Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award for Girls
Tripura state government scheme
Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award is a merit award of Tripura's Minorities Welfare Department worth Rs 21,000 to Rs 15,000 in cash plus a gold medal valued at Rs 6,000 to given to minority girl students who secure the highest marks in the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations. Applications are made offline through the Directorate of Minority Welfare.
What is the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award for Girls?
Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award is a merit award run by the Department for Welfare of Minorities, Government of Tripura. According to the department's services listing at minoritieswelfare.tripura.gov.in, the award goes to "girls students who secured highest marks in the Madhyamik and H.S examination" and carries a total value of Rs 21,000 to Rs 15,000 in cash plus a gold medal worth Rs 6,000.
The award is named after Begum Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain (1880–1932), the Bengali writer and educationist who founded schools for Muslim girls and campaigned for women's education in undivided Bengal. Tripura's version of the award applies that idea directly: it recognises the girl students of minority communities who come out at the top of the state board examinations. The name is also written Begum Rokeya Gold Medal Award in departmental notices, and both spellings refer to the same benefit.
The Department for Welfare of Minorities works through four arms. The Directorate of Minority Welfare, the Tripura Wakf Board, the Tripura Cooperative Minority Development Corporation Ltd and the State Haj Committee, and it is the Directorate of Minority Welfare that administers the education schemes, including this award. The award is also listed among the schemes onboarded by the department on the Tripura State DBT Portal at dbttripura.gov.in, which is the state's platform for tracking direct benefit transfers scheme by scheme.
Where the award sits among the department's benefits
- Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award: Rs 21,000 (Rs 15,000 cash, Rs 6,000 medal), for highest-scoring minority girl students in Madhyamik and Higher Secondary.
- Chief Minister Meritorious Minority Girls Gold Award: Rs 25,000 (Rs 19,000 cash, Rs 6,000 medal), listed for Muslim girls in the top ten board positions.
- Abul Kalam Azad Merit Award: Rs 2,500 for Madhyamik and Rs 3,500 for Higher Secondary passers scoring 60 per cent or more, open to boys and girls.
- Special Incentive to Minority Girls Students: Rs 500 for Classes VI to VIII and Rs 800 for Class IX on 60 or more marks in the annual examination.
- Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships, subject to an annual family income ceiling of Rs 60,000 as listed on the services page.
A student can very reasonably qualify for more than one of these in the same year, so read the whole list rather than stopping at the first one that fits.
Who is eligible for the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award?
A student can be considered if:
- She is a girl student. The award is exclusively for girls.
- She belongs to one of the notified religious minority communities — in India these are Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains and Parsis (Zoroastrians).
- She has secured the highest marks in the Madhyamik or the Higher Secondary examination, in the sense described by the department. This is a top-rank award, decided by comparative position, not by crossing a fixed percentage.
- Her family is resident in Tripura and she sat the examination through a school in the state.
- She has a bank account seeded with Aadhaar: in her own name if she is of age, or jointly with a parent or guardian if she is a minor, because the cash component is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer.
A student is not eligible if:
- She is not from a notified religious minority community. Students of other communities cannot apply under this head, and should look at the parallel awards of Tripura's OBC Welfare, Scheduled Castes Welfare and Tribal Welfare departments, the OBC department, for example, runs a Gold Medal for students ranking in the top ten of Madhyamik and Higher Secondary.
- The applicant is a boy. Boys from minority communities remain eligible for the Abul Kalam Azad Merit Award and the scholarships.
- She did not reach the top of the merit position for the examination year. A good score that is not the highest does not qualify, though it may qualify for the Abul Kalam Azad Merit Award at 60 per cent or above.
- She is not resident in Tripura.
- She has already received the same award for the same examination. The award is one per student per examination.

How to apply for the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award
- Wait for the notice after the results. The Department for Welfare of Minorities calls for applications once the Tripura Board of Secondary Education publishes the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary results, through departmental notices and the notice board at minoritieswelfare.tripura.gov.in.
- Collect the application form from the Sub-Divisional Welfare Officer for your sub-division, or from the Directorate of Minority Welfare at Agartala.
- Fill in the form with the student's name, examination roll number, marks obtained, community, Aadhaar number and bank account number with IFSC code.
- Attach the documents, original marksheet, community proof, Aadhaar, residence proof and bank passbook copy, and have the form countersigned by the head of the school or institution where that is asked for.
- Submit the file at the welfare office and collect a dated acknowledgement. Keep it safe; every later enquiry depends on that number.
- Attend verification if called. The department verifies the marks claimed against the board result before the selection list is finalised.
- Watch your bank account and the notice board. The Rs 15,000 cash component is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer, and the gold medal is presented at a departmental function whose date is announced separately.
There is no application fee. No agent or middleman can add a name to a merit award list, and no government official will ask for an OTP.
How is the award paid?
Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award has two parts, and they reach the student by two different routes:
- Rs 15,000 in cash, credited by Direct Benefit Transfer to the student's Aadhaar-seeded bank account. Nothing is paid in currency and nothing is paid to a third party.
- A gold medal valued at Rs 6,000, handed over in person at a felicitation function organised by the Department for Welfare of Minorities.
If the name on the bank account does not match the name on Aadhaar, the transfer fails at the bank end and the money is returned to the treasury. That is the single most common reason a selected student reports that no money arrived, and it is fixed at the bank branch, not at the welfare office.
How to check the status of an application
The award does not have a public online status tracker. Three routes work:
- The Sub-Divisional Welfare Officer's office where the form was filed. Quote the acknowledgement number and ask whether the name appears in the approved list.
- The department's notice section at minoritieswelfare.tripura.gov.in, where selection notices and instalment notices are published as PDFs.
- The bank passbook or SMS alerts, once the sanction has been issued.
Why applications get rejected, and how to fix it
- Marks below the top position for the year. This is a comparative award, so a strong but not highest score is redirected, at best, to another award head.
- Community proof missing. Attach the minority community certificate or the prescribed self-declaration; an unsupported claim is set aside.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded. Complete the DBT seeding form at the bank branch and confirm the NPCI mapper shows the account.
- Name mismatch between the marksheet, Aadhaar and the bank passbook. Correct the spelling at the source document first.
- Incomplete file, an unsigned form, a missing countersignature, or a photocopy of the marksheet where the original was required.
- Late submission after the notified window closed. A late file is carried to the next cycle only if the department says so in writing.
Help and grievance redressal
- Tripura CM Helpline: 1905, the state's single-window grievance number, with written grievances accepted at cmhelpline.tripura.gov.in.
- Department for Welfare of Minorities, Government of Tripura, minoritieswelfare.tripura.gov.in. The department's Web Information Manager, Joint Director Md. Habij Uddin, is listed on the site with the number +91-8777410200.
- Sub-Divisional Welfare Officer of your sub-division, who holds the file at first instance.
Quote the application number, sub-division and the examination year in every enquiry. A grievance filed without an application reference takes much longer to trace.

Frequently asked questions
How much is the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award worth?
The Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award is worth Rs 21,000 in total, made up of Rs 15,000 in cash and a gold medal valued at Rs 6,000, according to the services listing of Tripura's Department for Welfare of Minorities. The cash portion is credited to the student's bank account and the medal is handed over at a departmental function.
Who is eligible for the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award?
Girl students of notified religious minority communities in Tripura who secure the highest marks in the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations are eligible. The department's published eligibility line refers to girl students who secured the highest marks in those two board examinations, so this is a top-rank award rather than a percentage-based one.
How is this different from the Chief Minister Meritorious Minority Girls Gold Award?
They are two separate awards of the same department with different values and different eligibility. The Chief Minister Meritorious Minority Girls Gold Award is worth Rs 25,000 — Rs 19,000 in cash plus a gold medal worth Rs 6,000 — and is listed for Muslim girls placed within the top ten positions of the board examinations, while the Begam Rokeya award is worth Rs 21,000 and goes to highest-scoring minority girl students.
Can boys apply for this award?
No, boys are not eligible. The Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award is specifically a girls' merit award. Boys and girls alike from minority communities can, however, apply for the department's Abul Kalam Azad Merit Award, which pays Rs 2,500 to Madhyamik passers and Rs 3,500 to Higher Secondary passers scoring 60 per cent or more.
Is there an income limit for the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award?
No income limit is published for this award. The department applies annual family income ceilings to its scholarships — Rs 60,000 for the Pre-Matric and Post-Matric Scholarships as listed on its services page — but the merit awards for girls are described purely in terms of examination performance and community.
Can I apply online for the Begam Rokeya Gold Medal Award?
No online application route has been notified. Applications are made offline to the Directorate of Minority Welfare or the Sub-Divisional Welfare Officer, and the departmental website is used for notices and selection lists. The award appears on the Tripura State DBT Portal, which is the state's payment and monitoring platform rather than an application portal.
When are applications called for?
Applications are called for after the Tripura Board of Secondary Education publishes the Madhyamik and Higher Secondary results each year, through departmental and sub-divisional notices. No permanent rolling deadline has been announced, so watch the notice board at minoritieswelfare.tripura.gov.in once results are out.
Where do I complain if the award money does not arrive?
Call the Tripura CM Helpline on 1905 or lodge a written grievance at cmhelpline.tripura.gov.in, quoting your application number and sub-division. The Sub-Divisional Welfare Officer who received the file is the first point of contact, and the Directorate of Minority Welfare at Agartala holds the sanction.
