What is the Scholarship Scheme of Sainik School Chhingchhip?

Scholarship Scheme of Sainik School Chhingchhip is the fee-support arrangement under which the Government of Mizoram pays all or part of a cadet's school fee, dietary charge and clothing money at Sainik School Chhingchhip. The school sits in Chhingchhip in Serchhip district and is run under the Ministry of Defence with the Government of Mizoram as the sponsoring state. Its stated purpose is to prepare boys and girls academically, physically and mentally for entry into the National Defence Academy and, through it, officer-level entry into the Armed Forces.

Sainik Schools charge a consolidated fee that includes tuition, boarding and messing. For most families in Mizoram, that fee is the real barrier, not the entrance examination. The state scholarship exists to remove it. According to the scholarship page published by Sainik School Chhingchhip, the entire school fee, dietary charge and clothing money can be met by the Government of Mizoram, with the central share recorded as nil and the parent's share as nil, for cadets in the lowest income band.

Alongside the state scheme, the school administers a separate Ministry of Defence scholarship for children of defence personnel, which is available irrespective of the state the cadet comes from.

Who is eligible for the Sainik School Chhingchhip scholarship?

A cadet qualifies for the full 100 per cent scholarship if:

  • The cadet is admitted to Sainik School Chhingchhip through AISSEE.
  • The cadet belongs to the ST or SC category, as the school's published slab records.
  • The parent's income is up to Rs 50,000 per month.

A cadet qualifies for the 50 per cent scholarship if:

  • The parent's income is between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 per month. The state pays half of the school fee, dietary charge and clothing money, and the parent pays the other half.

A cadet is not eligible for the state scholarship if:

  • The parent's income is above Rs 1 lakh per month. In that band, the parents bear the school fee, dietary charge and clothing money in full.
  • The child has not been admitted through AISSEE. There is no direct admission route to a Sainik School, so there is no scholarship without a selection through the entrance examination and counselling.
  • The child does not meet the medical standards published by the school, in which case admission itself does not happen.
  • The parent will not execute the bond requiring refund of the scholarship if the cadet does not appear for the NDA examination, does not join the academy on selection, or does not complete service in the Armed Forces.

For the separate defence scholarship, eligibility runs on rank rather than income: children of NCOs and other ranks get the full scale of Rs 32,000, and children of JCOs the half scale of Rs 16,000. That scholarship additionally requires a minimum 50 per cent aggregate and 40 per cent in each subject in the entrance examination or the preceding annual examination.

How much is the scholarship worth?

Slab Parent's monthly income (ST/SC) Parent's monthly income (General) Items covered State share Central share on school fee Parent's share
Category I; Full Up to Rs 50,000 Up to Rs 25,000 School fee, dietary charge, clothing money 100% Rs 2,000 Nil
Category II to 50% Rs 50,000 to Rs 1,00,000 Rs 25,000 to Rs 50,000 School fee, dietary charge, clothing money 50% Rs 1,000 50%
Category III — None Above Rs 1,00,000 Above Rs 50,000 School fee, dietary charge, clothing money Nil Nil 100%

The general-category income bands are half the ST and SC bands at every level, so a general-category cadet needs a parental income of Rs 25,000 a month or less to reach the full slab.

The Ministry of Defence defence scholarship sits on top of this and is paid at Rs 32,000 (full scale) for children of NCOs and other ranks and Rs 16,000 (half scale) for children of JCOs.

Because the state scholarship is expressed as a percentage of the actual fee rather than as a fixed rupee amount, the rupee value moves whenever the school revises its fee structure. The current fee structure and the list of items to be brought at admission are published by the school in its downloads section, and that document, rather than any third-party figure, is what a parent should work from.

How to apply for the Sainik School Chhingchhip scholarship

  1. Register for and appear in AISSEE, the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination, for Class VI or Class IX, choosing Sainik School Chhingchhip. The school publishes the current cycle, including AISSEE 2026, on its website.
  2. Clear the merit list and attend the offline counselling conducted by the school for selected candidates.
  3. Complete the medical examination against the medical standards published by the school. Admission is confirmed only after the medical board.
  4. Obtain the income certificate and caste certificate from the competent authority. The income certificate is what places the cadet in the 100 per cent, 50 per cent or no-scholarship band, so it must state the parent's monthly income clearly.
  5. Submit the scholarship claim to the school office at admission, with the income certificate, caste certificate, admission documents and, where the parent is serving or retired defence personnel, the service certificate for the separate Ministry of Defence scholarship.
  6. Execute the parent or guardian bond committing to refund the scholarship if the cadet does not appear for the UPSC NDA examination, does not join the academy on selection, or does not complete service in the Armed Forces.
  7. Renew the claim each academic year by submitting a fresh income certificate and the annual progress report, since the income band and, for the defence scholarship, the marks condition are both checked yearly.

There is no separate online scholarship portal for this scheme. The claim is processed by Sainik School Chhingchhip itself, and the Government of Mizoram releases its share to the school.

What documents does the school need?

Document Mandatory Notes
Income certificate of parent or guardian Yes Decides which of the three slabs applies
Caste certificate (ST or SC) Yes The full scholarship slab is stated for the ST and SC category
AISSEE result and admission papers Yes The only route into the school
Medical fitness certificate Yes Against the school's published medical standards
Parent or guardian bond Yes Refund undertaking tied to NDA and Armed Forces service
Latest marksheet or progress report No Needed for the defence scholarship marks condition
Service certificate of defence parent No Only for the Ministry of Defence defence scholarship

Why scholarship claims at Sainik School Chhingchhip fail

  • The income certificate is stale or vague. The slabs are drawn at Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 per month, so a certificate that does not state a clear monthly income cannot be banded.
  • The declared income crosses a slab boundary at renewal, moving a cadet from the full slab to the half slab, or from the half slab to no scholarship.
  • The caste certificate is missing where the full slab is claimed.
  • The bond is not executed by the parent or guardian.
  • The marks condition is not met for the defence scholarship: below 50 per cent aggregate or below 40 per cent in any subject.
  • The renewal is not filed for a fresh academic year. The scholarship is not a one-time award; the claim is checked each year.

The fix in each case runs through the school's administrative office, which holds the scholarship file for every cadet.

Where do I get help?

  • Sainik School Chhingchhip website: https://sschhingchhip.mizoram.gov.in/, which carries the scholarship page, the AISSEE 2026 page, the medical standard page, and the downloads section with the fee structure and the list of items to be brought at admission.
  • The school's administrative officer, whose contact details are published in the staff directory on the school website, handles admission and scholarship queries.
  • The Vice Principal's office; Lt Col Kartik Sood is listed as Vice Principal on the school website.

A note on what could not be verified: the school publishes the scholarship slabs and the defence scholarship rates, but it does not publish a separate scholarship application form, a claim deadline or a departmental helpline number. Those are handled at admission by the school office, and this guide deliberately does not invent them.

Frequently asked questions

How much scholarship does a cadet get at Sainik School Chhingchhip?

A cadet whose parent earns up to Rs 50,000 a month in the ST or SC category gets a 100 per cent scholarship covering school fee, dietary charge and clothing money, with the state government paying the whole amount and the parent paying nothing. Where the parent's income is between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,00,000 a month, the state pays 50 per cent and the parent pays the other 50 per cent.

Who pays for the Sainik School Chhingchhip scholarship?

The Government of Mizoram pays it. The school's published table shows the state government share as 100 per cent for the full scholarship slab and 50 per cent for the half slab, with the central share recorded as nil for the state scheme.

What if my parents earn more than Rs 1 lakh a month?

No scholarship is given. Above a parental income of Rs 1 lakh per month the parents bear the full school fee, dietary charge and clothing money themselves. The cadet is still admitted on AISSEE merit; only the fee support is withdrawn.

How do I get admission to Sainik School Chhingchhip?

Admission is only through the All India Sainik Schools Entrance Examination (AISSEE), conducted for Class VI and Class IX. Selection is merit-based, followed by offline counselling and a medical examination against the school's published medical standards.

Is there a separate scholarship for children of defence personnel?

Yes. The Ministry of Defence runs a defence scholarship for children of defence personnel irrespective of state — Rs 32,000 on the full scale for children of NCOs and other ranks, and Rs 16,000 on the half scale for children of JCOs. Eligibility requires a minimum 50 per cent aggregate and 40 per cent in each subject in the entrance or preceding annual examination.

What is clothing money, and is it covered?

Clothing money is one of the three heads the scholarship covers, alongside school fee and dietary charge, and the notification lists it separately for new admission and for each subsequent year. On the full slab the State Government pays 100 per cent of it and the parent pays nothing; on the 50 per cent slab the State and the parent pay half each.

What is the bond that parents have to sign?

The parent or guardian executes a bond to refund the entire scholarship if the ward fails to appear for the UPSC NDA examination, does not join the academy when selected, or does not complete service in the Armed Forces. The scholarship is public money spent to produce officers, and the bond is how the school enforces that purpose.
