What is the West Bengal OBC Scholarship?

The West Bengal OBC Scholarship is not one scheme but a pair of linked scholarships run by the Backward Classes Welfare Department for Other Backward Classes students:

  • Pre-matric scholarship, for students in the school years up to matriculation, typically classes IX and X.
  • Post-matric scholarship, for students who have passed class X and are studying at class XI and above, including degree, professional and postgraduate courses.

Both are delivered on the state's single scholarship platform, OASIS, at oasis.wb.gov.in. The portal handles SC, ST and OBC pre-matric and post-matric scholarships together, along with a Pre-Matric Component II for children of families in hazardous occupations such as tanning and sanitation work. OASIS reported 7 total schemes, more than 11,300 registered institutions and about 82,680 applications in the early part of the 2026-27 session.

The design logic is straightforward. A pre-matric award is meant to keep a child in school past the point where dropout risk peaks. A post-matric award is meant to neutralise the cost of continuing, which for a college student is dominated not by living costs but by tuition and non-refundable compulsory fees.

Who is eligible for the West Bengal OBC Scholarship?

You can apply if:

  • You belong to the OBC category and hold a valid OBC certificate issued by the competent West Bengal authority.
  • You are a permanent resident of West Bengal and hold state domicile.
  • You are a full-time student at a recognised institution.
  • You are in class IX or X (pre-matric) or class XI and above (post-matric).
  • Your annual family income does not exceed Rs 2.5 lakh.
  • You have passed the previous examination; renewals are assessed on continued academic progress.
  • You hold a bank account in your own name.

You cannot apply, or are not eligible, if:

  • You are below class IX. Younger OBC students are not covered by the pre-matric scholarship, though SC and ST students of classes V to VIII have the separate Sikshashree.
  • Your family income exceeds Rs 2.5 lakh a year.
  • You do not hold a valid OBC certificate from the competent West Bengal authority. A certificate from another state does not carry over.
  • You are not a permanent resident of West Bengal.
  • You are already receiving another scholarship for the same purpose in the same year.
  • You are enrolled part-time, or at an institution not recognised for the scheme.
  • You have failed and are repeating the same year, in which case renewal is ordinarily refused until you clear it.

What does the scholarship actually pay?

The published description of the West Bengal pre-matric and post-matric scholarships lists the following components:

  • Maintenance allowance to cover day-to-day educational expenses, paid as a stipend.
  • Reimbursement of tuition fees and other non-refundable compulsory charges, in full or in part depending on the course.
  • Support for books and study materials.
  • Enhanced allowances for hostellers, who draw a higher maintenance rate than day scholars.
  • Additional assistance for students with disabilities.
  • Everything paid through direct benefit transfer to the student's account.

Rates are course-specific and status-specific. A hosteller in a professional degree course and a day scholar in a general degree course are not on the same figure. OASIS publishes a fees structure document on the portal, and that document, for the running session, is the only reliable source for what your course attracts. This guide deliberately does not quote a single rupee figure for "the OBC scholarship amount", because any such figure is meaningless without the course attached to it.

One further practical point published on OASIS: for SC students the department has followed a phased disbursement, releasing about 40 per cent of eligible amounts first and the remaining 60 per cent subsequently. Students should not assume a first, smaller credit is the whole award.

How to apply for the West Bengal OBC Scholarship

  1. Open oasis.wb.gov.in and go to the Student's Area.
  2. Complete registration: choose Fresh Application if this is your first claim, or Renewal if you held the scholarship last year. Note the user ID and password generated; you will need them for every status check.
  3. Read the session's instructions on the portal about One-Time Registration (OTR) on the National Scholarship Portal. OASIS states OTR is mandatory for ST students applying for pre-matric and post-matric scholarships, and category requirements are announced session by session.
  4. Log in and select your scheme β€” pre-matric for classes IX and X, post-matric for class XI and above; under the OBC category.
  5. Fill the application form with personal details, institution and course details, previous examination marks, hosteller or day-scholar status, family income and bank account details taken directly from the passbook.
  6. Upload the documents, OBC certificate, income certificate, mark sheet, admission receipt, Aadhaar, residence proof and, if applicable, the hostel or disability certificate.
  7. Submit the application and save or print the acknowledgement with the application ID.
  8. Get your institution to verify it. The school or college verifies the claim on OASIS, after which it moves to district-level scrutiny and then to sanction. An unverified application never reaches sanction.

There is no offline sanction route. Students without a device generally file from the institution's computer or a Common Service Centre, but the application lives under the student's own OASIS login.

How do I check my OASIS scholarship status?

  1. Log in at oasis.wb.gov.in with the user ID and password from registration.
  2. Open Application Status in the Student's Area.
  3. Read the stage: submitted, verified by the institution, forwarded to the district, sanctioned, or paid.
  4. Chase the right office for the stage you are stuck at. Institution verification is fixed by your school or college; district scrutiny and sanction by the District Backward Classes Welfare Officer; failed payment by your bank and then the OASIS helpline.

If you have lost your credentials, use the portal's Forgot User ID / Password recovery. Do not create a second registration; duplicates are flagged and rejected.

Why do OBC scholarship applications get rejected?

  • OBC certificate invalid, expired, or issued outside West Bengal.
  • Income certificate above Rs 2.5 lakh, or issued by an authority not competent to issue it.
  • Bank account in a parent's name, joint, dormant or not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT credit fails.
  • Name spelt differently across the Aadhaar card, the institution's records and the bank passbook.
  • Course or institution not recognised for the scheme.
  • Another scholarship already drawn for the same year and purpose.
  • Institution never completed verification on OASIS.
  • Renewal filed after failing the previous year's examination.
  • Illegible uploads that the verifier cannot read.

Almost all of these are curable within the same session if you check status early rather than waiting for the money to arrive.

Where do I complain?

  • OASIS helpline: +91-8420023311
  • OASIS email: bcwoasis@gmail.com
  • Head of your institution, for verification and data-entry corrections
  • District Backward Classes Welfare Officer, for scrutiny, sanction and payment delays
  • Backward Classes Welfare Department, anagrasarkalyan.gov.in, for escalation, and for related services such as the online caste certificate application

Applying is free at every stage. No institution, cyber cafe or agent may charge a fee to file or to "get sanctioned" a West Bengal OBC scholarship, and no official will ask a student for a bank OTP.

What does the West Bengal OBC scholarship pay for?

It pays a maintenance allowance plus reimbursement of tuition fees and other non-refundable compulsory charges, with support for study materials and enhanced provisions for hostellers and for students with disabilities. The exact rate depends on the course and on hosteller or day-scholar status.

Where do I apply for the West Bengal OBC scholarship?

Apply on the OASIS portal at oasis.wb.gov.in, which is the Backward Classes Welfare Department's single window for pre-matric and post-matric scholarships for SC, ST and OBC students in the state.

Is the income limit Rs 2.5 lakh for the West Bengal OBC scholarship?

Yes, the commonly applied ceiling is an annual family income of Rs 2.5 lakh. Because ceilings are revised from time to time, confirm the figure for the running session on oasis.wb.gov.in before applying.

Can I hold two scholarships at the same time?

No. A student cannot draw the West Bengal OBC scholarship along with another scholarship for the same purpose and the same year, and a declaration to that effect is part of the application.

Who cannot apply for the West Bengal OBC scholarship?

The OASIS helpline is +91-8420023311 and the email is bcwoasis@gmail.com. Both are published on oasis.wb.gov.in.

Do OBC applicants need a One-Time Registration on the National Scholarship Portal?

OASIS states that One-Time Registration is mandatory for ST students applying for pre-matric and post-matric scholarships. OBC applicants should read the session's instruction on the portal, because these requirements are set category by category and change between sessions.
