What is the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme?

Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme is a scholarship of the School Education Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, for students in Classes 11 and 12 who come from Below Poverty Line families and live in a hostel while studying at a government higher secondary school located at a district or block headquarters.

The scheme addresses a specific gap. Madhya Pradesh has government higher secondary schools mainly at district and block headquarters, so a student from a village who wants to study Class 11 and 12 must live away from home. The family that can least afford the move is exactly the family that is on the BPL list. Sudama Shishyavritti puts money in the student's hands to cover the running cost of that stay.

According to the scheme's published conditions, the annual scholarship is about Rs 5,000 for boys and Rs 5,250 for girls, paid by Direct Benefit Transfer. The slightly higher rate for girls is deliberate, and is used across several Madhya Pradesh school scholarships to push up girls' retention in Classes 11 and 12.

Key features

  • Covers only Classes 11 and 12. The two years after the board exam where drop-out is highest for hostellers.
  • Restricted to government schools at district and block headquarters.
  • Requires a first-division pass in the previous class, so it functions as both a need-based and a merit-based scholarship.
  • No separate student form. The school enters the claim on the MP Education Portal (shikshaportal.mp.gov.in).

Who is eligible for the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme?

A student is eligible if all four conditions are met:

  • Studying in Class 11 or Class 12 in the current session.
  • Enrolled in a government school at a district or block headquarters.
  • The family is on the Below Poverty Line list, evidenced by a BPL card or the BPL flag in the Samagra record.
  • Living in a hostel, certified by the hostel superintendent.
  • Passed the previous class in first division; Class 10 for a Class 11 claim, Class 11 for a Class 12 claim.

A student is not eligible if:

  • The student is a day scholar living at home. The scheme is written for hostellers and a home address defeats the claim.
  • The school is a private school, an aided school or a government school not located at a district or block headquarters.
  • The family is not on the BPL list.
  • The previous class was passed in second or third division, or the student was promoted without a division.
  • The student is in Class 9 or 10, that group is covered by the separate Sudama Pre-Matric Scholarship Scheme, which pays far smaller amounts.
  • The Samagra ID is not mapped to the school, in which case the school physically cannot file the claim.

How much is paid, and how?

Beneficiary Annual scholarship
Boys in Class 11 or 12 About Rs 5,000
Girls in Class 11 or 12 About Rs 5,250

Payment is by Direct Benefit Transfer into the student's own bank account, released after the school's entry is verified and the department sanctions the batch for that session. The amount is annual, not monthly, and is normally paid in one or two tranches rather than every month.

What documents are required?

Document Mandatory Notes
BPL card or certificate Yes The defining condition
Samagra ID Yes The Shiksha Portal works only on Samagra
Aadhaar card Yes For Samagra e-KYC and bank seeding
Previous class marksheet Yes Must show a first division
Hostel residence certificate Yes From the hostel superintendent or warden
School bonafide certificate Yes Confirms government school at district/block HQ
Bank passbook first page Yes Student's own Aadhaar-seeded account

How to apply for the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme

  1. Confirm that your Samagra ID is mapped to your school on the Shiksha Portal, and that Aadhaar e-KYC against it is complete. Get e-KYC done at a Samagra kiosk, MP Online kiosk or Common Service Centre if it is pending.
  2. Open or update a savings bank account in your own name and have it Aadhaar-seeded at the branch. Payment is by DBT and a parent's account will not work.
  3. Collect the hostel residence certificate from your hostel superintendent and the bonafide certificate from the school office.
  4. Submit the BPL card copy, previous class marksheet, hostel certificate, bank passbook copy and Aadhaar copy to the principal of your government school.
  5. Ask the school's Shiksha Portal operator to enter your claim under the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme for the current session and to show you the entry on screen.
  6. Track the status by asking the school to check the sanction and payment position against your Samagra ID on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in a few weeks later.

No student fills a form on any website for this scheme, and no fee is payable at any stage.

How to check the status of your scholarship

  1. Ask the school's Shiksha Portal operator to open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in and search your record by Samagra ID.
  2. Look at the scheme-wise entitlement and sanction screen for the current session, which shows whether the claim was entered, sanctioned and paid.
  3. If the status shows paid but nothing has reached your account, the failure is at the bank end; take your passbook to the branch and confirm Aadhaar seeding and NPCI mapping.
  4. If the claim was never entered, take the documents back to the principal in writing rather than orally, so a date of submission exists.

Why Sudama Shishyavritti claims fail

  • Samagra e-KYC pending, so the student cannot be pushed for DBT.
  • BPL status not reflected in Samagra even though the family holds a card. Get the Samagra family record updated first; the portal reads from it.
  • Bank account in a parent's name, dormant, or not Aadhaar-seeded.
  • Division not recorded on the previous marksheet, or a second-division pass.
  • Hostel certificate missing, which converts the claim into a day-scholar case and disqualifies it.
  • School not at a district or block headquarters, which is a genuine ineligibility and not a fixable error.
  • Name mismatch across Aadhaar, Samagra, the marksheet and the bank record.

How Sudama Shishyavritti fits with other MP school scholarships

Madhya Pradesh runs several small scholarships for Classes 6 to 12 on the same Shiksha Portal, and students frequently confuse them. The distinctions matter because each has a different test and a very different amount.

  • Sudama Pre-Matric Scholarship (Class 9-10), for low-income students in government schools, paying a few hundred rupees a year. Much smaller, and not restricted to hostellers.
  • Swami Vivekananda Post-Matric Scholarship (Class 11-12), a separate Class 11 and 12 scholarship with its own eligibility conditions.
  • State Government Backward Class Scholarship (Class 6-10), a category-based scholarship paying Rs 200 to Rs 400 a year.
  • Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana, the Rs 25,000 laptop incentive paid after the Class 12 result, which sits after Sudama Shishyavritti rather than competing with it.

A student who has just entered Class 11 in a government school at a block headquarters, lives in a hostel, and whose family is on the BPL list should be checking Sudama Shishyavritti first, because at roughly Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,250 a year it is the largest of the school-level scholarships available at that stage.

The practical lesson from how these schemes run is that the school office, not the department, decides whether a student is paid. Every one of these claims is filed by a school employee against a Samagra ID. A student who submits documents verbally in a corridor has no record; a student who submits them with a dated written note to the principal has one, and that note is what a CM Helpline complaint will rest on later.

Where to get help

  • School principal. The person legally responsible for filing the claim.
  • MP Education Portal helpdesk: 0755-2600115 for Shiksha Portal and Samagra mapping problems.
  • Block Education Officer, then the District Education Officer, for a school that does not file the claim.
  • MP CM Helpline: dial 181 to log a written grievance with a tracking number.

Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme is free to claim. No school staff member, agent or kiosk operator may charge a fee to enter the claim or to "get the scholarship sanctioned".

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme pay?

Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme pays an annual scholarship of about Rs 5,000 to boys and Rs 5,250 to girls in Classes 11 and 12. The money is credited by Direct Benefit Transfer into the student's own bank account after the school files and the department sanctions the claim.

Who is eligible for the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme?

A student studying in Class 11 or 12 in a government school at a district or block headquarters, belonging to a BPL family, living in a hostel, and having passed the previous class in first division is eligible. All four conditions must be met together.

Who cannot apply for the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme?

Day scholars who live at home are not eligible, because the scheme is designed for hostellers. Students of private schools, students whose family is not on the BPL list, students in government schools outside district and block headquarters, and students who passed the previous class in second or third division are also not eligible.

How do I apply for the Sudama Shishyavritti Scheme?

Give your documents to the principal of your government school, the school teacher enters your details on the MP Education Portal at shikshaportal.mp.gov.in. There is no separate online form for students to fill and no fee to pay.

Is Sudama Shishyavritti the same as the Sudama Pre-Matric Scholarship?

No, they are two different scholarships. The Sudama Pre-Matric Scholarship covers Classes 9 and 10 with much smaller annual amounts, while Sudama Shishyavritti covers Classes 11 and 12 hostellers from BPL families at a far higher rate of about Rs 5,000 to Rs 5,250 a year.

Do I have to apply again in Class 12?

Yes, the claim is filed for each academic year and the first-division condition is applied to the class just passed, so the school must enter the claim afresh for Class 12 after the Class 11 result. Continuation is not automatic.

The school entered my details but no money arrived. What should I check?

Check Samagra e-KYC and the bank account first, because the commonest cause is an account that is not in the student's own name or is not Aadhaar-seeded for DBT. Ask the school's Shiksha Portal operator to show the sanction and payment status against your Samagra ID.
