Ashram Schools Scheme for Scheduled Tribes (Madhya Pradesh)
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Ashram Schools Scheme for Scheduled Tribes gives ST children in Madhya Pradesh free residential schooling: lodging, bedding and meals, plus a food scholarship of about Rs 1,300 a month for boys and Rs 1,340 for girls. The Tribal Affairs Department runs the ashram shalas, and admission is applied for on the MPTAAS portal.
What is the Ashram Schools Scheme for Scheduled Tribes?
Ashram Schools Scheme for Scheduled Tribes is the residential schooling programme of the Tribal Affairs Department (Janjatiya Karya Vibhag), Government of Madhya Pradesh. An ashram shala is a school where the children also live: free admission, free accommodation, free bedding and free meals, so that a Scheduled Tribe child from a forest village does not drop out simply because the nearest middle or high school is fifteen kilometres away.
The scale of the problem explains the scale of the network. According to the Tribal Affairs Department, Madhya Pradesh has a Scheduled Tribe population of 153.16 lakh at the 2011 Census, which is 21.10 per cent of the state's total population, the largest ST population of any Indian state. A large share of that population lives in blocks where habitations are scattered and daily travel to school is not realistic. Ashram schools and departmental hostels exist to close exactly that gap.
The scheme also has a central lineage. The Government of India's Scheme for Establishment of Ashram Schools in Tribal Sub-Plan Areas funds ashram school construction in states, and Madhya Pradesh's institutions sit within that broader framework while being operated by the state department.
What does a student actually receive?
- Free admission to the ashram school or departmental hostel.
- Free residence. A place in the hostel for the academic year.
- Free bedding and basic material issued by the institution.
- Free meals, with the messing run by the institution.
- A monthly food scholarship, reported at Rs 1,300 per month for boys and Rs 1,340 per month for girls, at all class levels, in the Khargone district statement of the scheme.
Two points worth being precise about. First, the food scholarship rate is set by departmental order and has been revised over the years, so the current rate should be confirmed with the head of the institution rather than assumed from any figure published online. Second, in most departmental ashram shalas the food money is spent by the institution on the mess rather than handed to the child, the student sees it as meals, not as cash.
Ashram schools are separate from the department's Awas Sahayata Yojana (housing assistance), which pays rent to older ST students in higher education who are not in a government hostel: Rs 2,000 a month at divisional headquarters, Rs 1,250 at other district headquarters and Rs 1,000 at block or tehsil headquarters, under a departmental order of 23 December 2016. A student cannot draw both: living in a departmental hostel disqualifies a claim for housing assistance.
Who is eligible for an ashram school seat?
A child can be admitted if:
- The child belongs to a Scheduled Tribe notified in Madhya Pradesh and holds a valid ST caste certificate from the competent revenue authority.
- The child is a resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- The child is entering a class taught at that ashram school and is otherwise eligible for admission to it.
- The child's MPTAAS profile is registered. The department specifically asks all ST students in Class 5 and Class 8 across districts to complete profile registration, because those are the years children move into residential schooling.
Who cannot apply:
- Non-tribal children. Scheduled Caste and OBC students in Madhya Pradesh are served by hostel schemes of the Scheduled Caste Welfare and Backward Classes departments, not by the ashram shala scheme.
- Students already living in another government hostel, since the same child cannot occupy two free residential places.
- Applicants without an ST caste certificate. A caste entry in a school record or a Samagra family record is not a substitute for the certificate.
- Students from outside Madhya Pradesh, as the institutions serve state residents.
What documents are required?

How to apply for admission to a Madhya Pradesh ashram school
- Create the student's profile on the MPTAAS portal — the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Application Software, using the Samagra ID and Aadhaar. This profile is the identity the department uses for every later benefit, so get the name spelling, date of birth and caste category right at this stage.
- Fill the admission application online on MPTAAS for the ashram school or hostel you want, at the start of the academic session.
- Submit the printed application with the prescribed enclosures to the head of the institution. The ST caste certificate, Samagra ID, Aadhaar, previous class mark sheet or transfer certificate, and domicile proof.
- Take a dated acknowledgement from the institution. This is what you quote when following up on the seat.
- Attend verification and report for admission. The head of institution verifies the documents against the MPTAAS record and allots the seat according to the sanctioned seat strength of the institution.
- Collect the bedding and joining material issued free at admission, and confirm with the warden how the food scholarship is being applied for your child.
Admissions run with the academic session, normally opening in June and July. Families in remote blocks should start the MPTAAS profile well before that, because correcting a Samagra or caste certificate mismatch takes longer than the admission window allows.
How to check the application status
Sign in to the MPTAAS portal with the student's profile and open the admission or scholarship status screen. If the portal shows nothing or shows a mismatch, call the toll-free helpdesk on 1800-2333-951 or write to helpdesk.tribal@mp.gov.in with the profile number. At district level, the Assistant Commissioner or District Tribal Welfare Officer holds the seat allotment records for every institution in the district.
Why ashram school admissions and scholarships get rejected
- Caste certificate not attached or issued by the wrong authority, which is the single most common failure.
- Samagra ID mismatch. The child's name or date of birth in Samagra differing from the school record or Aadhaar.
- MPTAAS profile not created, so the online application cannot be linked to a student at all.
- Seats already full at the chosen institution. This is a capacity outcome, not a defect in the application, and is best handled by asking the district office about another institution.
- Duplicate residential benefit, the child is already on the rolls of another government hostel.
- Bank account not seeded with Aadhaar, which stops any cash component even after admission is confirmed.

Frequently asked questions
What does an ashram school give a Scheduled Tribe child in Madhya Pradesh?
Free admission, free lodging, free bedding and free meals, together with a monthly food scholarship reported at about Rs 1,300 for boys and Rs 1,340 for girls. The child lives at the institution and studies there, which is the whole point in villages where the nearest school is too far to walk to daily.
Who runs the ashram schools?
The Tribal Affairs Department of Madhya Pradesh runs them. Scheduled Tribes make up 21.10 per cent of the state's population — 153.16 lakh people at the 2011 Census — and the ashram shala network is the department's main tool for keeping tribal children in school past the primary years.
How does a family apply for admission?
The student applies online on the MPTAAS portal and submits the application with the prescribed enclosures to the head of the ashram school or hostel. The department asks all ST students of Class 5 and Class 8 to complete profile registration on MPTAAS, since those are the transition years into residential schooling.
Can a non-tribal child get admission to an ashram school?
No. Ashram schools under this scheme are for Scheduled Tribe children and a valid ST caste certificate is mandatory. Scheduled Caste and OBC students are served by parallel hostel schemes of their own departments in Madhya Pradesh.
Is there any fee?
No. Admission, residence, bedding and food in a departmental ashram school are free. No head of institution or warden may charge an admission fee, a mess deposit or a "seat" payment from a Scheduled Tribe family.
What is MPTAAS?
MPTAAS is the Madhya Pradesh Tribal Affairs Application Software — the single online system the Tribal Affairs Department uses for student profiles, scholarships, hostel and ashram admission and payments. The toll-free helpdesk is 1800-2333-951.
What if the ashram school in my block has no vacancy?
Seats are limited institution by institution. If the ashram school is full, ask the head of institution for the waiting position in writing and approach the Assistant Commissioner or District Tribal Welfare Officer, who can consider placement in another institution in the district.
