Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti (Scholarship for Children of Families in Unclean Occupations), Madhya Pradesh
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti pays about Rs 1,850 a year to a day-scholar student in Classes 1 to 10 in Madhya Pradesh whose parents work in unclean or hazardous occupations - Rs 110 a month for 10 months plus an ad-hoc grant of Rs 750. Only two children per family qualify, and the school applies through the Shiksha Portal.
What is Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti?
Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti; literally "unclean occupation scholarship", is a Madhya Pradesh scheme that pays a small annual scholarship to school children whose parents are engaged in unclean or hazardous occupations. The scheme is run by the Scheduled Caste Welfare Department under Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of Madhya Pradesh, and is delivered through the School Education Department's Shiksha Portal at shikshaportal.mp.gov.in.
The distinguishing feature of this scheme is that eligibility turns on what the parent does for a living, not on the family's caste. Manual scavenging, work with tanning and flaying, and sanitation work of the kind historically imposed on the most marginalised households are the occupations the scheme is aimed at. A family may or may not hold a Scheduled Caste certificate; what the school needs is an occupation certificate for the parent.
The money is small. Published summaries of the Madhya Pradesh scheme report Rs 110 per month for 10 months, Rs 1,100 โ plus an ad-hoc grant of Rs 750 for a day scholar, giving roughly Rs 1,850 a year. Two independent summaries of the scheme give the same Rs 1,850 annual figure for students in Classes 1 to 10.
Key features
- Covers Classes 1 to 10, unusually early for a scholarship.
- Eligibility is occupation-based, not caste-based.
- About Rs 1,850 a year for a day scholar, made of a monthly rate and an ad-hoc grant.
- Only two children per family may be sanctioned.
- Applied for through the school on the Shiksha Portal; there is no student login.
- Paid by Direct Benefit Transfer.
Who is eligible for Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti?
A child qualifies when all of these hold:
- A parent is, or was, engaged in an unclean or hazardous occupation, with an occupation certificate from the competent authority to prove it.
- The child is studying in Class 1 to Class 10.
- The child is a native or resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- The child is not already receiving another state scholarship.
- The child has a Samagra ID, is mapped to the school on the Shiksha Portal for the current year, and has completed Samagra e-KYC.
- No more than two children from the same family are claiming.
Children whose parents left an unclean or unhygienic occupation after 1997 remain eligible. This is a deliberate provision: the scheme is meant to carry a family out of a hereditary trap, so leaving the occupation should not cost the children their scholarship.
Who is not eligible and cannot apply:
- Children whose parents are not in a listed unclean or hazardous occupation, however poor the household; poverty alone is not the test here.
- Children in Class 11 and above, who must move to a post-matric scholarship.
- Children already drawing another state scholarship for the same year.
- A third or later child in a family where two children are already sanctioned.
- Children studying outside Madhya Pradesh, or in a school not mapped on the Shiksha Portal.
- Children whose Samagra e-KYC is not complete, since no sanction can be generated without it.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Samagra ID | Yes | Identity key for the Shiksha Portal record |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | For Samagra e-KYC and bank linkage |
| Parent's occupation certificate | Yes | The defining document for this scheme |
| MP residence proof | Yes | Native or resident of Madhya Pradesh |
| School enrolment record | Yes | Maintained by the school |
| Bank passbook copy | Yes | Linked through Samagra e-KYC for DBT |
| No-other-scholarship declaration | Yes | Bars a duplicate state scholarship |
| Caste certificate | No | Helpful, but the scheme rests on occupation |
The occupation certificate is the whole case. Families often arrive at school with a caste certificate instead and are turned away; the two are not interchangeable for this scheme. Where the parent has left the occupation, the certificate should say what the occupation was and in which year it was left.
How to apply for Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti
- Obtain the Samagra ID for the child if the family does not have one, from samagra.gov.in or the local gram panchayat, nagar panchayat or municipality office.
- Get the parent's occupation certificate issued by the competent local authority, recording the unclean or hazardous occupation and, if it has been left, the year it was left.
- Complete Samagra e-KYC on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in: open the e-KYC option on the home page, enter the Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and verify the OTP. This is what links the child's record to a bank account for DBT.
- Submit the documents to the school: occupation certificate, residence proof, bank passbook copy and the declaration that no other state scholarship is being drawn.
- Let the school map the child on the Shiksha Portal for the current academic year under this scheme, with the correct class and scheme code.
- Check the status on the Shiksha Portal using the Samagra ID after the school confirms the entry, and again after a few weeks to confirm sanction and payment.
There is no independent parent-facing application form for this scheme. Families who go searching for one are looking for something that does not exist, and the correct action is to go to the class teacher.
How is the money paid, and when?
Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the account linked to the child through Samagra e-KYC. The Rs 110 monthly component is calculated for 10 months of the academic session rather than 12, and the Rs 750 ad-hoc grant is a separate one-time component within the same year. In practice the amounts arrive as consolidated credits after the sanction is passed, not as ten separate monthly transfers.
Because the sums are small, ordinary savings accounts with minimum-balance rules sometimes swallow them in charges. A basic savings account for the child is the safer arrangement.
How to check the scholarship status
- Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in.
- Select the option to know scholarship status.
- Enter the child's Samagra ID and the academic year, then the captcha.
- Submit and read the list of schemes sanctioned for that child and the payment position against each.
The Shiksha Portal also publishes school-wise enrolment and scholarship sanction status and district-wise e-KYC statistics, which help establish whether an entire school has been missed rather than one child.
Why claims fail under this scheme
- Occupation certificate missing or refused, which is the hardest problem in this scheme because it depends on a local authority's willingness to certify the work.
- A caste certificate submitted in place of an occupation certificate.
- Samagra e-KYC incomplete, the standard blocker across all Shiksha Portal schemes.
- Child not mapped to the school for the current academic year.
- A third child in the family claiming where two are already sanctioned.
- Another state scholarship already drawn for the same year.
- Bank account not linked or dormant, causing the DBT to bounce.
Fix all of these at the school first. Only the school can correct a Shiksha Portal mapping, and only the issuing authority can correct an occupation certificate.
Where to get help
- Class teacher or head master. The first stop, because the school owns the Shiksha Portal entry.
- Samagra helpline: 0755-2558395, for Samagra ID and e-KYC failures.
- Block Education Officer or District Education Officer, where the school does not act.
- District Scheduled Caste Welfare / Social Justice office, for occupation certificate and eligibility disputes, which is the office that can push a reluctant local authority.
- CM Helpline 181, the Madhya Pradesh government's general grievance line.
The scholarship is free to claim. No fee is payable to any official, and the school is required to do the portal work as part of its normal duties.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti pay?
A day-scholar student receives Rs 110 a month for 10 months, that is Rs 1,100, plus an ad-hoc grant of Rs 750, giving about Rs 1,850 a year. Published summaries of the scheme in Madhya Pradesh consistently report the Rs 1,850 annual figure for students in Classes 1 to 10.
Is this scholarship based on caste or on occupation?
It is based on occupation, not caste. Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti is for children whose parents work in unclean or hazardous occupations, which is why a caste certificate is helpful but not the deciding document. The parent's occupation certificate is what the claim rests on.
Which classes does the scheme cover?
Classes 1 to 10 are covered, making this one of the few Madhya Pradesh scholarships that reaches down to the primary years. Students who move into Class 11 must look at the post-matric scholarship schemes on the MP Scholarship Portal instead.
How many children in one family can get it?
Only two children from one family are eligible for the scholarship. A third child in the same household will not be sanctioned even if every other condition is met.
What if my parents have left the unclean occupation?
Children whose parents left unclean or unhygienic occupations after 1997 are still eligible under the scheme's rules. The occupation certificate should record the earlier occupation and the year it was left, so that the school can enter the claim correctly.
Can a child draw this along with another scholarship?
No. A child already receiving another state scholarship is not eligible for Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti. Where two claims are found, one is cancelled, so the family should choose the scheme that pays more and drop the other.
Who fills the application - the parent or the school?
The school does the portal work. Aswachh Dhandha Chhatravritti has no separate student application portal; the class teacher or head master maps the child on the MP Shiksha Portal against the Samagra ID, and the family's job is to complete Samagra e-KYC and hand over the occupation certificate.
How do I check whether the scholarship has been sanctioned?
Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, choose the scholarship status option, enter the child's Samagra ID and the academic year, and submit. The screen lists the schemes sanctioned for that student and the payment position for each.
