Pension for Journalists' Family (Tamil Nadu)
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Pension for Journalists' Family is a Tamil Nadu scheme that continues a monthly pension to the widow of a deceased journalist pensioner. The state pays retired journalists Rs 12,000 a month, raised from Rs 10,000 in June 2023, and the family pension is fixed at half that rate. Apply to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.
What is the Pension for Journalists' Family?
Pension for Journalists' Family is a welfare measure of the Tamil Development and Information Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, administered by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR). The scheme continues a monthly pension to the wife of a deceased journalist who was drawing the state's journalist pension in his lifetime.
The scheme cannot be understood on its own, because it is the second half of a pair. Tamil Nadu runs a Pension Scheme for Journalists, under which a retired working journalist who has completed 20 years of service in journalism and has no adequate means of support is sanctioned a monthly pension. That pension was raised to Rs 12,000 a month from Rs 10,000, with effect from 14 June 2023. The family pension is set at half that rate; Rs 6,000 a month, and is paid to the pensioner's widow after his death.
That relationship between the two schemes is the single most important thing a family needs to grasp, and it is where most disappointment comes from. The family pension is not a benefit available to the family of any journalist. It is the continuation of an existing sanction. If the deceased journalist had never applied for, or had never been granted, the state journalist pension, there is nothing for the family to continue, and the household's route lies through the Social Welfare Department's destitute widow pension instead.
Journalism is an occupation with very uneven retirement provision. Staff journalists in large newspaper and broadcast organisations may have provident fund and gratuity; the large number of district correspondents, stringers, small-paper sub-editors and freelance contributors who make up much of the working press generally have neither. Tamil Nadu's journalist pension exists precisely for that second group, and the family pension recognises that when such a journalist dies, his widow is usually left with no independent income at all.
Who is eligible for the journalists' family pension?
You can apply if:
- You are the wife of a journalist who was drawing the Tamil Nadu journalist pension at the time of his death.
- You can produce the death certificate of the pensioner and the pension sanction order or payment record under which he was drawing the pension.
- You can establish the relationship, that you were his wife; through a legal heir certificate from the Tahsildar or a marriage certificate.
- You are resident in Tamil Nadu.
- You hold a bank account in your own name for the credit.
You are not eligible if:
- The deceased journalist was never sanctioned the state journalist pension. There is no family pension without an underlying pension.
- You are not the wife of the deceased pensioner. The published scheme describes the benefit as being for the wife of the deceased journalist pensioner; any other claim must be taken to the Directorate for a decision on the facts.
- The journalist is alive. While the pensioner lives, the pension is paid to him at the full rate of Rs 12,000 a month, and no separate family pension runs.
- You are resident outside Tamil Nadu and cannot be verified by a District Information and Public Relations Officer.
How much is paid, and how?
| Item | Position |
|---|---|
| Journalist's own pension | Rs 12,000 a month, raised from Rs 10,000 with effect from 14 June 2023 |
| Family pension to the widow | Rs 6,000 a month |
| Mode | Monthly credit to the beneficiary's own bank account |
| Duration | Continues while the beneficiary lives, subject to periodic life certificate |
| Application | Offline, to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations |
The pension is credited monthly. Like every state monthly pension, it depends on a life certificate being furnished at the interval the Directorate specifies. A lapsed life certificate is the most frequent reason a running pension stops, and it is entirely avoidable.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Death certificate of the pensioner | Yes | From the local body registrar |
| Pension sanction order or payment record | Yes | Proves the underlying pension existed |
| Legal heir certificate or marriage proof | Yes | Establishes that the applicant is the wife |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identity and bank seeding |
| Bank passbook in the applicant's name | Yes | The credit is to the widow's own account |
| Ration card or residence proof | Yes | Residence in Tamil Nadu |
| Photographs | Yes | Usually two |
| Life certificate | No, at application | Required periodically after sanction |
The legal heir certificate is issued by the Tahsildar and can be applied for through an e-Sevai centre. It generally takes a few weeks and requires the death certificate first, so start it immediately rather than waiting for the pension application to be prepared.
How to apply for the journalists' family pension
- Obtain the death certificate of the journalist pensioner from the registrar of births and deaths of the municipality, corporation or panchayat.
- Apply for a legal heir certificate at the Tahsildar's office or through an e-Sevai centre, attaching the death certificate, ration card and the applicant's identity documents.
- Gather the deceased's pension papers — the sanction order under which he was drawing the journalist pension, and the bank statement or pension payment record showing the monthly credits. This is the document set that proves the underlying pension.
- Meet the District Information and Public Relations Officer for your district, report the death, and ask for the family pension application form and the department's current requirements.
- Complete the form and attach the death certificate, the pension order, the legal heir certificate or marriage proof, Aadhaar, the bank passbook, residence proof and photographs.
- Submit the application through the District Information and Public Relations Officer, who forwards it with a report to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Chennai, and collect a dated acknowledgement.
- Open or confirm a bank account in your own name and give the details in the application, since the pension is credited to the widow's own account and not to a joint or a child's account.
- Follow up with the Directorate, quoting the acknowledgement, and furnish the life certificate whenever it falls due after sanction.
How to check the status of the claim
- Quote the acknowledgement number to the District Information and Public Relations Officer, who holds the forwarding record.
- Ask the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Chennai where the file stands, since sanction is at the Directorate rather than the district.
- Check the bank account once sanction is communicated, because the credit arrives without separate intimation in many cases.
- Escalate through the Chief Minister's Special Cell at cmhelpline.tn.gov.in if a properly documented claim has been pending unreasonably long.
Common reasons a claim fails, and how to fix it
- The deceased was not a sanctioned journalist pensioner. This is the fundamental bar. Check the pension papers before building the file; if none exist, apply instead for the state's destitute widow pension through the Social Welfare Department.
- No legal heir certificate. A ration card showing the couple in one household is not a substitute. Apply to the Tahsildar early.
- Bank account not in the applicant's own name. Open one, seeded to Aadhaar, before submitting.
- Name mismatch between the death certificate, the pension order, Aadhaar and the bank record. Spellings of Tamil names transliterate inconsistently; get them aligned at source before applying.
- Delay in applying. The pension to the deceased stops on his death; every month between the death and the sanction is a month with no income.
- Life certificate not furnished after sanction, which stops a pension that was running perfectly well.
Help and grievance redressal
- District Information and Public Relations Officer. The first contact, who forwards the application and knows its status.
- Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Chennai, the sanctioning authority: dipr.tn.gov.in
- Tahsildar or e-Sevai centre, for the legal heir certificate; e-Sevai helpline 1800 425 6000.
- Chief Minister's Special Cell: cmhelpline.tn.gov.in
No fee is payable for this pension. Application forms are free and no intermediary can obtain a sanction; report any demand for money to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations.

Frequently asked questions
Who can claim the journalists' family pension in Tamil Nadu?
The wife of a deceased journalist who was drawing the Tamil Nadu journalist pension. The benefit is a continuation of the deceased's own pension to his widow, not a fresh pension for any journalist's family.
How much is the family pension?
Rs 6,000 a month — half the Rs 12,000 monthly pension paid to a retired journalist under the Tamil Nadu journalist pension scheme, which was raised from Rs 10,000 with effect from 14 June 2023.
Can the family of a journalist who never drew the pension claim this?
No. The family pension attaches to an existing journalist pension. Where the deceased journalist had not been sanctioned the pension in his lifetime, there is no family pension to continue, and the family should look instead at the state's general destitute widow pension.
Where is the application submitted?
To the Directorate of Information and Public Relations in Chennai, normally routed through the District Information and Public Relations Officer of the district where the family lives. There is no online application.
How soon after the death should the claim be filed?
As soon as the death certificate is available. The pension to the deceased stops on death, and the family pension begins from sanction, so a delay in filing is a delay in income for the household.
Is a life certificate needed after sanction?
Yes, periodically. Like every monthly pension, this one requires proof that the beneficiary is alive, and a missed life certificate is the commonest reason a running pension stops.
Does the pension continue to children after the widow?
The published scheme describes the benefit as being for the wife of the deceased journalist pensioner. Any claim by children or other heirs should be taken directly to the Directorate of Information and Public Relations, which decides such cases.
