What is Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana in Jharkhand?

Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana is a marriage assistance scheme of the Government of Jharkhand, run through the state's social welfare machinery under the Department of Women, Child Development and Social Security. The scheme gives a one-time grant of up to Rs 30,000 to a poor family when a daughter of the household is married, so that the wedding does not push the family into debt.

The scheme is commonly written as Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana and is also referred to locally as the kanya vivah sahayata or CM marriage assistance scheme. Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana is a cash grant, not a loan: no repayment, no interest and no security is involved.

Two policy goals sit behind the money. The first is straightforward income support, a wedding is the single largest one-time expense many below-poverty-line families in Jharkhand ever face, and Rs 30,000 covers a meaningful share of it. The second is legal: because the grant is released only where the bride is 18 or above and the groom 21 or above, and only where the parents sign a declaration that no dowry passed, the scheme works as an incentive against child marriage and against dowry in districts where both remain common.

Who is eligible for Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana?

You can claim the grant if:

  • The family is a permanent resident of Jharkhand, evidenced by a residential certificate from the Circle Officer.
  • The family is below the poverty line or of demonstrably weak economic condition. Published summaries of the scheme state an annual family income ceiling of around Rs 72,000.
  • The bride is 18 years or older on the date of marriage.
  • The groom is 21 years or older on the date of marriage.
  • The marriage is the daughter's first marriage.
  • The family holds an active bank account in the name of the bride or the applicant parent, so the grant can be transferred electronically.

You are not eligible and cannot apply if:

  • The bride is below 18 or the groom is below 21. This is an absolute bar, not a relaxable condition.
  • The marriage is a second marriage or a remarriage of the bride.
  • The family has already drawn the grant for the same daughter.
  • The family is not a permanent resident of Jharkhand.
  • The family income is above the ceiling fixed for the scheme, or the household is otherwise not in the economically weaker category the scheme targets.

A widow who is remarrying should not apply here. Jharkhand runs a separate and much larger incentive, the Vidhwa Punarvivah Protsahan Yojana, for widow remarriage, and the two schemes are not claimed together for the same marriage.

How to apply for Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana

Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana is applied for offline. Follow these steps:

  1. Collect the application form from the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of your block, from the Anganwadi Sevika of your ward, or from the District Social Welfare Office at the district headquarters. The form is also circulated as a downloadable PDF, but the office copy is the safest.
  2. Fill in the bride's details, name, parents' names, date of birth, education, disability status if any — along with the family's caste, religion, nationality and ration or BPL card number, exactly as they appear on the supporting documents.
  3. Sign the declaration printed on the form. Both parents of the bride jointly declare that no dowry was given or taken, that the money will not be misused, and that they consent to the marriage.
  4. Attach self-attested copies of the residential certificate, income certificate, age proofs of the bride and groom, Aadhaar, marriage proof and the bank passbook page showing the account number and IFSC.
  5. Submit the complete set to the CDPO office or the District Social Welfare Officer and obtain a dated receipt or acknowledgement with a file number. Do not leave the office without it.
  6. Wait for field verification. The Anganwadi Sevika or Supervisor visits the household to confirm the marriage, the ages and the economic condition, and forwards a report to the CDPO.
  7. On sanction, the grant is credited to the bank account given on the form. Ask the CDPO office for the sanction letter number and keep it with your records.

How do I check the status of my Kanyadan application?

  1. Note the file or receipt number printed on the acknowledgement given at submission.
  2. Ask the CDPO office of your block for the current stage; received, under field verification, forwarded to the district, sanctioned, or paid.
  3. Once you are told the case is sanctioned, check the bank account passbook or the bank's SMS alerts for the credit.
  4. If the file is stuck at one stage for more than a couple of months, escalate in writing to the District Social Welfare Officer.

Because the scheme is administered on paper at block level, there is no self-service online tracker. Keeping the acknowledgement safe is what makes follow-up possible.

How much is paid and when?

Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana pays up to Rs 30,000 as a single instalment per eligible daughter. The amount is not staggered and is not repayable. Payment follows sanction, and sanction follows field verification, so the practical timeline depends on how quickly the block office completes its report and how quickly the district releases funds under the year's budget allotment.

Families are best served by applying as close to the marriage date as possible, with the marriage registration in hand. A file submitted long after the wedding, with weak proof that the marriage took place, is the version of this application that stalls.

Why Kanyadan Yojana applications get rejected

  • Bride under 18 or groom under 21 on the marriage date, an automatic rejection, and one that also attracts action under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act.
  • No proof that the marriage happened. An invitation card is not evidence; a registered marriage certificate is.
  • Income certificate above the ceiling, or an income certificate that has expired. Most Circle Office income certificates are treated as valid for a limited period, so get a fresh one for the application.
  • Name mismatch between the Aadhaar, the bank account and the application form. The DBT credit fails silently when names do not match.
  • Inactive or non-Aadhaar-seeded bank account, which causes the transfer to bounce back after sanction.
  • Second marriage or duplicate claim for a daughter already assisted.

Most of these are fixable. A rejected file can be resubmitted with the corrected document rather than started from scratch, so ask the CDPO office for the specific reason in writing.

Where to complain if the grant is delayed

  • Block level: the Child Development Project Officer, who holds the file.
  • District level: the District Social Welfare Officer at the district collectorate, and the Deputy Commissioner in a serious case of delay.
  • State level: the Department of Women, Child Development and Social Security at Project Building, Dhurwa, Ranchi 834004, telephone 0651-2400757 or 0651-2223544.
  • Jharkhand CM grievance route: the state's public grievance system accepts written complaints about pending welfare sanctions and routes them back to the district for a time-bound reply.

Applying is free at every stage. If anyone asks for a cut of the Rs 30,000 to "release" the file, that is a demand for a bribe and should be reported to the Deputy Commissioner's office directly.

Documents required

Aadhaar card of the bride and of the applicant parent
Used for identity verification and for seeding the bank account that receives the grant.

Issued by the Circle Officer; establishes that the family is a permanent resident of Jharkhand.
Income certificate
Issued by the Circle Officer. The scheme is meant for families below the poverty line or in a demonstrably weak economic condition.

Frequently asked questions

How much money does Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana give in Jharkhand?

Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana pays a one-time grant of up to Rs 30,000 for the marriage of a daughter from an economically weak family. The money is released after verification and is credited to the bank account of the bride or her parent. It is a grant, not a loan, and nothing has to be repaid.

What is the minimum age to get Kanyadan Yojana assistance?

The bride must be at least 18 years old and the groom at least 21 years old on the date of marriage. These are the legal minimum marriage ages in India, and the scheme was designed partly to discourage child marriage, so an application for an under-age bride is rejected outright.

Where do I submit the Kanyadan Yojana application form in Jharkhand?

Submit the completed form to the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of your block, or to the District Social Welfare Officer at the district headquarters. Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana is an offline scheme — there is no self-service online application portal for it.

Can a second marriage or a remarriage claim Kanyadan Yojana?

No. Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana is limited to a first marriage. A woman who is remarrying is not eligible, and a family cannot claim twice for the same daughter.

What is the income limit for Mukhyamantri Kanyadan Yojana?

Published scheme summaries put the family income ceiling at about Rs 72,000 a year, with priority for below-poverty-line households. Because income ceilings are revised by departmental order from time to time, confirm the figure currently in force with your block CDPO before paying for an income certificate.

Do I need a marriage certificate to claim the Jharkhand marriage grant?

Yes, in practice you do. Officials verify that the marriage actually took place before releasing money, and a registered marriage certificate is the cleanest proof. Registering the marriage at the Registrar's office soon after the wedding avoids the most common delay in this scheme.

Is there any fee or agent charge for Kanyadan Yojana?

No. The application form and its processing are free. No agent or middleman is authorised to charge for "getting the grant sanctioned", and no official will ask for a share of the Rs 30,000.
