MP Free Laptop Scheme (Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana)
Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
MP Free Laptop Scheme, officially the Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana, pays a one-time Rs 25,000 into the bank account of meritorious MP Board Class 12 students to buy a laptop. In the 2025 round the School Education Department transferred Rs 238.98 crore to 94,234 students who crossed the 75 per cent cut-off. No separate application form is filed.
What is the MP Free Laptop Scheme?
MP Free Laptop Scheme is the popular name for the Pratibhashali Vidyarthi Protsahan Yojana, a School Education Department programme of the Government of Madhya Pradesh that rewards high-scoring Class 12 students of the state board with a one-time Rs 25,000 transfer to buy a laptop.
The name causes a common misunderstanding that is worth clearing up first. The Madhya Pradesh government does not distribute laptops. It transfers cash. The student receives Rs 25,000 in their own bank account and buys whatever machine they choose, from whichever shop or website they choose. There is no approved model list, no vendor tie-up, and no requirement to produce a bill.
The scheme's purpose is to keep meritorious students in education past Class 12. A student going on to a professional or degree course needs a computer, and for a family in a small town in Madhya Pradesh that is often the single largest one-time expense of the first college year.
According to the School Education Department, the 2025 round transferred Rs 238.98 crore to 94,234 students who crossed the merit cut-off. The transfer is made in one go at a state-level event, and the money reaches accounts on the same day or within a few days of it.
How much is paid and what is the cut-off?
- Amount: Rs 25,000, one time, per selected student.
- Mode: Direct bank transfer into the student's own Aadhaar-seeded account.
- Cut-off: The merit threshold is announced fresh by the School Education Department after each MP Board Class 12 result. It has been 75 per cent for the general category in recent rounds, with a relaxed cut-off around 70 per cent used for SC, ST and OBC students in some years.
Because the cut-off is re-notified annually, do not assume last year's figure. A student sitting at 73 per cent should check the current year's notification before concluding they have missed out.
The transfer is separate from, and does not affect, any scholarship the student draws, post-matric scholarships, Gaon Ki Beti, Vikramaditya or the state's merit scholarships all continue independently.
Who is eligible for the MP Free Laptop Scheme?
You are eligible if:
- You appeared in and passed the Class 12 examination of the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education (MPBSE).
- You scored at or above the merit cut-off notified for your category in that year's result.
- You are a permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- You hold a Samagra ID correctly mapped to your school record on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in.
- You have a bank account in your own name, seeded with your own Aadhaar.
You are not eligible and cannot apply if:
- You studied under CBSE, ICSE, NIOS or any board other than MPBSE. Selection is drawn straight from the MPBSE result database, so a non-MPBSE result simply does not exist in the system.
- You scored below the cut-off notified for your category that year.
- You are not a resident of Madhya Pradesh, even if you sat the MP Board exam.
- You have no bank account in your own name. A parent's or guardian's account is not accepted.
- You passed Class 12 in an earlier year. The scheme runs on the current year's result and is not retrospective.
- You are attempting to apply separately by form. There is no form; an "application" filed anywhere is meaningless and any site charging for one is fraudulent.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|

| Aadhaar card | Yes | For Samagra e-KYC and bank seeding |
| Bank passbook first page | Yes | Account in the student's own name, Aadhaar-seeded |
| MP residence proof | Yes | Permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh |
| Caste certificate | Only if claiming a relaxed cut-off | Needed for the reserved-category threshold |
How to apply for the MP Free Laptop Scheme
There is no application form, but there is a preparation sequence, and students who skip it are the ones whose money does not arrive.
- Confirm your Samagra ID is mapped to your school record. Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, use the student search with your Samagra ID or enrolment number, and check that your name, school, class and date of birth are correct. Get errors fixed by your school before the exam result.
- Open a bank account in your own name if you do not have one. Any bank works. A minor's account with a guardian is acceptable so long as the account is in the student's name.
- Seed the account with your Aadhaar. Ask the bank branch for Aadhaar seeding and NPCI mapping, and get written confirmation. This is what allows the direct transfer to reach you.
- Complete Samagra e-KYC so that your Aadhaar and Samagra records match. A name spelt differently in Aadhaar and Samagra stops the transfer.
- Appear in the MP Board Class 12 examination and check your result on mpbse.nic.in when it is declared.
- Check the merit list published on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in after the department notifies the cut-off for the year, and confirm your name and account details on it.
- Watch for the transfer at the state-level distribution event. The credit appears in your account as a DBT entry from the School Education Department.
How do I check whether I am on the laptop list?
- Open shikshaportal.mp.gov.in.
- Go to the student services or scheme benefit section.
- Search using your Samagra ID or your MP Board Class 12 roll number.
- The screen shows whether you appear in the beneficiary list for the year and the status of the payment against your account.
If the portal shows you as eligible but the money has not arrived, the fault is almost always at the bank end, an unseeded Aadhaar or a name mismatch. Take the portal printout to your branch first.
Why do students miss out on the laptop money?
- Samagra ID not mapped, or mapped to a different school. The most common single reason a qualified student is missing from the list.
- Bank account not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT cannot execute even after selection.
- Account in a parent's name. The transfer will not be made to a third-party account.
- Name spelt differently in Aadhaar, Samagra and the bank record.
- Marks below the notified cut-off for the category claimed.
- Category claimed without a caste certificate, where the relaxed cut-off was the basis of inclusion.
- Account closed or dormant between the exam and the transfer, which is common when a student moves city for college.
Every one of these except the marks themselves is fixable, and most are fixable before the result is even declared. That is why the preparation sequence above matters more than anything a student can do afterwards.
What are the key dates?
- Class 12 board examination: February to March each year, conducted by MPBSE.
- Result declaration: usually April or May on mpbse.nic.in.
- Cut-off notification — issued by the School Education Department after the result.
- Distribution event and transfer, a state-level function at which the money is released to all selected students at once.
No dates are guaranteed in advance; the department announces the distribution event each year. Keep checking shikshaportal.mp.gov.in after the result.
Where do I complain?
- School principal, the first authority for a Samagra mapping error or a missing name, since corrections are raised through the school.
- District Education Officer (DEO), for errors the school cannot fix.
- MP Education Portal helpdesk, 0755-2600115, for portal and student-record problems.
- CM Helpline 181. The state grievance line, which gives you a tracked complaint number.
- Your bank branch, for Aadhaar seeding and NPCI mapping, which is the single most common cause of a failed transfer.
The scheme is free from end to end. No school, teacher, cyber café or agent may charge a student for inclusion in the list, and no official process requires you to share an OTP with anybody.

Frequently asked questions
How much money does the MP Free Laptop Scheme give?
MP Free Laptop Scheme pays a one-time Rs 25,000 directly into the student's own bank account. The state does not hand out a physical machine — the student chooses which laptop to buy and where, and no proof of purchase is demanded before the money is released.
What percentage is needed for the MP laptop scheme?
Students must clear the merit cut-off notified by the School Education Department for that year's MP Board Class 12 result, which has been 75 per cent for the general category in recent rounds. A relaxed cut-off around 70 per cent has been used for SC, ST and OBC students in some years, and the exact figure is announced fresh after each result.
Do I have to fill an application form for the laptop scheme?
No. There is no citizen application form. The School Education Department builds the beneficiary list from the MPBSE result data on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in, and the student's only job is to make sure the Samagra ID, Aadhaar seeding and bank account on the portal are correct before the result is declared.
Are CBSE and ICSE students eligible?
No. The scheme is limited to students who appeared in the Madhya Pradesh Board of Secondary Education Class 12 examination, because selection is drawn directly from the MPBSE result database. Students of CBSE, ICSE and other boards are not eligible.
How many students received the laptop money in the last round?
In the 2025 round the School Education Department transferred Rs 238.98 crore to 94,234 Class 12 students, which works out to Rs 25,000 each. The transfer is normally made at a single state-level event addressed by the Chief Minister.
Can the money be credited to a parent's bank account?
No. The Rs 25,000 is credited only to a bank account held in the student's own name and seeded with the student's Aadhaar. Opening a student account well before the result is the single most useful preparation step.
My name is missing from the laptop list — what do I do?
Check your Samagra ID mapping and marks on shikshaportal.mp.gov.in first, then take the printout and your marksheet to your school principal, who raises the correction with the District Education Officer. Most omissions are Samagra mapping errors rather than eligibility failures.
Do I have to show a bill for the laptop I buy?
No bill has to be submitted to receive the money, because the scheme is structured as an incentive transfer rather than a reimbursement. The expectation stated by the School Education Department is that the amount is used to buy a laptop for further study.
