What is Meethi Kranti Yojana?

Meethi Kranti Yojana, the name translates as "sweet revolution", is the bee-keeping promotion effort of the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative Department, Government of Jharkhand. The idea is straightforward: supply a farming household with bee boxes, bee colonies and the basic equipment to run them, train the household in managing the colonies, and let honey become a second income alongside the crop.

A note on what this page does not claim. As of the fact-check date, the per-unit cost, the number of boxes in a unit and the subsidy percentage under Meethi Kranti Yojana are not published on any live Government of Jharkhand portal that could be reached and verified. The department's own agriculture pages on jharkhand.gov.in list a small number of scheme documents without publishing these parameters, and the department's departmental subdomains do not currently resolve. This guide therefore describes the scheme accurately and omits the figures rather than repeating numbers from private websites. Ask at your Block Agriculture Office for the current sanctioned rate.

Why bee-keeping fits Jharkhand

Bee-keeping suits the state's conditions better than most farm diversification options, and understanding why helps an applicant make a serious case at the block office:

  • Land is not the constraint. A bee box occupies a few square feet, so landless and marginal households can take up bee-keeping when they cannot take up horticulture or livestock at scale.
  • Forage is available. Jharkhand has large areas under forest, mahua, litchi, mustard and pulses, all of which are bee forage. Blocks with orchards or forest fringe are the natural sites.
  • Capital cost is low and returns start early. A colony can produce a harvestable surplus within a season, unlike an orchard that takes years.
  • Pollination raises crop yield. Bee colonies placed near mustard, pulses, oilseeds and fruit crops improve fruit set, so the benefit is not limited to honey sales.
  • Non-timber forest produce is already a familiar trade. Households that already collect and sell forest produce know the aggregation and trading channels that honey moves through.

The Jharkhand budget for 2024-25 allocated Rs 320 crore to the State Horticulture Development Scheme, according to PRS Legislative Research's analysis, and bee-keeping in the state is generally implemented through the same horticulture and agriculture machinery at district and block level.

Who is eligible for Meethi Kranti Yojana?

You can apply if:

  • You are a resident of Jharkhand and can produce a residence certificate.
  • You are a farmer, self-help group member, farmer producer organisation member or rural youth willing to take up bee-keeping.
  • You have a safe site for the boxes, a corner of a field, an orchard, a homestead yard or a shaded spot away from heavy traffic and disturbance.
  • There is forage within the bees' range; flowering crops, orchards, mahua or forest.
  • You hold an Aadhaar card and an Aadhaar-seeded bank account.
  • You are prepared to attend the training before the unit is handed over. Untrained bee-keepers lose colonies quickly, and blocks generally require the training round.

You are not eligible if:

  • You are not a resident of Jharkhand, since the scheme is funded by the state.
  • You have no safe site for the boxes, which is checked at field verification.
  • You intend to resell the boxes and colonies rather than run them. Distributed units are verified afterwards.
  • Your household already received a bee-keeping unit in a recent year; repeat allotment is normally deferred in favour of new applicants.
  • You cannot attend the training or arrange for a household member to do so.

How to apply for a bee-keeping unit in Jharkhand

  1. Ask your Block Agriculture Officer whether bee-keeping units are being distributed in your block this financial year, how many boxes make up a unit, what the sanctioned subsidy is, and what the beneficiary's own contribution will be. Blocks work against annual targets, so timing matters more than paperwork.
  2. Collect and complete the application form at the block office, stating the site where you will keep the boxes and the forage available near it.
  3. Attach your documents; Aadhaar card, Jharkhand residence certificate, bank passbook and photographs, plus a land record or SHG membership proof if you have one.
  4. Submit the form and take an acknowledgement receipt. Keep the receipt; until the selection list is published it is your only record.
  5. Allow the field verification. A block or horticulture official inspects the proposed apiary site. Have the site cleared and ready to show.
  6. Attend the bee-keeping training arranged by the department or by the Krishi Vigyan Kendra covering your district. Training covers colony management, seasonal feeding, disease and pest control, swarm handling and honey extraction.
  7. Take delivery of the unit on the notified date, pay your own share where a contribution applies, and keep the delivery receipt and any equipment warranty papers.

Applications may also be routed through a farmer producer organisation or a self-help group federation, and group applications are often processed ahead of scattered individual ones because training and monitoring are simpler.

How do I check my application status?

  1. Keep the acknowledgement receipt from the block office.
  2. Check the selection list displayed at the block office and panchayat bhawan after the verification round.
  3. Ask the Block Agriculture Officer — there is no live statewide status portal for this scheme, so the block record is authoritative.
  4. Escalate to the District Agriculture Officer or District Horticulture Officer if the block cannot say whether your application was verified.

Why do bee-keeping applications fail?

  • No verified apiary site, or a site rejected as unsafe at field inspection.
  • Residence certificate missing, so state residence cannot be established.
  • Bank account not seeded with Aadhaar, which blocks any subsidy transfer.
  • Block target exhausted, an eligible application can still be deferred simply because the year's allotment is full. Ask for it to be carried forward.
  • Training not attended, which stops the handover of the unit.
  • Household already covered by an earlier unit.

After you receive the colonies

Colony survival, not colony supply, decides whether a household earns from bee-keeping. Three practical points come up repeatedly in Jharkhand:

  • Summer and dearth-period feeding. Colonies need sugar syrup feeding when forage disappears between flowering seasons. Colonies lost in the lean months are the most common failure.
  • Pest and disease management. Wax moth and mite infestations spread quickly across boxes kept close together, so early inspection matters.
  • Migration to forage. Experienced bee-keepers move boxes to mustard, litchi or forest flowering areas in season, and the extra honey usually justifies the transport cost.

The Krishi Vigyan Kendra in your district is the practical source of technical help after the training ends, and it costs nothing to visit.

Where to raise a grievance

  • Block Agriculture Officer; first stop for application, verification and distribution issues.
  • District Agriculture Officer or District Horticulture Officer, for unresolved block matters and complaints about the quality of colonies or equipment supplied.
  • Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative Department, Government of Jharkhand, Ranchi: phone 0651-2490929 or 0651-2490578, email jhagriculture@gmail.com.

There is no application fee. No official, supplier or agent may charge money to add your name to a beneficiary list or to release a bee-keeping unit already sanctioned to you.

Documents required

Aadhaar card
Identity proof and the basis for seeding a bank account for any subsidy.
Jharkhand residence certificate
The scheme is state-funded and limited to residents of Jharkhand.
Bank passbook
Aadhaar-seeded account in the applicant's own name.
Land record or lagan rasidoptional
Useful to show a site for the apiary, though bee-keeping does not require a large holding and landless applicants are commonly included.
Passport-size photographs
For the application form and the block beneficiary record.
SHG or FPO membership proofoptional
Group applications are often taken up ahead of individual ones.

Frequently asked questions

What is Meethi Kranti Yojana?

Meethi Kranti Yojana — literally "sweet revolution" — is the bee-keeping promotion effort of the Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperative Department, Government of Jharkhand, which supplies subsidised bee boxes, bee colonies and equipment along with training so that farming households can add honey to their income.

How much subsidy does Meethi Kranti give?

The unit cost and subsidy share are not published on a live Government of Jharkhand portal as of 2 August 2026, so this page does not state a figure. Confirm the current rate at your Block Agriculture Office, and treat amounts quoted on private websites as unverified.

Who can take up bee-keeping under the scheme?

Farmers, self-help group members and rural youth resident in Jharkhand can take it up. Bee-keeping needs very little land, so landless and marginal households are commonly included, provided a safe site is available for the boxes.

Do I need farmland to keep bees?

No, a large holding is not needed. What matters is a safe site for the boxes and forage — flowering crops, orchards or forest within the bees' foraging range — which is why blocks with mustard, litchi, mahua or forest cover are the natural locations.

Is there a central scheme for bee-keeping too?

Yes. The National Beekeeping and Honey Mission of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare supports bee-keeping nationally, and state efforts are usually run alongside it through the horticulture mission machinery in the district.

How do I apply?

Apply at your Block Agriculture Office. Blocks invite applications against annual targets rather than running an open year-round window, so ask the Block Agriculture Officer when applications for bee-keeping units open in your block.

Who is not eligible?

A person who is not a resident of Jharkhand is not eligible, and neither is an applicant with no safe site for the boxes or no intention of managing the colonies. Households that already received a bee-keeping unit in a recent year are usually deferred in favour of new applicants.

Where do I sell the honey?

Honey is sold through local traders, producer groups and cooperative channels. Rural producers in Jharkhand often aggregate through self-help group federations and producer companies promoted by the Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society, which get a better rate than farm-gate sale.
