What is the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board Marriage Assistance scheme?

Marriage Assistance is a welfare benefit of the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board, which functions under the Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department, Government of Tamil Nadu. The board pays Rs 20,000 when a contributing employee marries, or when the employee's son or daughter who has legally attained the age of marriage gets married. The amount is the same whether the person marrying is male or female.

The scheme is not a general public benefit. It is funded from the Labour Welfare Fund, to which employees in covered establishments contribute a small sum each year alongside a matching employer contribution. Marriage assistance is one of the returns on that contribution, which is why the contribution receipt is the document the board scrutinises hardest.

The Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board runs eight scheme heads in all: educational assistance, educational incentive, book allowance, reimbursement of the cost of spectacles, marriage assistance, natural death and funeral assistance, accidental death and funeral assistance, and a residual "other schemes" category. Establishments register and remit contributions through the board's online system at lwmis.lwb.tn.gov.in.

Who is eligible for marriage assistance, and who cannot claim?

You can claim if:

  • You are an employee who has contributed to the Labour Welfare Fund in the relevant year, and you can produce the contribution receipt.
  • Your monthly basic pay plus dearness allowance does not exceed Rs 35,000, as stated on the board's scheme page.
  • You are up to 60 years of age.
  • The claim is for your own marriage, or the marriage of your son or daughter who has legally attained the age of marriage.
  • The marriage is registered and you hold the registration certificate.
  • You apply within three months of the date of marriage.

You cannot claim if:

  • You have not contributed to the Labour Welfare Fund. A worker in an establishment that does not remit to the fund is not eligible, however long they have worked.
  • Your basic pay plus DA exceeds the ceiling.
  • You are above 60 years of age.
  • The marriage was not registered. An invitation and a temple or hall certificate on their own do not satisfy the board.
  • More than three months have passed since the marriage. This is the most common reason a genuine claim is rejected.
  • You have already received marriage assistance from the Social Welfare Department for the same marriage.
  • Another family member has already applied for the same marriage. Where several applications are received, only the first is considered.

Note one live discrepancy. The board's own scheme page states the salary ceiling as Rs 35,000 basic pay plus DA, while several secondary listings still carry an older figure of Rs 25,000. Where the two conflict, the board's page is the authority, but if your salary sits between the two figures, confirm with the board office before you rely on the claim.

Ration card Yes Attested copy; proves the family relationship

Attestation matters here. The board specifically asks for authenticated copies of the Aadhaar and ration cards and an attested marriage registration certificate, so get these signed and stamped by your employer or a gazetted officer before you submit.

How to apply for Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board marriage assistance

  1. Register the marriage with the Registrar of Marriages and obtain the marriage registration certificate. Do this immediately after the wedding, the three-month clock runs from the date of marriage, not from the date of registration.
  2. Download the application form from the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board website at lwb.tn.gov.in, or collect it from the board's office. The board states plainly that applications can be downloaded from its website.
  3. Get your Labour Welfare Fund contribution receipt from your employer's accounts or HR section, along with a salary slip showing the LWF deduction and the previous month's salary slip.
  4. Fill the form completely with the employee's details, the details of the bride and groom, and the bank account into which the assistance should be paid.
  5. Attach the documents — attested marriage registration certificate, the original invitation, attested Aadhaar and ration card copies for all parties, both salary slips, the contribution receipt and two copies of the bank passbook front page.
  6. Have the application countersigned by your employer where the form requires employer certification of your employment and contribution.
  7. Submit the completed application at the Labour Welfare Board office within three months of the marriage and obtain an acknowledgement.
  8. Track the claim with the board office using the acknowledgement, and check your bank account for the credit once the claim is sanctioned.

How to check the status of a claim

The board's online system at lwmis.lwb.tn.gov.in is built primarily for establishment registration and contribution remittance rather than for individual benefit tracking. For a marriage assistance claim the practical route is:

  1. Keep the acknowledgement issued when the application was submitted.
  2. Follow up at the Labour Welfare Board office where the claim was filed.
  3. Ask your employer's HR or accounts section; employers often forward and follow up batches of employee claims.
  4. Watch the bank account given on the form; the credit is the first thing most claimants notice.

Why marriage assistance claims get rejected

  • Applied after three months. The commonest and least fixable reason. Apply the week the marriage is registered.
  • Marriage not registered. Registration is compulsory; a hall or temple certificate alone is insufficient.
  • No Labour Welfare Fund contribution for the relevant year, or a receipt that cannot be produced.
  • Salary above the ceiling when basic pay and DA are added.
  • Duplicate application from another employed family member for the same marriage.
  • Already drawn from the Social Welfare Department for the same marriage.
  • Unattested documents. The board asks for attested copies and returns files that carry plain photocopies.
  • Bank details mismatched with the applicant's name, which stalls the credit even after sanction.

Marriage assistance in Tamil Nadu: do not confuse the schemes

Several Tamil Nadu departments run marriage assistance under similar names, and applicants regularly file at the wrong one:

Scheme Department Amount
Marriage Assistance Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board Rs 20,000
Moovalur Ramamirtham Ammaiyar Ninaivu Marriage Assistance Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Cash plus gold, by education level
Dr Muthulakshmi Reddy Ninaivu Inter-caste Marriage Assistance Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Cash plus gold
Annai Teresa Ninaivu Marriage Assistance for Orphan Girls Social Welfare and Women Empowerment Cash plus gold
Marriage assistance for differently abled persons Welfare of Differently Abled Persons Rs 25,000 or Rs 50,000 plus 8 g gold
Marriage assistance to Welfare Board members Differently Abled Welfare Board Rs 2,000
Marriage assistance to folk artistes Folk Artistes Welfare Board Rs 5,000

The Labour Welfare Board scheme is the one tied to employment and fund contribution. If you are not a contributor, one of the Social Welfare Department schemes is the right door.

Where to raise a grievance

  • The Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board office where the application was filed.
  • The Commissioner of Labour, Chennai, under the Labour Welfare and Skill Development Department.
  • The board's website, lwb.tn.gov.in, which carries the scheme pages and contact route.

No fee is payable to anyone for a marriage assistance claim. The form is a free download from the board's website and no agent can secure a sanction.

Frequently asked questions

How much is the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board marriage assistance?

Rs 20,000, paid once, to a contributing employee or to the employee's son or daughter on marriage. The amount is the same for a male and a female beneficiary.

What is the salary limit for marriage assistance?

The employee's monthly basic pay plus dearness allowance must not exceed Rs 35,000, according to the Tamil Nadu Labour Welfare Board's scheme page. Some listings still quote an older ceiling of Rs 25,000, so confirm the current figure with the board before applying.

No. Where more than one family member is an employee, only one person should apply. If several applications are received for the same marriage, only the first is considered.
