026 will not be accepted from fresh applicants.

What documents are required?

Document Fresh Renewal Notes
Previous year marksheet Yes Yes Required in both cases
Tribal certificate Yes No From DC or First Class Magistrate only
Income certificate Yes No Up to Rs 2,50,000; must be issued in the current year
Hosteller certificate Yes Yes Only for students claiming the hosteller rate
Permanent Residential Certificate Yes , Must be up to date
Aadhaar card Yes : Mobile number must be Aadhaar-linked
Bank passbook, self-account Yes , Must be Aadhaar-seeded for payment

The fresh-versus-renewal split above is set out directly in the Board's 2026-27 notice, and it saves renewing students a great deal of running around: a student who is renewing does not need to produce a fresh tribal certificate or a fresh income certificate, only the previous year's marksheet and, if applicable, the hosteller certificate.

How to apply for the Mizoram ST post-matric scholarship

  1. Check the current notice on msb.mizoram.gov.in under Notice Board. The 2026-27 tribal scholarship notice confirms the portal to use and the dates.
  2. Link your mobile number to Aadhaar, and make sure your bank account is a self-account seeded with Aadhaar. The Board lists both as conditions, because payment runs on an Aadhaar-based bridge.
  3. Register on the National Scholarship Portal at scholarships.gov.in and complete the one-time biometric registration the Board requires for central scheme applicants.
  4. Fill the application form completely. The Board's citizen's charter lists "All mandatory fields in the scholarship application must be correctly filled up" as an explicit expectation, and blank mandatory fields are a routine cause of rejection.
  5. Upload the documents, tribal certificate, income certificate, previous marksheet, residential certificate, for fresh applications.
  6. Print the submitted application and hand the hard copy with all documents to your school, college or institution. The Board warns that an application not submitted to the institution cannot be verified. Students studying outside Mizoram send the hard copy to the Mizoram Scholarship Board, Dawrpui Vengthar, Aizawl, for both online and offline verification.
  7. Chase your Institute Nodal Officer to complete institution verification before the deadline, since verification is a separate step from your submission and the scholarship dies if the institution misses it.

Key dates for 2026-27

  • 1 July 2026 β€” application window opened
  • 30 September 2026, last date for students to apply
  • 31 October 2026; last date for institution verification
  • December to March; payment window, per the Board's service delivery standard, subject to receipt of the sanction

The Board's citizen's charter also sets out the rhythm of the wider year: April to May for disseminating information to schools and colleges, May to June for training institution staff on verification, June to November for the application window in general, and August to December for scrutiny, verification and approval.

How is the scholarship paid, and how much?

Rates under the post-matric scholarship for Scheduled Tribes are notified by the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and vary by course group and by whether the student is a hosteller or a day scholar. The award has two parts: a maintenance allowance and reimbursement of non-refundable compulsory fees charged by the institution. Because the notified rate table is a central document that is revised from time to time, check the current rates on scholarships.gov.in rather than relying on a figure quoted second hand.

What Mizoram publishes is the aggregate: Rs 4,775 lakh sanctioned for 32,375 beneficiaries in 2025-26. Payment for central schemes is made through PFMS using the Aadhaar bridge, according to the Board's citizen's charter, with the Under Secretary and State Nodal Officer named as the responsible officer.

Why applications get rejected, and how to avoid it

  • Certificate from the wrong authority. Income or tribal certificates from a Village Council or Local Council are rejected. Get them from the Deputy Commissioner or a First Class Magistrate.
  • Stale income certificate. For 2026-27 the certificate must be issued in 2026 for fresh applicants.
  • Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, or dormant. The Board's charter warns applicants to keep the Aadhaar card updated and the bank account frequently used "in order to avoid ineligibility/dormant account".
  • Account in a parent's name. The scheme requires a self-account.
  • Hard copy never submitted to the institution. Online submission alone is not enough, and the Board says so in capitals in its notice.
  • Institution verification missed. The institution must be registered on the National Scholarship Portal with KYC done, and must verify within the timeline given to it. If your college is not registered, raise it with the principal early, not in the last week.
  • Wrong domicile state selected. A student living permanently outside Mizoram who selects Mizoram will be rejected.

How to check your application and payment status

  1. Log in to your account on scholarships.gov.in with your registered credentials and open the application status screen.
  2. Check whether the status shows verified by institute, this is the step students most often assume has happened when it has not.
  3. If the status is stuck, contact your Institute Nodal Officer first, since institution-level verification is done at your college and not at the Board.
  4. If the institution has verified and the payment has not arrived, contact the Mizoram Scholarship Board, which treats a complaint about non-receipt of scholarship payment as a three-day service standard.

Grievance redressal and contacts

Who cannot apply for this scholarship?

Students who do not belong to a Scheduled Tribe are not eligible, and neither are students whose family income exceeds Rs 2,50,000 a year. Students below Class XI apply under the pre-matric scheme instead.

Do I have to submit a hard copy after applying online?

Yes. Students studying outside Mizoram send the hard copy to the Mizoram Scholarship Board.

When is the scholarship money paid?

The Mizoram Scholarship Board's citizen's charter gives December to March as the payment window, a period of about four months, and notes that it depends on when the sanction is received. Central scheme payments are made through the PFMS Aadhaar bridge, which is why an Aadhaar-seeded account is essential.
