Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna, Haryana
Haryana state government scheme
Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna gives Haryana families a marriage grant of Rs 1,100 to Rs 71,000 when a daughter marries. Scheduled Caste and Tapriwas BPL families get Rs 71,000, widows' and destitute women's daughters get Rs 51,000, and sportswomen get Rs 31,000. Apply only online at saralharyana.gov.in.
What is Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna?
Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna is a Haryana state marriage grant, called a "shagun" in the sense of a customary gift given at a wedding, paid when a daughter of an eligible family marries. The scheme is run by the Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes under the Department of Social Justice, Empowerment, Welfare of SC and BC and Antyodaya, commonly written as the SEWA department. Readers often search for it as Kanyadan Yojana or Mukhyamantri Vivah Shagun Yojana, and both refer to the same programme.
The department describes the purpose as honouring the girl child and ensuring that girls from poor families, daughters of widows and destitute women, sportswomen and orphan girls are able to marry with dignity. In practice the grant is intended to stop families borrowing from moneylenders for a wedding, and to build in an incentive to register the marriage legally.
Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna is unusual among Haryana welfare schemes for having a category-wise table rather than a single amount, and for reaching outside the poverty line entirely: even a family with no economic claim at all receives a token Rs 1,100 and a sweet box if the marriage is registered within 30 days.
How much does Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna pay?
According to the SEWA department scheme page, the amounts are:
| Category | Total shagun | Paid at or before marriage | Paid after marriage registration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scheduled Caste, Vimukt Jati, Tapriwas families below the poverty line | Rs 71,000 | Rs 66,000 | Rs 5,000 |
| Daughter of a widow, divorced or destitute woman | Rs 51,000 | Rs 46,000 | Rs 5,000 |
| Orphan and destitute children | Rs 51,000 | Rs 46,000 | Rs 5,000 |
| Mass marriage | Rs 51,000 | Rs 46,000 | Rs 5,000 |
| Couple where both partners are Divyangjan | Rs 51,000 | , | Rs 51,000 |
| Sportswoman of Haryana, any caste, any income | Rs 31,000 | Rs 31,000 | : |
| BPL family not covered above | Rs 31,000 | Rs 28,000 | Rs 3,000 |
| Couple where one partner is Divyangjan | Rs 31,000 | โ | Rs 31,000 |
| Every other Haryana couple registering within 30 days | Rs 1,100 and a sweet box | ; | Rs 1,100 |
Two features of this table are worth reading carefully. First, the split payment is deliberate. The larger part supports the wedding itself and the smaller balance is released only when the marriage is registered, which is how the state pushes registration rates up. Second, the Divyangjan slabs are paid entirely after the marriage, so a couple with disability certificates should plan their wedding costs without assuming the money arrives first.
The amount is transferred by Direct Benefit Transfer into the bride's own bank account, not to a parent or to the groom.
Who is eligible for Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna?
You can claim the shagun if:
- The family is a resident of Haryana.
- The bride is 18 or above and the groom is 21 or above on the date of marriage.
- The family falls in one of the categories in the table above: Scheduled Caste, Vimukt Jati or Tapriwas below the poverty line; the daughter of a widow, divorced or destitute woman; an orphan or destitute child; a BPL family; a sportswoman of Haryana; or a couple where one or both partners are Divyangjan.
- The verified family income in the Parivar Pehchan Patra is within the ceiling for the slab claimed. The department's own pages have cited Rs 1 lakh a year for the widow and destitute category and Rs 1.80 lakh a year as the general income ceiling read from the Family ID, so confirm the figure that applies to your slab with your District Welfare Officer before applying.
- The application reaches the department within six months of the marriage, along with the marriage registration.
You cannot apply if:
- The family is not a resident of Haryana.
- The bride is under 18 or the groom is under 21. Under-age marriage is an offence and disqualifies the claim entirely.
- More than six months have passed since the date of marriage. The directorate states that no application after six months will be entertained, and there is no condonation route published.
- The verified family income exceeds the ceiling for the category claimed. Such a family may still qualify only for the general Rs 1,100 shagun.
- The shagun has already been drawn for the same daughter's marriage.
- The marriage has not been registered, in which case the balance instalment cannot be released even if the first part was paid.

How to apply for Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna
- Check and correct your Parivar Pehchan Patra first. Open your Family ID record, confirm that the income shown is correct and that all family members are listed. A wrong income figure here will reject the application no matter what documents you attach.
- Register on the Antyodaya SARAL portal at saralharyana.gov.in with your mobile number and email, then log in. Only online applications are accepted under this scheme.
- Search for "Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna" in the list of services and open the application form.
- Fill in the details of the bride, the groom, the date of marriage and the category under which you are claiming, and enter the bride's bank account details for Direct Benefit Transfer.
- Upload the scanned documents listed above, including the marriage registration certificate, then submit the form.
- Note the SARAL reference ID shown on the acknowledgement. This is the only number that lets you track the application later.
- Wait for verification by the District Welfare Officer, who checks the category, income and marriage record before sanctioning the grant.
If you cannot complete the form yourself, take the same documents to an Antyodaya SARAL Kendra, Atal Seva Kendra or Common Service Centre. Staff there fill the identical online form on your behalf. There is no paper application to post.
How do you check your Vivah Shagun application status?
- Open saralharyana.gov.in and select Track Application Status.
- Choose the department and service, then enter your SARAL reference ID.
- The screen shows whether the application is pending with the district office, sanctioned, or returned for correction.
You can also send an SMS-based status query if the portal displays that option for the service, and the Antyodaya SARAL helpline can read out the status if you give the reference ID.
Why do Vivah Shagun applications get rejected?
- Income in the Parivar Pehchan Patra is above the ceiling, or has not been updated after a change in circumstances. Fix the PPP first through the local operator, then reapply.
- Application filed after six months from the date of marriage.
- Marriage registration certificate missing, which blocks the balance instalment even where the first part was released.
- Age proof shows the bride below 18 or the groom below 21.
- Bank account is not in the bride's name or is not Aadhaar-seeded, so the DBT credit fails and bounces back.
- Caste or BPL certificate does not support the slab claimed, for example a Rs 71,000 claim without a Scheduled Caste certificate.
- Name mismatch between Aadhaar, the Family ID and the bank account.
A rejection for a document defect is usually curable. A rejection for the six-month limit is not, so file early rather than waiting for a perfect document set.
Key dates to remember
- 30 days from the marriage: the window to register the marriage and qualify for the general Rs 1,100 shagun and sweet box.
- Six months from the marriage: the outer limit for filing the main application with the marriage registration attached.
- The scheme runs all year. There is no annual application season, but the two limits above are counted from your own wedding date, not from a calendar date.
Where do you get help or file a grievance?
- Antyodaya SARAL helpline: 0172-3968400, 7 am to 8 pm, Monday to Saturday, excluding government holidays.
- Email: saral.haryana@gov.in
- District Welfare Officer, Welfare of SC and BC department, in your district, for verification and sanction disputes.
- The SARAL portal also carries a grievance and appeal option against a service that has crossed its notified delivery time.
Applying is free. No agent, tout or middleman can speed up a Vivah Shagun sanction, and no official will ask for your bank OTP.

Frequently asked questions
How much money does Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna give?
The grant ranges from Rs 1,100 to Rs 71,000 depending on category. Scheduled Caste, Vimukt Jati and Tapriwas families below the poverty line receive Rs 71,000, daughters of widowed, divorced or destitute women receive Rs 51,000, mass marriages and couples where both partners are Divyangjan receive Rs 51,000, sportswomen and non-SC BPL families receive Rs 31,000, and every other Haryana couple registering marriage within 30 days receives Rs 1,100 with a sweet box.
Within how long must you apply after the marriage?
Apply within six months of the date of marriage. The Directorate of Welfare of Scheduled Castes and Backward Classes states plainly that no application received after six months from the date of marriage will be entertained, and the application must carry the marriage registration.
What is the minimum age for the bride and groom?
The bride must be at least 18 years old and the groom at least 21 years old on the date of marriage. An under-age marriage is not merely ineligible for the grant, it is an offence, and the application will be rejected outright.
Who cannot apply for Mukhya Mantri Vivah Shagun Yojna?
Families who are not residents of Haryana are not eligible, and neither are couples where the bride is under 18 or the groom under 21. Applications filed more than six months after the marriage cannot be entertained, families whose verified income exceeds the ceiling for the slab claimed cannot draw that slab, and a family that has already drawn the shagun for the same daughter cannot claim it twice.
How is the amount paid, and in how many parts?
Most slabs are paid in two parts. For example, in the Rs 71,000 Scheduled Caste slab, Rs 66,000 is released around the time of marriage and the remaining Rs 5,000 after the marriage is registered. The Rs 51,000 widow and destitute slab splits as Rs 46,000 plus Rs 5,000, and the Rs 31,000 BPL slab as Rs 28,000 plus Rs 3,000.
Can the application be made offline?
No. The department states that only online applications on saralharyana.gov.in are accepted under this scheme. Citizens who cannot apply themselves can get the same online form filled at an Antyodaya SARAL Kendra or Common Service Centre, but there is no paper channel.
Is the Parivar Pehchan Patra compulsory?
Yes, in practice. The Family ID is what the department uses to read your verified family income, so an incorrect or un-updated income figure in the PPP is the most common reason a Vivah Shagun application is rejected. Get the PPP income corrected before applying, not afterwards.
Does a sportswoman need to be below the poverty line?
No. The sportswoman slab of Rs 31,000 is available to a woman sportsperson of Haryana irrespective of caste and income, which makes it the one slab in the scheme with no means test attached.
