Gruha Lakshmi Scheme (Karnataka)
Karnataka state government scheme
Gruha Lakshmi pays Rs 2,000 a month; Rs 24,000 a year, to the woman named as head of the family on a Karnataka Antyodaya, BPL or APL ration card. Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer to her own Aadhaar-linked bank account. Registration is free on Seva Sindhu or at any Grama One or Karnataka One centre.
What is the Gruha Lakshmi scheme?
Gruha Lakshmi is the direct cash guarantee of the Government of Karnataka, run by the Department of Women and Child Development. Gruha Lakshmi pays Rs 2,000 a month: Rs 24,000 a year: to the woman recorded as head of the family on a Karnataka ration card, transferred straight to her own bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer. The scheme is written in Kannada as Gruhalakshmi Yojane, and it is the largest of the state's five guarantee programmes by expenditure.
Gruha Lakshmi rests on one deliberate design decision: the money goes to the woman, in her own account, not into a household account controlled by someone else. According to the Seva Sindhu guarantee portal, the entitlement is stated plainly as "Rs 2,000 to the woman head of the family". Registration has run into well over a crore women since the scheme began in August 2023, and the Karnataka Budget for 2026-27 carries a large dedicated allocation to sustain it.
The scheme is administered through Seva Sindhu, the state's common services platform, with delivery support from the Food Department's ration card database, which is where the "head of the family" record comes from, and from NPCI for the Aadhaar-to-bank mapping that makes DBT work.
Who is eligible for Gruha Lakshmi?
You can register if:
- You are a woman and a permanent resident of Karnataka.
- You are recorded as the head of the family on your household's ration card.
- Your household holds an Antyodaya, BPL or APL ration card. All three categories qualify, which distinguishes Gruha Lakshmi from Anna Bhagya.
- You hold an Aadhaar number matching the name on the ration card.
- You have a bank account in your own name, Aadhaar-seeded and NPCI-mapped.
You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:
- You are an income tax payer, or your husband files an income tax return.
- You or your husband file GST returns.
- You are a government employee. Serving employees of the state or central government are outside the scheme.
- You are not the recorded head of the family on the ration card. A second woman on the same card, a mother-in-law, a daughter, a sister — cannot draw a parallel Rs 2,000.
- Your household holds no Karnataka ration card, in which case the ration card must be obtained first through the Ahara portal.
- You are not a Karnataka resident.
The exclusions are tested against the household, not just the applicant. This is why the registration form asks for the husband's Aadhaar where applicable. The income tax and GST checks are run against both.

How to apply for Gruha Lakshmi online
- Open the Karnataka guarantee schemes portal at sevasindhugs.karnataka.gov.in and select the Gruha Lakshmi service.
- Enter your ration card number. The portal pulls up the household record and confirms whether you are listed as head of the family; if it does not, stop here and correct the ration card first.
- Enter your Aadhaar number and complete OTP authentication on the Aadhaar-linked mobile number.
- Fill in your bank account details, account number, IFSC and branch; using an account held in your own name. Verify the digits against the passbook before submitting.
- Add the husband's Aadhaar where the form asks for it, and answer the income tax and GST declarations truthfully. A false declaration is a ground for recovery later.
- Submit the application and save the acknowledgement or application number shown on screen.
- Wait for verification. Once sanctioned, the first Rs 2,000 arrives by DBT and an SMS confirms the credit.
How to apply for Gruha Lakshmi offline
- Visit a Grama One centre in a rural area, or a Karnataka One, Bangalore One or Bapuji Seva Kendra centre in a city.
- Carry the ration card, your Aadhaar, your husband's Aadhaar where applicable, your bank passbook and the Aadhaar-linked mobile phone.
- Ask the operator to file the Gruha Lakshmi registration on Seva Sindhu and provide the OTP when it arrives on your phone.
- Collect the printed acknowledgement with the application number before leaving the counter.
The state's Janaservaka doorstep delivery service also files Gruha Lakshmi registrations in the areas where it operates.
How do I check my Gruha Lakshmi status?
- Use the application status option on the Seva Sindhu guarantee portal with your application number or Aadhaar number.
- Check the SMS alerts sent to the registered mobile number on each credit.
- Check your bank passbook or account statement for the DBT credit, which appears against a Gruha Lakshmi narration.
- The scheme has also run SMS-based schedule enquiries on the numbers 8147500500 and 8277000555, where the beneficiary sends the 12-digit ration card number to learn the disbursal schedule.
Payments are released district by district, so a delay of a few days relative to a neighbour in another taluk is normal and not by itself a sign of rejection.
Why Gruha Lakshmi payments get stopped
- Bank account not NPCI-mapped to Aadhaar. DBT cannot reach an account that is merely "linked" in the branch's own records; it must be seeded with NPCI. This is the single largest cause of failed credits.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the ration card and the bank record.
- Head of family changed on the ration card, for example after a death or an amendment, which moves the entitlement.
- Exclusion flag raised by income tax or GST records against the applicant or her husband.
- Bank account closed, dormant or frozen. A returned credit shows as a failed transaction rather than a rejection.
- Re-verification pending. Karnataka has been running biometric re-verification of beneficiaries at government service kiosks during 2026 to weed out ineligible and duplicate entries; a payment can pause until that step is completed.
The fix in almost every case starts at the same two places: the bank branch, for Aadhaar seeding and NPCI mapping, and the Grama One or Karnataka One counter, for ration card and application corrections.
Key dates and the 2026 re-verification
Gruha Lakshmi was announced as one of Karnataka's five guarantees in 2023 and the first transfers were released from August 2023. During 2026 the state has been running a re-verification exercise, with biometric confirmation of beneficiaries at government service kiosks, so that the beneficiary list matches the people actually entitled. Reports of a blanket "reapply for everyone" requirement have circulated widely; because the instructions have been revised more than once and applied differently across districts, confirm the current position for your own district on sevasindhugs.karnataka.gov.in or by calling 1902 rather than relying on a forwarded message.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Gruha Lakshmi pay and how often?
Gruha Lakshmi pays Rs 2,000 every month, which is Rs 24,000 over a year, credited by Direct Benefit Transfer to the beneficiary's own Aadhaar-linked bank account. Credits are released monthly in batches by district, so neighbours can receive the same month's instalment on different days.
Who counts as the head of the family for Gruha Lakshmi?
The head of the family is the person recorded as such on the household's Karnataka ration card, and Gruha Lakshmi is payable only where that person is a woman. Only one woman per household is eligible, so a mother and a daughter-in-law on the same card cannot both draw the benefit.
Can APL cardholders get Gruha Lakshmi?
Yes. Unlike Anna Bhagya, Gruha Lakshmi is open to Antyodaya, BPL and APL ration cardholders alike, provided the woman is the recorded head of the family and neither she nor her husband falls into the income tax or GST exclusion.
Who is not eligible for Gruha Lakshmi?
Women who pay income tax, women whose husbands file income tax returns, households where the applicant or her husband files GST returns, and government employees are excluded. Households without a Karnataka ration card, and women not recorded as the head of the family, are also outside the scheme.
Do existing beneficiaries have to reapply?
Karnataka has been running a re-verification of Gruha Lakshmi beneficiaries during 2026, using biometric confirmation at government service kiosks to confirm that recipients are genuine and to remove ineligible entries. Because re-verification rules have changed more than once, confirm the current requirement for your district on sevasindhugs.karnataka.gov.in or by calling 1902 before acting on anything you read elsewhere.
Why has my Gruha Lakshmi payment stopped?
The commonest causes are a bank account that is not NPCI-mapped to Aadhaar, a name mismatch between Aadhaar and the bank record, a change in the head of the family on the ration card, an exclusion flag raised by income tax or GST records, or a pending re-verification. Check the application status on Seva Sindhu before assuming the scheme has stopped.
Can two women in the same house both get Rs 2,000?
No. Gruha Lakshmi is paid once per household, to the woman recorded as head of the family on that ration card. If two families genuinely live separately and hold separate ration cards, each card's woman head is assessed on its own merits.
Is there any fee to register for Gruha Lakshmi?
No. Registration on Seva Sindhu is free and government service centres charge only the notified counter fee for assisted filing. No agent can charge for "getting your name into the list", and no official will ask for your Aadhaar OTP over the phone.
