Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship
Jharkhand state government scheme
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship fully funds postgraduate study abroad for Jharkhand students from ST, SC, minority and backward class communities, covering full tuition, living costs of up to about GBP 1,100 a month, return airfare, visa fees and medical insurance. The state has expanded the scheme to around 50 slots a year, applied for online at mgos.jharkhand.gov.in.
What is the Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship?
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship is Jharkhand's fully funded overseas study scholarship, run by the Department of Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, Minority and Backward Class Welfare, Government of Jharkhand. The scheme pays for a Jharkhand student from a Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, minority or other backward community to complete a Master's or MPhil degree abroad, with the state meeting the entire cost.
The scholarship is named after Jaipal Singh Munda, honoured as Marang Gomke or "great leader". The Munda hockey captain who led India to Olympic gold in 1928, studied at Oxford, and later served in the Constituent Assembly. Naming the scheme after him is the point of it: the state is funding tribal and marginalised students to follow the same path he took.
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship has run primarily with participating universities in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. It began with a small annual quota, and the Jharkhand cabinet subsequently approved a doubling of the intake to roughly 50 students a year.
What does the scholarship actually cover?
According to the scheme portal at mgos.jharkhand.gov.in, the award is fully funded and covers:
- The full tuition fee charged by the participating university, paid to the university.
- A monthly living allowance, reported at up to about GBP 1,100 per month, to cover accommodation, food and day-to-day costs.
- Return economy class airfare between India and the country of study.
- Visa fees and the associated immigration health surcharge.
- Medical insurance for the period of the course.
Because the award covers tuition and living costs together, a selected student does not need a parallel education loan. That is a meaningful difference from most Indian overseas scholarships, which fund tuition only and leave the student to raise living expenses.
Who is eligible for the Marang Gomke scholarship?
You can apply if:
- You are a permanent resident of Jharkhand and can produce a residence certificate from the competent authority.
- You belong to a Scheduled Tribe, Scheduled Caste, minority or other backward community as recognised in Jharkhand.
- Your total family income is within the notified ceiling, reported at Rs 12,00,000 a year.
- You are not older than 40 years at the time of application.
- You have an offer or admission to a Master's or MPhil programme at a university on the scheme's participating list.
- You meet the university's own academic and English language requirements.
You are not eligible if:
- You are not domiciled in Jharkhand, however long you have studied in the state.
- You belong to the general category outside the four covered communities.
- Your family income exceeds the notified ceiling.
- You are applying for an undergraduate degree, a diploma or a PhD, the scheme is limited to Master's and MPhil level study.
- You hold an offer only from a university outside the participating list.
- You are over 40 on the application date.
- You have already availed this scholarship for an earlier overseas degree.
The list of participating universities and the exact income and age limits are restated in each cycle's advertisement, and a student should read that advertisement rather than an older summary before committing an application fee to a university.

How to apply for the Marang Gomke Overseas Scholarship
- Watch mgos.jharkhand.gov.in for the cycle advertisement, which typically appears several months before the overseas academic year begins, and read the participating university list in it.
- Apply to the universities on that list directly and secure an offer or admission letter. The scholarship application needs this document, so this step comes first in practice.
- Register on mgos.jharkhand.gov.in with your name, email address and mobile number, and verify the OTP to create your login.
- Complete the online application form, entering personal details, domicile and community details, family income, full academic history, and the course and university you have an offer from.
- Upload scanned documents, residence certificate, caste certificate, income certificate, all marksheets, the offer letter, passport and Aadhaar, in the formats and sizes the portal specifies.
- Submit the application before the cycle deadline and save the acknowledgement and application number.
- Attend the shortlisting and interview stage if you are called. The department shortlists on academic record, the strength of the offer, and the candidate's statement of purpose, and holds an interview before finalising the award list.
- Complete the award formalities if selected: visa processing, bank details for the living allowance, and the undertaking the department requires.
Applying is free. Because the scholarship needs a university offer in hand, students should begin the university application process roughly a year before they intend to travel.
Key dates and cycle timing
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship does not run on a fixed calendar date every year, because the window has to track the overseas admission season. The 2025-26 cycle closed on 15 March 2026. Students planning for a future intake should check mgos.jharkhand.gov.in from about October, and should already be holding university offers by the time the state window opens.
Why applications get rejected
- No university offer attached, or an offer from a university outside the participating list.
- Income certificate above the ceiling, or issued by an authority the department does not accept.
- Residence certificate missing, an Aadhaar card with a Jharkhand address is not a substitute for a permanent residence certificate.
- Course level wrong — applications for bachelor's degrees or PhDs are returned.
- Incomplete academic record, particularly missing intermediate-year marksheets.
- Application submitted after the deadline. The portal closes hard on the stated date.
How selection works
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship is a competitive award, not an entitlement. Meeting every eligibility condition does not by itself produce a scholarship, because the number of slots; around 50 a year after the cabinet expansion, is smaller than the number of eligible applicants. The department screens applications for eligibility, shortlists on academic record and the quality of the offer held, and interviews shortlisted candidates before finalising the list. Slots are distributed across the ST, SC, minority and backward class categories, so a candidate competes largely within their own category rather than against the whole applicant pool.
A practical consequence follows from this. A student should not decline a university place, defer a job, or commit a non-refundable deposit on the assumption that the scholarship will come through. The safe sequence is to hold the university offer, apply for the scholarship, and keep an alternative funding route: such as the Guruji Student Credit Card education loan: open until the award list is published.

How to check your application status
Marang Gomke Jaipal Singh Munda Overseas Scholarship does not have a running year-round tracker like an income-support scheme, because the whole cycle, from the advertisement to the final award list, is compressed into a few months around the admission window. Even so, an applicant has a few real ways to follow where their application stands.
- Log in at mgos.jharkhand.gov.in with the credentials created at registration. The portal's applicant dashboard is the primary place the department posts whether an application has been received, is under document verification, or has moved to shortlisting.
- Keep the application number from the submission acknowledgement. The department's shortlisting and interview call letters are issued against this number, so an applicant who has lost the acknowledgement should first search their registered email and SMS inbox before contacting the office.
- Watch for a shortlist or interview call notice on the portal itself, rather than waiting for a phone call. Because the scheme runs one cycle a year with a fixed small quota, the department circulates shortlist and interview dates as portal notices and, where available, through the email and mobile number given at registration.
- Call the department helpline on 0651-2446282 for a status check the portal does not show, such as whether a submitted document was found unclear or whether the interview schedule has been finalised. Have the application number ready before calling.
- Write to twcom[at]jhr[dot]nic[dot]in for anything that needs a written record, for instance a request to correct a data entry error in the submitted form, since the department is unlikely to make such a correction on a phone call alone.
- Treat "no response yet" as normal during the screening stage. Because every application is checked for eligibility before shortlisting begins, a gap of several weeks between submission and the next communication does not by itself mean an application has been rejected.
There is no independent SMS-based status service for this scheme, and no private agency or consultancy has any access to an applicant's status. Any call or message claiming to confirm a Marang Gomke award outside the department's own portal and helpline should be treated as unreliable.
