Widow / Destitute Certificate in Karnataka
Karnataka state government scheme
Widow Certificate in Karnataka is issued by the Revenue Department through the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, or Nadakacheri, at the taluk office, and applied for online at nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in. Nadakacheri delivers 42 online services, each carrying a service charge and a Sakala timeline shown at the payment step. Every application gets a GSC number for tracking and appeal.
Widow Certificate in Karnataka is a Revenue Department document issued through the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, the taluk-level office every Kannadiga calls the Nadakacheri, and it is the paper that turns a husband's death certificate into a status the state's welfare machinery recognises. A widow pension file, a Sandhya Suraksha claim, a hostel seat for a child, a departmental relaxation: each of these asks for proof that the applicant is a widow, and in Karnataka that proof comes from the Tahsildar through the Nadakacheri.
What is the Nadakacheri and why does it issue this certificate?
Nadakacheri is the Revenue Department's citizen-service counter at taluk level, run under the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra project. The Government of Karnataka's own AJSK portal at nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in states that 42 services are delivered online through Atalji Janasnehi Kendras, each listed with a service charge in rupees and a stipulated timeline in Sakala working days. Revenue certificates of every kind: income, caste, residence, family tree, agriculturist, and the status certificates that include the widow certificate; come out of this single counter, digitally signed and verifiable online.
The portal reports the scale of the operation plainly. As of July 2026 it had processed more than 21.8 lakh applications, raised over 4.1 lakh RTC certificates and issued nearly 53,000 mutation records. Nadakacheri is not a side channel; it is how Karnataka's Revenue Department meets the public.
Behind the counter, the Village Accountant verifies the applicant's circumstances in the village or ward, the Revenue Inspector endorses, and the Tahsildar signs. That chain is why a Nadakacheri certificate is accepted across departments without further questions.
Who can and who cannot apply?
A woman resident in Karnataka whose husband has died can apply, at the Nadakacheri of the taluk where she actually lives. The application rests on one document above all others: the registered death certificate of the husband, issued by the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the gram panchayat, town municipal council or city corporation where the death took place.
A woman whose husband's death was never registered cannot apply until that gap is closed. Register the death first. A delayed registration is handled by the same registrar, and beyond a year it needs a magistrate's order. No Village Accountant will endorse widowhood on the strength of a hospital slip or a cremation receipt.
A woman who has remarried cannot claim a widow certificate. The certificate exists to establish current status, and remarriage ends it. Producing an old certificate after remarriage to keep a pension running is a fraud that the Sakala audit trail makes easy to trace, because every issued certificate is verifiable by number at ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/nkcv.
A woman living outside Karnataka cannot get her status certified by a Karnataka Tahsildar. Jurisdiction follows residence — she must approach the revenue authority of the state where she lives.
A woman whose husband is missing rather than dead is on a different track altogether. Presumed death under Section 108 of the Indian Evidence Act needs seven years and a civil court declaration; until that exists, the Revenue Department has nothing to certify.
How to apply for a widow certificate in Karnataka
- Obtain the husband's registered death certificate from the Registrar of Births and Deaths at the gram panchayat, TMC or city corporation for the place of death. Take two or three copies, you will surrender one and need the others for the pension file.
- Gather the supporting set: the applicant's Aadhaar card, a ration card or other residence proof for the taluk, marriage proof if the counter asks for it, and a passport-size photograph.
- Go to nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in and use the online application link, which opens the AJSK public login at ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/nk5_online/Login/Login_Public. Register with your mobile number, pick the certificate service, fill the form and upload scans. Applicants who prefer a counter can instead walk into the Nadakacheri in the taluk office, or a Grama One, Nemmadi or Seva Sindhu centre, where an operator fills the same form.
- Pay the service charge displayed at the payment step. Nadakacheri accepts debit card, credit card and net banking online, and cash against receipt at the counter.
- Collect the acknowledgement carrying the GSC number, the Sakala acknowledgement that records your service and its guaranteed timeline. This slip is your entire leverage if the file stalls.
- Wait for the Village Accountant's verification. Where a field visit is needed, keep the death certificate and ration card ready to show; a household that cannot be found at the stated address is the commonest reason a file goes back.
- Download the digitally signed certificate when the SMS arrives, or collect the print at the Nadakacheri counter.
What does it cost, and who should you pay?
Nadakacheri publishes a page titled "List of Online Services With Charges", and the charge shown there against the service is the whole of what a widow certificate costs in Karnataka. The same amount appears on the payment screen before you confirm, and on the receipt at the counter. There is no separate verification fee, no urgency fee, no photocopy fee beyond what a shop charges.
Middlemen thrive at taluk offices precisely because applicants do not know this. Someone offering to "get the Tahsildar's signature" for a few hundred or a few thousand rupees is selling you nothing that the Rs-denominated service charge does not already buy. Apply yourself on the portal from a phone, or at a Grama One centre where the charge is fixed and receipted.
How do I check the status of my application?
Open nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in and use the Application Status link, which opens ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/NK_Status, then enter the acknowledgement number from your slip. Karnataka also publishes a certificate verification service at ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/nkcv, where any department, bank or college receiving your certificate can confirm it is genuine: useful when an office claims your certificate "looks like a photocopy".
If the Sakala timeline printed on your acknowledgement passes without a decision, the Karnataka Sakala Services Act, 2011, amended in 2014, gives you an appeal as of right. File it online using the GSC number through the Appeal-I link on sakala.kar.nic.in, and escalate to Appeal-II if the first appeal goes unanswered.
Does the certificate need renewal?
Widowhood does not lapse, and Karnataka does not treat the widow certificate as an annual renewal like the income certificate. What ages is the paperwork around it. Pension sanctioning offices ask for a current income certificate, usually of the same financial year, and it is that document you will refresh at the Nadakacheri each time, not the widow certificate. Keep the original safe and use digitally signed downloads for submissions, since the verification page lets any receiving office confirm authenticity from the number alone.
Remarriage ends the certificate's validity in substance even though no expiry date is printed on it.
Why do these applications get rejected in Karnataka?
The first cause is an unregistered or mis-spelled death certificate, where the husband's name on the death record does not match the name on the applicant's ration card or Aadhaar. Karnataka's records are Aadhaar-seeded and a name mismatch stops the file cold; fix the spelling at source before applying.
The second is jurisdiction, applying at the Nadakacheri of the native taluk while actually living in Bengaluru, or the reverse. Apply where you reside and can be verified.
The third is a failed field verification, where the Village Accountant visits and finds nobody at the address given. The fourth is an incomplete upload, typically a death certificate scanned so faintly that the registrar's seal is unreadable.
The fifth is duplication: applying afresh when a certificate already exists in the system under a different mobile number, which the portal flags.
Where do I complain or get help?
Start with the designated officer at the taluk Nadakacheri, quoting your GSC number. If the timeline is breached, file Appeal-I online at sakala.kar.nic.in and then Appeal-II. For anything the taluk office cannot resolve, call the Sakala call centre on 080-4455 4455 or email sakala[at]nic[dot]in; the Sakala office is at Room No. 124, 1st floor, Gate-1, MS Building, Ambedkar Veedhi, Bengaluru 560001. District-level escalation runs through the Deputy Commissioner's office, for Bengaluru Urban, the DC building at Revenue Complex, K.G. Road, Bengaluru 560009.
Use the right door. A portal fault is a helpdesk problem; a pending signature is a Sakala appeal.

Frequently asked questions
Who issues the widow certificate in Karnataka?
The Revenue Department issues it through the Atalji Janasnehi Kendra, known to everyone in Karnataka as the Nadakacheri, located in the taluk office. The Tahsildar is the issuing authority and the Village Accountant does the field verification that precedes signature.
Can I apply for a Karnataka widow certificate online?
Yes — apply at nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in, which routes to the AJSK online application at ajsk.karnataka.gov.in. The Nadakacheri portal carries 42 online services delivered under the Sakala Act, and the same application can be lodged at the Nadakacheri counter, a Grama One centre or a Seva Sindhu centre.
What does the widow certificate cost in Karnataka?
Pay only the service charge printed against the service on the Nadakacheri "List of Online Services With Charges" page and shown at the payment step before you confirm. Nadakacheri charges are small, fixed, and identical whether you apply online or at the counter — anyone quoting hundreds of rupees is an agent, not the government.
How long does it take?
Each Nadakacheri service carries a stipulated Sakala timeline in working days, printed against the service name and on your acknowledgement. Under the Karnataka Sakala Services Act, 2011 and its 2014 amendment, missing that timeline is what gives you the right to appeal.
What is a GSC number and why does it matter?
The GSC number is the Sakala acknowledgement number issued the moment your application is registered, and it is the only thing you need to track status, escalate or file an appeal. Never leave a Nadakacheri counter without it.
How do I check my application status?
Use the Application Status link on nadakacheri.karnataka.gov.in, which opens ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/NK_Status, and enter your acknowledgement number. A certificate already issued can be authenticated at the Nadakacheri certificate verification page at ajsk.karnataka.gov.in/nkcv.
Does the Karnataka widow certificate expire?
Widowhood is a permanent fact and the certificate is not treated as an annual document, unlike the income certificate that usually accompanies it. What goes stale is the income certificate, so expect to refresh that rather than the widow certificate when you renew a pension claim.
What if the Nadakacheri does not act on my application?
File a Sakala appeal online using your GSC number, and call the Sakala call centre on 080-4455 4455 or write to sakala[at]nic[dot]in. The Sakala mechanism runs two appeal levels, Appeal-I and Appeal-II, above the designated officer.
