Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana
Tripura state government scheme
Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana pays Rs 10,000 as one-time funeral assistance to an Antyodaya ration card family in Tripura when a family member dies, so that cremation or burial costs do not push the household into debt. The scheme started on 1 April 2021 and applications are made on plain paper at the local Anganwadi Centre.
What is Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana?
Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana is a bereavement-assistance scheme of the Government of Tripura, run by the Directorate of Social Welfare and Social Education. The scheme pays Rs 10,000 as one-time assistance towards cremation or burial expenses when a member of an Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration card family dies. The scheme came into effect on 1 April 2021.
The purpose is narrow and practical. For an Antyodaya household. The poorest category identified under the public distribution system, a death in the family brings an immediate, unavoidable cash requirement at exactly the moment the household has none. Wood, transport, the crematorium or burial ground, and the minimum ritual expenses have to be met within a day. Families in that position routinely borrow at ruinous rates or sell a possession. Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana exists to cover that immediate cost.
Two design choices reflect that urgency. First, there is no printed form, a plain-paper application is accepted, so a grieving family is not sent looking for stationery. Second, the intake point is the Anganwadi Centre, the one government office that exists in almost every village and ward in Tripura.
Key features
- Rs 10,000, paid once per death.
- Restricted to Antyodaya (AAY) ration card families.
- No age limit on the deceased.
- Plain-paper application at the Anganwadi Centre.
- Certification by the Gaon Pradhan, Ward Member or Village Committee Chairperson.
- In effect since 1 April 2021, with subsequent amendments issued by the Directorate.
Who is eligible for Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana?
You can claim if:
- The deceased was a permanent resident of Tripura.
- The deceased's household holds an Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration card, and the deceased's name appears on it.
- You are the next of kin or the nearest family member of the deceased.
- You can get the application certified by the local authority for your area.
There is deliberately no age condition, no income test beyond the Antyodaya card itself, and no requirement that the deceased was an earning member. A child, an elderly parent, a working adult; all are covered on the same terms.
You are not eligible if:
- The family holds a BPL, priority household or general ration card rather than an Antyodaya card. The Antyodaya requirement is absolute.
- The deceased was not a resident of Tripura, even if the family now lives in the state.
- The deceased's name is not on the Antyodaya card, which breaks the link between the person and the entitled household.
- Another family member has already claimed the Rs 10,000 for the same death. The assistance is one payment per death, not one per claimant.
- You are unrelated to the deceased. A neighbour or a community body that bore the funeral cost cannot claim in place of the family.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Antyodaya (AAY) ration card | Yes | The core eligibility document |
| Aadhaar of the deceased | Yes | Identity of the person who died |
| Aadhaar of the applicant | Yes | Identity of the claimant |
| Mobile number | Yes | For follow-up and payment intimation |
| Recent colour photograph | Yes | Of the applicant |
| Local authority certification | Yes | Gaon Pradhan, Ward Member or VC Chairperson |
| Death certificate | No | Not listed as compulsory but often sought at verification |
| Bank account details | No | Where payment is by transfer |
The document list is short by design. A family that cannot immediately produce a registered death certificate should still lodge the plain-paper application with the local authority's certification and add the certificate later, rather than delay the claim.
How to apply for Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana
- Write a plain-paper application addressed to the concerned authority, stating the name of the deceased, the date of death, the relationship of the applicant to the deceased, the Antyodaya ration card number, the applicant's address and mobile number.
- Get the application certified by the Gaon Pradhan if you live in a rural area, the Ward Member if you live in an urban local body area, or the Village Committee Chairperson if you live in a TTAADC area. This certification is the scheme's substitute for a formal verification process and cannot be skipped.
- Attach photocopies of the Antyodaya ration card, the Aadhaar card of the deceased and the Aadhaar card of the applicant, along with a recent colour photograph of the applicant.
- Submit the application at your local Anganwadi Centre, and ask the Anganwadi worker to record the receipt.
- The Anganwadi worker forwards the application through the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) for processing.
- Collect or receive the Rs 10,000 once the claim is sanctioned, either by transfer to the applicant's bank account or as directed by the CDPO office.
Apply as soon as practicable after the death. The scheme is meant to reimburse an immediate cost, and a long gap between the death and the application makes local verification harder.
How much is paid and how?
Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana pays a flat Rs 10,000 per death. The amount does not change with the district, the age of the deceased, the size of the household or the actual funeral expenditure. It is a fixed one-time payment.
The payment is made to the next of kin who applied. Where a bank transfer is used, the account should be in the applicant's own name, and the name on the passbook should match the name on the Aadhaar card submitted with the application. A mismatch between the two is the most frequent reason a sanctioned payment fails to reach the family.
How to check the status of your claim
- Go back to the Anganwadi Centre where you submitted the application and ask the Anganwadi worker whether the case has been forwarded.
- Follow up at the Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) office of your block with the details of the application, the name of the deceased, the date of death and the Antyodaya card number.
- Check the applicant's bank passbook for the credit once the CDPO confirms sanction.
- Escalate to the Directorate of Social Welfare and Social Education on 0381-2326033 if the case is stuck for an unreasonable period.
Because the scheme uses plain-paper applications, there is no reference number system. Note the date of submission and the name of the Anganwadi worker who received it, that is what identifies your claim later.
Why claims get rejected or delayed
- Household is not an Antyodaya card holder. The single largest reason.
- Deceased's name absent from the Antyodaya card, often because the card was never updated.
- No certification from the Gaon Pradhan, Ward Member or Village Committee Chairperson. An uncertified plain-paper application cannot move forward.
- Duplicate claim — two relatives applying separately for the same death.
- Name mismatch between the applicant's Aadhaar and bank account.
- Very late application, where the death occurred long before the claim and local verification becomes difficult.
- Residence outside Tripura at the time of death.
Where the underlying issue is the ration card itself, a family that should be Antyodaya but is classified otherwise, the correction has to be pursued with the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department, not with the Social Welfare office.
Where to get help
- Anganwadi Centre in your village or ward. The intake point and the place to start.
- Gaon Pradhan, Ward Member or Village Committee Chairperson, the certifying authority.
- Child Development Project Officer (CDPO) of your block, the processing officer.
- Directorate of Social Welfare and Social Education, Government of Tripura, telephone 0381-2326033, website socialwelfare.tripura.gov.in.
Mukhyamantri Antyodaya Shradhanjali Yojana is free to claim. No form fee, no certification fee and no facilitation charge is payable at any stage, and the full Rs 10,000 must reach the family. Any demand for money in the name of this scheme should be reported to the CDPO or the Directorate.
