Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana
Tripura state government scheme
Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana gives final-year students of Tripura's government educational institutions up to Rs 5,000 to buy a smartphone, paid straight into their bank account. Running since 2020-21, it covered 19,796 students in 2023-24 at a cost of Rs 9.49 crore. Students apply on the BMS portal, bms.tripura.gov.in.
What is Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana?
Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana is a student connectivity scheme of the Directorate of Information Technology, Government of Tripura. It gives a final-year student in a government educational institution up to Rs 5,000 to buy a smartphone, credited directly into the student's own bank account. The scheme's name is also written in official releases as Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogajog Yojana, and students searching either spelling are looking for the same scheme.
The reasoning behind it is straightforward. Online classes, digital course material, examination portals and scholarship applications all assume a student has a smartphone. Inaugurating the 2023-24 round at IT Bhavan, Indranagar, Information Technology Minister Pranajit Singha Roy said that many parents cannot afford to buy smartphones for their children, which is why the government provides the assistance.
How it has grown. The scheme has been running since the financial year 2020-21, and the official figures show steady expansion:
| Financial year | Students benefited |
|---|---|
| 2020-21 | 7,274 |
| 2021-22 | 9,579 |
| 2022-23 | 11,892 |
| Total, first three years | 28,745 |
Rs 14.37 crore was spent across those three years. For the academic year 2023-24, the budget originally allocated Rs 6 crore with a target of 12,000 students. The state then decided, on the initiative of Chief Minister Professor (Dr.) Manik Saha, to bring 19,796 final-year students of all government educational institutions under the scheme, which raised the fund requirement to Rs 9.49 crore.
On the Tripura State DBT Portal, Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogajog Yojana is the single scheme listed under the Directorate of Information Technology, among 203 onboarded schemes across 30 departments.
Who is eligible for Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana?
You can apply if:
- You are a final-year student of your current course.
- You study in a government educational institution of Tripura. The 2023-24 round covered final-year students of all government educational institutions in the state.
- You hold a bank account in your own name, seeded with Aadhaar, so the transfer can be made by DBT.
- Your name appears on the final-year list your institution's nodal officer verifies against the portal application.
You cannot apply, or you are not eligible, if:
- You are not in the final year of your course. A first- or second-year student is outside the announced criteria, however genuine the need.
- You study in a private institution. The scheme as announced is limited to government educational institutions.
- You have already received the benefit in an earlier academic year. The assistance is one time; a student who drew Rs 5,000 in an earlier year of a previous course cannot draw it again for the same purpose.
- Your bank account is in a parent's or guardian's name. The credit is a DBT to the student, so the account must be the student's own.
- You are not a student of a Tripura institution at all, the scheme is administered by the Government of Tripura for its own students.
How much is the benefit and how is it paid?
The assistance is a maximum of Rs 5,000 per student, paid once. The Minister's statement at the 2023-24 launch is explicit that the government credits the amount into the bank account of the student, who then buys the handset. There is no distribution of physical phones under this scheme, and no approved list of models.
Two consequences follow, and both matter to students:
- The bank account details you enter are the whole transaction. A wrong IFSC or a dormant account means the credit fails.
- Anyone offering you a "free government smartphone" for a fee is defrauding you. The government gives money, not handsets, and takes no fee.
What documents are required?
| Document | Mandatory | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Student ID or bonafide certificate | Yes | Proves final-year status at a government institution |
| Aadhaar card | Yes | Identification and bank seeding for DBT |
| Bank passbook first page | Yes | Account must be in the student's own name |
| Course enrolment / registration number | Yes | Cross-checked against the institution's final-year list |
| Mobile number | Yes | For OTP verification and status alerts on the BMS portal |
| Residence proof of Tripura | No | Useful to carry; often covered by the institution record |
How to apply for Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana
- Confirm the current window with your institution's nodal officer for the scheme. Each academic year has its own announced last date, for the academic year 2023-24, the Information Technology Minister announced that final-year students could apply by 15 January 2024.
- Open the BMS portal at bms.tripura.gov.in, the Directorate of Information Technology's platform through which the scheme runs, and register or log in with your mobile number.
- Select Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana and fill in the application: name as it appears in your institution record, course, year, enrolment number, institution name, Aadhaar number and bank account details.
- Check the bank details twice. Account number, IFSC and account holder name must match the passbook exactly. This is the single field that causes most failed credits.
- Upload the supporting documents, student ID or bonafide certificate, Aadhaar and the bank passbook first page.
- Submit the application and save the acknowledgement or application reference number.
- Follow up with your institution's nodal officer, who verifies your final-year status against the institution's list before the application moves to the Directorate for sanction. Heads of educational institutions and nodal officers are formally part of this chain — both attended the 2023-24 launch, several by video conference.
- Watch your bank account for the credit of up to Rs 5,000 once the sanction is issued.
How do I check my application status?
- Log in to bms.tripura.gov.in with the mobile number you registered and open your application to see its current stage.
- Ask your institution's nodal officer, who can see whether your name has been verified and forwarded. For a student, this is usually faster than any online enquiry.
- Check the bank passbook once the sanction list for your institution has been released. The credit arrives as a DBT entry, and students who have no SMS alert registered often miss it entirely.
Why applications fail, and how to fix them
- Not in the final year. The most common rejection. Nothing can be done except apply in your final year.
- Bank account in a parent's name. Open an account in your own name, a basic savings account is enough, seed it with Aadhaar and reapply in the next window.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar, bank account and institution records. Fix the Aadhaar record first, then have the institution record corrected.
- Aadhaar not seeded to the bank account, so the DBT bounces. The bank branch does the seeding, not the college.
- Application submitted after the last date. The window is time-bound and closes; late applications are not carried into the next round automatically.
- Institution verification pending. The application sits with the nodal officer until the final-year list is confirmed. Chase the nodal officer, not the Directorate.
Key dates
Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana is an annual, academic-year scheme, not a rolling one. The Directorate of Information Technology announces the round and the last date each academic year:
- Scheme in operation since financial year 2020-21.
- 2023-24 round inaugurated on 15 December 2023 at IT Bhavan, Indranagar, Agartala.
- Last date for the 2023-24 round: 15 January 2024.
- 2023-24 coverage: 19,796 final-year students; fund requirement Rs 9.49 crore.
Because the window is short; roughly a month in the 2023-24 round, a student who waits for a reminder usually misses it. Ask the nodal officer at the start of your final year when the round is expected.
Where do I get help or complain?
- Your institution's nodal officer for the scheme, the first and most effective point of contact for a student.
- Directorate of Information Technology, Government of Tripura, which administers the scheme and the BMS portal at bms.tripura.gov.in.
- Tripura CM Helpline 1905, the state's general grievance line.
- Online Public Grievance portal at grievance.tripura.gov.in for a written complaint with a tracking number.
Applying is free. No institution, agent or shop is authorised to charge a student for filing the application or for "arranging" the Rs 5,000.

Frequently asked questions
How much money does Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana give?
A maximum of Rs 5,000 per student, paid once, to help buy a smartphone. The Information Technology Minister confirmed the Rs 5,000 ceiling when inaugurating the 2023-24 round on 15 December 2023, and said the amount is credited directly to the student's bank account.
Who can apply for Mukhyamantri Yuba Yogayog Yojana?
Final-year students studying in government educational institutions across Tripura can apply. The scheme is aimed at students in their last year of study, on the reasoning that a smartphone is needed for online courses, classes and examinations at that stage.
Where do students apply?
On the BMS portal at bms.tripura.gov.in, the Directorate of Information Technology's own platform. Applications are routed through the nodal officer of the student's institution, who verifies the final-year status.
How many students have benefited so far?
28,745 students benefited in the first three financial years of the scheme, at a cost of Rs 14.37 crore — 7,274 in 2020-21, 9,579 in 2021-22 and 11,892 in 2022-23. For 2023-24 the state decided to cover 19,796 final-year students, raising the fund requirement to Rs 9.49 crore.
Is the money paid in cash or as a phone?
As money, not as a phone. The government credits up to Rs 5,000 into the student's own bank account and the student buys the handset. No department distributes handsets under this scheme, so any offer of a "free government phone" against a fee is a fraud.
What was the last date to apply?
For the academic year 2023-24 the last date was 15 January 2024, announced by the Information Technology Minister at the launch. The window is re-announced each academic year, so check bms.tripura.gov.in and your institution's nodal officer rather than assuming last year's date.
Can a student of a private college apply?
No. The scheme as announced covers final-year students of government educational institutions of the state. Students of private institutions are not eligible under the announced criteria.
Which department runs the scheme?
The Directorate of Information Technology, Government of Tripura, runs it, with the Information Technology Department's Secretary and Additional Directors overseeing implementation and institution nodal officers handling verification on the ground.
