Senior Hostel Scheme for Scheduled Tribe Students
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Senior Hostel Scheme gives Scheduled Tribe students of Madhya Pradesh in Class 9 to Class 12 free hostel accommodation, bedding and a monthly food scholarship of Rs 1,300 for boys and Rs 1,340 for girls. The Tribal Affairs Department has run the scheme since 1 January 1966, and students register through the MPTAAS portal at tribal.mp.gov.in.
What is the Senior Hostel Scheme for Scheduled Tribes?
Senior Hostel Scheme, known locally as the Senior Chhatrawas Yojana, is a residential welfare scheme of the Tribal Affairs Department (Janjatiya Karya Vibhag), Government of Madhya Pradesh. The scheme provides free hostel accommodation and a monthly scholarship for food to Scheduled Tribe students studying in Class 9 to Class 12 in government or recognised schools in the state. The scheme has been running since 1 January 1966.
The reason it exists is geographic. Madhya Pradesh has the largest Scheduled Tribe population of any Indian state, and much of it lives in villages that have a primary or middle school but no high school or higher secondary section. A tribal student who clears Class 8 in a forest village may find the nearest Class 9 is 15 or 20 kilometres away, across terrain that is not walkable twice a day and not served by transport. Without a hostel, that student's education ends at Class 8. The senior hostel puts a bed and a meal next to the school.
According to the rates published by districts of the Madhya Pradesh government, students admitted to departmental hostels and ashrams receive free accommodation and bedding materials along with a monthly scholarship for food expenses, fixed at Rs 1,300 for Scheduled Tribe boys and Rs 1,340 for Scheduled Tribe girls.
Key features
- Benefit is mostly in kind, a hostel seat, bedding, furniture, electricity and water, plus a monthly cash scholarship for food.
- Covers Class 9 to Class 12 specifically. Other classes are served by parallel institutions.
- No hostel rent is charged at any stage.
- Registration runs through the MPTAAS portal at tribal.mp.gov.in.
- Seats are limited to the sanctioned strength of each hostel, so timing matters.
Where the senior hostel sits among the department's residential schemes
The Tribal Affairs Department runs a ladder of residential institutions, and knowing which rung applies saves a wasted application:
- Ashram schools: Scheduled Tribe students of Class 1 to Class 5.
- Junior hostels; Class 6 to Class 8.
- Senior hostels: Class 9 to Class 12, run at district level, block level and as general hostels. This is the scheme described here.
- College hostels; students above Class 12.
- Excellence hostels, a separate category for students preparing for competitive examinations with departmental coaching support.
Where no government hostel seat is available above Class 12, the department runs an Accommodation Assistance Scheme (Awas Sahayata) paying Rs 2,000 a month at the divisional headquarters of Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Jabalpur and Ujjain, Rs 1,250 a month at other district headquarters and Rs 1,000 a month at tehsil or block headquarters.
Who is eligible for a senior hostel seat?
You can apply if:
- You belong to a Scheduled Tribe notified for Madhya Pradesh and hold a valid caste certificate from a competent revenue authority.
- You are a permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- You are studying in Class 9, 10, 11 or 12.
- Your school is a government or recognised institution. District pages state plainly that the scheme is only available for students studying in government or recognised schools.
- You have an Aadhaar-seeded bank account in your own name, so the monthly food scholarship can be credited.
- A seat is available at the hostel within the sanctioned strength.
You cannot apply — or you are not eligible; if:
- You are not a Scheduled Tribe student. Scheduled Caste students apply to the SC Welfare wing's hostels, and backward class and minority students to the hostels of the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department.
- You are below Class 9 or above Class 12. Class 6 to 8 students go to junior hostels, Class 1 to 5 to ashram schools, and post-Class 12 students to college hostels or accommodation assistance.
- Your school is not government or recognised.
- You are not actually enrolled for the current session, or cannot produce a bonafide certificate.
- You have been removed from a departmental hostel earlier on disciplinary grounds.
- You are already drawing accommodation assistance for the same period, the hostel seat and the rent allowance are alternatives, not additions.
No income limit is published as a condition for a senior hostel seat. The qualifying tests are tribe, class, school type and seat availability.

How to apply for a senior hostel seat
- Take admission in Class 9, 10, 11 or 12 at a government or recognised school, and collect the admission slip or bonafide certificate.
- Register or update your MPTAAS beneficiary profile at tribal.mp.gov.in/MPTAAS, entering your Samagra ID, Aadhaar number, Scheduled Tribe caste certificate details and bank account, and complete e-KYC.
- Apply for the hostel, approach the superintendent of the senior hostel near your school, or the Assistant Commissioner, Tribal Affairs at the district headquarters, and submit the application with the documents listed above.
- Attend verification if called. The district office checks the caste certificate, the distance from home and the school enrolment.
- Collect the allotment order and report to the hostel with your guardian. Complete the hostel register formalities including guardian consent and local guardian details.
- Confirm your bank account is Aadhaar-seeded so that the monthly food scholarship of Rs 1,300 or Rs 1,340 is credited without failure.
What the hostel provides
- Free accommodation for the academic year, with electricity and water.
- Bedding materials and furniture supplied by the department.
- A monthly scholarship for food, Rs 1,300 for boys and Rs 1,340 for girls, per the rates published by districts of the Madhya Pradesh government.
- Library facilities and coaching support in hostels where the department has provided them.
The seat is renewed each academic year on continued enrolment and satisfactory conduct. It does not need a fresh full application every session, but the school bonafide certificate for the new session must be submitted.
How to check your application and payment status
- Sign in to your MPTAAS profile at tribal.mp.gov.in/MPTAAS and open the application status screen.
- Ask the hostel superintendent to show the allotment register and your entry in it.
- Check your Aadhaar-seeded bank account for the monthly food scholarship credits.
- Call the MPTAAS helpdesk on 1800-2333-951 with your application number if the portal shows nothing after several weeks.
Common reasons an application fails
- Caste certificate not issued or not verified on MPTAAS. Apply for the Scheduled Tribe certificate through the Lok Seva Kendra before the admission season, not after.
- Seats exhausted at the sanctioned strength. This is a capacity problem, not a defect in the application. Ask for a written waiting list position and check neighbouring hostels.
- School is private and unrecognised, so it falls outside the scheme.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the monthly food scholarship credit fails silently even though the seat is allotted.
- Samagra, Aadhaar and school register carry different spellings or dates of birth. Correct Samagra first, then Aadhaar, then ask the school to re-submit.
- Application filed after allotments are complete for the session.
Key dates
Senior hostel admissions follow the school admission season, which opens after the Class 8, Class 10 and Class 12 results are declared. The department has not published a single statewide last date for hostel admission, so the operative deadline is the one your hostel superintendent or district office announces. Apply as soon as your school admission is confirmed: hostels fill to sanctioned strength and a seat does not open mid-session. For related MPTAAS benefits the department has extended its windows in the past; the last date for post-matric scholarship and accommodation assistance was extended to February 2026 in the current cycle, so it is always worth asking rather than assuming a window has closed.
Where to take a grievance
- Hostel superintendent, for day-to-day facility and food problems.
- Assistant Commissioner, Tribal Affairs, at your district headquarters. The authority for allotment, rejection and scholarship payment issues.
- District Collector's public grievance hearing (Jan Sunwai), held weekly at the collectorate.
- MPTAAS helpdesk: 1800-2333-951, for portal, profile and e-KYC problems.
- CM Helpline 181, the Madhya Pradesh government's general grievance line.
Everything in this scheme is free. No superintendent, clerk or agent may charge a student or family for a hostel seat, for bedding, or for releasing the monthly food scholarship, and any such demand should be reported immediately.
