UP Family ID - Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan
Uttar Pradesh state government scheme
UP Family ID - Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan gives every household in Uttar Pradesh a single 12-digit family identity number that links all members to one verified record. Registration is free at familyid.up.gov.in or at a Common Service Centre, needs an Aadhaar-linked mobile for OTP, and families already holding a ration card do not register afresh.
What is the UP Family ID - Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan?
UP Family ID, run under the name Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan ("one family, one identity"), is a Government of Uttar Pradesh initiative that gives every household in the state a single 12-digit family identity number. Every member of the household sits under that one number, verified against Aadhaar, in one state database.
The Family ID is administered through the Planning Department of the Government of Uttar Pradesh and operates on its own portal at familyid.up.gov.in. That portal is the only authorised site, a large number of lookalike domains carry the words "family id" and collect personal data, and the official portal itself carries a warning against them.
Understand what the Family ID is for, because this is the point most readers get wrong. The Family ID pays nothing. It is not a pension, a subsidy or a grant. It is a verification layer. When a state department needs to know how many people are in a household, who the head is, whether a member has already drawn a benefit, or whether a family already receives a pension elsewhere, the Family ID is the record it checks. The practical benefits follow indirectly:
- Less repeated paperwork. Once family composition is verified centrally, an applicant does not have to prove it again for every separate scheme.
- Duplicate benefits are blocked. One family cannot draw the same benefit twice through two members.
- Families outside the ration card net become visible. A household that never needed subsidised food grain previously had no unified state record at all. The Family ID creates one.
- Targeted outreach. The state can identify, for example, families where no member is in employment, and direct skill and employment programmes at them.
Who can register for the UP Family ID, and who is not eligible?
You can register if:
- You are a resident family of Uttar Pradesh.
- An adult member acts as the head of the family and files the registration for the household.
- The head of the family has an Aadhaar number and a mobile number linked to that Aadhaar.
- Each member being added has an Aadhaar number.
The scheme is deliberately universal. There is no income limit, no caste condition, no landholding requirement and no ration card condition. A family that has never received any government benefit is as eligible as one that receives several.
You cannot register, or do not need to, if:
- Your family already holds a ration card. Ration card holding families are not eligible for a fresh registration because they are already covered. The ration card number itself functions as the Family ID. These families log in and download the Family ID rather than applying for one.
- You are not a resident of Uttar Pradesh. Family ID is a state record and does not extend to households outside the state.
- The head of the family has no Aadhaar, since the whole verification chain is Aadhaar-based.
- A member is already recorded in another family's Family ID. A person can belong to only one family record at a time. A newly married woman or a separated adult must first be removed from the earlier family record before being added to a new one, and doing both at once causes rejection.
How to apply for the UP Family ID online
- Open the official portal at familyid.up.gov.in and select the Registration option on the home page. Verify the domain carefully before entering any data.
- Enter the name of the head of the family, the Aadhaar-linked mobile number and the captcha, then request an OTP and enter it to create the login.
- Log in and enter the Aadhaar number of the head of the family. The system verifies it against Aadhaar and pulls the verified name and details, which is why an Aadhaar name that differs from the one you type will stop the process.
- Add each family member with their Aadhaar number. Each member's verification is confirmed by an OTP sent to that member's own Aadhaar-linked mobile number, so keep the family together or on call while completing this step. This is where most online registrations stall.
- Fill in the address and family details and confirm the relationship of each member to the head of the family.
- Upload the supporting documents the form asks for, then review the entire record. Correcting a member's details after submission is considerably harder than getting them right now.
- Submit the application and note the application number shown on screen. This number is what lets you track the file.
- Wait for verification. The application goes to the field level for verification of the family composition and address.
- Download the Family ID after approval, by logging in with the registered mobile number and completing Aadhaar OTP verification.
How to register offline
- Visit a nearby Common Service Centre (CSC) with the Aadhaar cards of all family members.
- Ask the Village Level Entrepreneur to file the Family ID registration. This route is the correct one when a mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar, since biometric verification is available at the centre.
- Collect the acknowledgement carrying the application number before leaving.
- Return to the same centre after approval to collect a print of the Family ID, or download it yourself from the portal.
How do you check the status of a Family ID application?
- Open familyid.up.gov.in and use the track application option with the application number issued at submission.
- Alternatively, log in with the registered mobile number and view the status under the family record.
- Once the status shows approved, the same login lets you download the Family ID and the family passbook listing all members.
If the status has not changed for a long period, the file is usually waiting at the field verification stage. The route to move it is the local block or tehsil office, or the state helpline, rather than a fresh application, filing twice creates a duplicate that must then be resolved before either can be approved.
Why do Family ID applications get rejected?
- A member already appears in another family's record. The single commonest cause. Get the member removed from the earlier record first.
- Aadhaar details do not match, a name spelled differently on Aadhaar and in the application, or a date of birth mismatch.
- Mobile number not linked to Aadhaar, so the OTP for a member never arrives and the record stays incomplete.
- Duplicate registration where the same family applied twice.
- Ration card already exists, which means the family should have downloaded the Family ID rather than registering afresh.
- Address outside Uttar Pradesh or an address that field verification could not confirm.
- Wrong relationship recorded between a member and the head of the family.
Most of these are fixed at the Aadhaar end rather than the Family ID end. Update the Aadhaar record: name, date of birth or mobile number β at an Aadhaar enrolment centre, then return to the Family ID portal, because the portal takes Aadhaar as authoritative and will not override it.
How to update a Family ID after it is issued
Family composition changes, and the record is meant to change with it. Log in on familyid.up.gov.in with the registered mobile number to:
- Add a new member, a newborn, or a spouse joining the household after marriage.
- Remove a member who has moved to another family record or has died.
- Correct details of an existing member, where the underlying Aadhaar has already been corrected.
Each change goes through the same OTP verification and, where relevant, field verification. Keeping the record current matters more than it appears: schemes that check the Family ID will read the family as it stands in the database, not as it stands in reality.
Where do you get help?
- Uttar Pradesh CM Helpline: 1076. The state's general citizen helpline, which handles Family ID queries and grievances.
- Common Service Centres across the state for assisted registration, correction and download.
- Jansunwai (jansunwai.up.nic.in). The state's integrated grievance system, for a written complaint that carries a tracking number and a routed reply.
- Block or tehsil office for applications stuck at field verification.
Two closing cautions. Only familyid.up.gov.in is the authorised portal; several private sites reproduce its look and ask for Aadhaar and mobile details. And no OTP should ever be shared with anyone claiming to help with a Family ID. The OTP is the verification, and giving it away hands over control of the family record.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UP Family ID?
UP Family ID is a unique 12-digit number issued to a household in Uttar Pradesh under the Ek Parivar Ek Pahchan initiative, linking every member of that family to one verified government record used for scheme delivery.
Do ration card holders need to register separately?
No. Families that already hold a ration card are treated as already covered, and the ration card number itself serves as the Family ID. Such families only need to log in on familyid.up.gov.in and download the Family ID rather than filing a fresh registration.
Is there any fee for the Family ID?
No. Registration on familyid.up.gov.in is free. A Common Service Centre may charge a small notified service fee for assisted registration, but no agent may charge for "getting a Family ID issued".
Who can register for a Family ID?
Any resident family of Uttar Pradesh can register, including families that do not hold a ration card. The registration is filed by an adult head of the family on behalf of all members.
Is Aadhaar mandatory for the Family ID?
Yes. Aadhaar is required for the head of the family and for each member being added, and the mobile number linked to Aadhaar is what receives the OTP at every verification step.
What if my mobile number is not linked to Aadhaar?
Online registration will not complete, because every stage depends on an Aadhaar OTP. Get the mobile number updated at an Aadhaar enrolment centre first, or use a Common Service Centre where biometric verification is available.
How do I check my Family ID application status?
Use the track application option on familyid.up.gov.in with the application number issued at submission, or log in with the registered mobile number. Once approved, the Family ID can be downloaded from the same login.
Does the Family ID give money or a direct benefit?
No. The Family ID is not itself a cash benefit. It is an identity and verification record that state departments use to establish who is in a family, so that scheme benefits, scholarships, pensions and employment support reach the right household without repeated document submission.
