Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Medhavi Vidyarthiyon ko Puraskar Yojana (scheme 8843) is Madhya Pradesh's cash award for Scheduled Tribe students who rank in the top six of the MP Board Class 10 or Class 12 merit list. It pays Rs 51,000 for first place down to Rs 5,000 or Rs 10,000 for sixth, and replaced the Rani Durgavati and Shankarshah Puraskar.
What is Medhavi Vidyarthiyon ko Puraskar Yojana?
Medhavi Vidyarthiyon ko Puraskar Yojana (Meritorious Students Award Scheme) is a cash award of the Tribal Affairs Department (Janjatiya Karya Vibhag), Government of Madhya Pradesh, for Scheduled Tribe students who reach the top of the MP Board merit list in Class 10 or Class 12. It carries budget scheme number 8843.
The department's scheme record on the CM Helpline portal, last updated on 19 May 2026, says this scheme now runs in place of the Rani Durgavati and Shankarshah Puraskar Yojana, the award started in 2017 under the names of the Gond queen Rani Durgavati and the Gondwana ruler Raja Shankar Shah. The award slabs and the selection method carry on unchanged.
The record classifies it as a state-sponsored, beneficiary-oriented scheme that pays an incentive amount (protsahan rashi) to students in both urban and rural areas. Its stated purpose is to recognise Scheduled Tribe students who achieve distinction on merit in the Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations.
It is not need-based: there is no income limit. And it is not application-driven: the department works from the board's merit list.
How much is the award?
The award is a one-time cash amount that depends on the student's position in the merit list. The CM Helpline record gives these amounts for regular students:
| Merit position | Class 10 | Class 12 |
|---|---|---|
| First | Rs 51,000 | Rs 51,000 |
| Second | Rs 40,000 | Rs 40,000 |
| Third | Rs 30,000 | Rs 30,000 |
| Fourth | Rs 15,000 | Rs 20,000 |
| Fifth | Rs 10,000 | Rs 15,000 |
| Sixth | Rs 5,000 | Rs 10,000 |
One difference to note. The national myScheme listing for the Rani Durgavati and Shankarshah Puraskar gives Rs 10,000 for the sixth position in Class 10, while the department's 2026 CM Helpline record gives Rs 5,000. The amounts for every other position match. If your child is placed sixth in Class 10, ask the district Tribal Affairs office which figure applies.
Who is eligible?
According to the department's scheme record, a student qualifies when all of these hold:
- The student is a native (mool niwasi) of Madhya Pradesh.
- The student belongs to a Scheduled Tribe (the beneficiary class in the record is Scheduled Tribe; both boys and girls are covered).
- The student appeared as a regular student in the Class 10 or Class 12 board examination of the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (Madhyamik Shiksha Mandal).
- The student's result places them in one of the top six merit positions for which the award is paid.
There is no income condition and no application fee.
Who is not eligible?
- Students who are not Scheduled Tribe. Scheduled Caste, OBC and general category toppers are recognised under other departments' schemes, not this one.
- Students who took the examination with CBSE, ICSE or another board, since selection uses the MP Board merit list.
- Private candidates, since the amounts are listed for regular students.
- Students whose position falls outside the top six, however high the percentage.
- Students who are not natives of Madhya Pradesh.
How do students get the award?
There is no form to fill. The process the scheme record describes is:
- The MP Board declares results. The Board of Secondary Education prepares the Class 10 and Class 12 merit lists.
- The department identifies ST toppers. The Tribal Affairs Department uses the merit lists received from the Board to identify Scheduled Tribe students in the award positions.
- Verification. Keep the caste certificate, domicile certificate, marksheet and the student's bank account details ready, because the department or the school may ask for them before payment.
- Award paid. The award is paid at the department's level; the scheme record names the Head of Department as the designated officer and sets no fixed time limit.
- Follow up if delayed. If you believe your child is eligible and has not been contacted, approach the district Tribal Affairs office with the marksheet and certificates.
Why the change of name matters
Families searching for the Rani Durgavati and Shankarshah Puraskar may not find it under that name any longer. The CM Helpline record now lists the scheme under the heading "Rani Durgavati and Shankarshah Puraskar Yojana, in place of which currently Medhavi Vidyarthiyon ko Puraskar Yojana". For a student, the practical effect is nil: the eligibility, the merit-list basis and the amounts are the same. When you write to the department or file a complaint, use the new name and quote scheme 8843.
Where to ask or complain
- District office of the Tribal Affairs Department for questions about selection and payment.
- School principal, who can confirm the student's regular candidature and merit position with the Board.
- CM Helpline 181, the Madhya Pradesh government's grievance line, where the scheme is listed under the Tribal Affairs Department. The scheme record says no appeal process is prescribed.
