Generator Subsidy - Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu state government scheme
Generator Subsidy in Tamil Nadu is listed on scheme directories with a 25 per cent subsidy on generator sets up to 125 KVA for manufacturers. That capacity ceiling belongs to the older MSMI Policy 2008; G.O. Ms No. 37 dated 6 July 2021 superseded it and now allows 25 per cent up to 320 KVA, capped at Rs 5,00,000.
What is the Tamil Nadu Generator Subsidy, and why do two capacity limits circulate?
Generator Subsidy in Tamil Nadu is an incentive of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department, Government of Tamil Nadu, that meets 25 per cent of the cost of a generator set bought by a manufacturing enterprise.
Anyone researching this scheme runs into two different capacity ceilings, and the difference is worth stating clearly before anything else:
- Scheme directories, including the myScheme listing for this entry, describe the incentive as a 25 per cent subsidy on generator sets up to 125 KVA for manufacturers in Tamil Nadu. That description reflects the MSMI Policy 2008 issued in G.O. (Ms) No. 14, MSME (B) Department, dated 7 May 2008.
- The operative rule today is the guidelines approved in G.O. (Ms) No. 37, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department, dated 6 July 2021, which allow 25 per cent of the cost of a generator set up to 320 KVA, subject to a maximum of Rs 5,00,000.
The 2021 Government Order settles the conflict on its own terms. It records that the Industries Commissioner asked for the words "all the earlier orders on subsidies are hereby superseded" to be included precisely "so as to avoid confusion between the incentives and concessions released in the MSMI Policy, 2008 and MSME Policy, 2021", and the order then supersedes all earlier orders on subsidies.
So an enterprise buying a generator today should plan against 320 KVA and Rs 5,00,000, and treat the 125 KVA figure as historical. Where an old transaction from the earlier policy period is being sorted out, the District Industries Centre is the office that decides which set of rules governs it.
Who is eligible for generator subsidy in Tamil Nadu?
Your enterprise can apply if:
- It is a manufacturing enterprise. The Tamil Nadu MSME portal covers all new and existing micro, small and medium manufacturing enterprises with generator capacity up to 320 KVA.
- It holds a Udyam Registration Number.
- The generator is brand new, purchased from the manufacturer or an authorised dealer.
- A safety certificate from the Department of Electrical Inspectorate has been obtained for installation at the factory premises.
- The application is filed within six months of the later of purchase and installation.
Your enterprise is not eligible if:
- It is a service enterprise. Micro, small and medium service enterprises are expressly excluded.
- The six-month window has closed. The portal names late filing as an express ground of ineligibility.
- The equipment is not brand new.
- The unit's line of activity appears in the ineligible annexure of the MSME Policy 2021 guidelines.
- A similar subsidy for the same generator has already been drawn from another State or Central Government department or agency.
How much is the subsidy worth?
| Policy version | Subsidy | Capacity ceiling | Monetary cap |
|---|---|---|---|
| MSMI Policy 2008 (superseded) | 25 per cent | 125 KVA as commonly listed | As notified then |
| MSME Policy 2021 guidelines, G.O. Ms No. 37 dated 6 July 2021 | 25 per cent | 320 KVA | Rs 5,00,000 |
Two rules shape the final number under the current guidelines:
- All accessories required for the erection and functioning of the generator set are treated as one unit with the set for computing subsidy.
- Loading, unloading, packaging and erection charges are excluded from the eligible cost.
A set costing Rs 16,00,000 with eligible accessories therefore attracts Rs 4,00,000, within the ceiling. A larger installation costing Rs 24,00,000 reaches the Rs 5,00,000 cap and stops there.
How to apply for generator subsidy in Tamil Nadu
- Order a brand new set of an eligible capacity from the manufacturer or an authorised dealer, and obtain the authorised dealership certificate along with the invoice.
- Install the set and get the Electrical Inspectorate safety certificate for the factory premises. Do not delay this step, it usually fixes the deadline.
- Log in to msmeonline.tn.gov.in, open the Incentives section and select Generator Subsidy.
- Fill in the online application with enterprise details, Udyam number, capacity in KVA and the cost claimed.
- Upload the supporting papers as PDFs under 200 KB each, Udyam certificate, invoice, payment receipt or banker's payment certificate, safety certificate, dealership certificate, TANGEDCO meter card, term loan sanction letter or Chartered Accountant certificate of funds, and the banker's letter with branch code and account number for ECS transfer.
- Submit inside the six-month window and save the reference number and a PDF copy of the filed application.
- Attend the inspection with all originals. Copies of documents held by a bank must be attested by the branch manager of the financing bank.
How the subsidy is released
- Where the enterprise availed a term loan, the General Manager releases the sanctioned subsidy to the financial institution, which adjusts it against the loan.
- Where the enterprise is self-financed, the subsidy is released directly to the enterprise's bank account through the Electronic Clearance System, which is why the banker's letter with branch code is on the document list.
Where generator subsidy claims go wrong
- Counting six months from the invoice when the safety certificate came later, or the reverse. The deadline runs from whichever date is later.
- Buying from a trader who is not an authorised dealer, so the dealership certificate cannot be produced.
- A service enterprise applying on the strength of a general MSME reading of the scheme.
- Claiming erection and transport charges as part of the machine cost.
- Relying on the 125 KVA figure from an old listing and assuming a larger set is disqualified altogether, when the current ceiling is 320 KVA.
- Uploads over 200 KB or in a format other than PDF, which the portal rejects.
Key dates
- Invoice date of the generator set.
- Safety certificate date from the Electrical Inspectorate Department.
- Six months from the later of the two, the last date to file the online application.
There is no annual application window and no seasonal cycle. The scheme is open through the year; the only clock that matters is the enterprise's own six-month window.
Related power and energy incentives worth filing together
An enterprise installing a generator is usually dealing with its whole power position at the same time, and Tamil Nadu's MSME package has three other items that bear on it:
- Low Tension Power Tariff (LTPT) subsidy to 20 per cent of the power charges paid to TANGEDCO for the first 36 months from the date of commencement of production or the date of power connection, whichever is later, for new micro manufacturing enterprises using low tension supply on Tariff III-B. Micro service enterprises and all small and medium enterprises are excluded. The guidelines specifically provide that an enterprise which began production using another means of energy, such as a generator or a diesel engine, before getting a power connection is eligible for LTPT subsidy from the date of power connection.
- PEACE detailed energy audit subsidy — 75 per cent of the audit cost up to Rs 1.00 lakh per audit per unit, for existing manufacturing MSMEs, claimed within one year of completing the audit by a BEE-accredited auditor. An audit frequently shows that the generator is oversized for the actual load.
- PEACE incentive for implementing energy audit recommendations to 50 per cent of the cost of eligible components up to Rs 10,00,000, where the unit achieves at least 10 per cent savings in specific energy consumption.
Filing these together is sensible because they share documents, the TANGEDCO meter card, the Udyam certificate and the constitution documents appear on every one of these checklists.
Help and grievance route
- General Manager, District Industries Centre of your district, the sanctioning authority and the right office to confirm which policy version applies to an old purchase.
- Regional Joint Director of Industries and Commerce, Chennai, for Chennai district enterprises.
- msmeonline.tn.gov.in, Know Your Eligibility, List of Documents, Track Your Status and the entrepreneur Grievance login.
- Industries Commissioner and Director of Industries and Commerce, Government of Tamil Nadu.
Applications are free. The department's published dos and don'ts warn enterprises not to be deceived by intermediaries and not to file by hiding a subsidy already availed under another government scheme.
How to check your application status
- Go to msmeonline.tn.gov.in, the same portal used to file the generator subsidy application. Log in with the enterprise credentials created at the time of filing.
- Open Track Your Status on the portal. Enter the application reference number that was generated and saved when the application was submitted.
- The tracker shows which stage the file is at: received at the District Industries Centre, under scrutiny, sent for inspection, sanctioned, or referred back for a document correction. If the status shows a query or a deficiency memo, respond from the same login rather than filing a fresh application.
- If the online tracker has not moved for several weeks, follow up offline with the General Manager, District Industries Centre of the district where the enterprise is registered, since that office is the sanctioning authority and can confirm whether the file is awaiting the physical inspection or a document from the bank. Chennai district enterprises should follow up with the Regional Joint Director of Industries and Commerce, Chennai instead.
- If the query concerns a delay or a dispute rather than a missing document, use the entrepreneur Grievance login on the same portal to record it formally, so there is a dated record of the follow-up.
- Keep the saved PDF of the filed application and the reference number on hand for every follow-up call or visit; the District Industries Centre asks for the reference number before pulling up the file.

Frequently asked questions
Is the Tamil Nadu generator subsidy limited to 125 KVA?
Not under the current rules. Scheme directories still describe a 125 KVA ceiling from the older policy, but the operative guidelines issued under G.O. (Ms) No. 37 of the MSME Department dated 6 July 2021 fix the maximum permissible capacity at 320 KVA with a subsidy ceiling of Rs 5,00,000.
What subsidy percentage applies?
25 per cent of the cost of the generator set. The percentage has stayed the same across policy versions; what changed is the capacity ceiling and the monetary cap.
Which enterprises can claim it?
Manufacturing enterprises. The Tamil Nadu MSME portal states that all new and existing micro, small and medium manufacturing enterprises with generator capacity up to 320 KVA are eligible, and that service enterprises are not.
How long do I have to apply?
Six months from the date of purchase of the generator set or the date of installation, that is the date of the safety certificate issued by the Electrical Inspectorate Department, whichever is later. Applications filed after six months are listed as ineligible.
Does the subsidy come to me or to my bank?
Where the enterprise took a term loan for the purchase, the subsidy is released to the financial institution. Where the purchase was self-financed, it is released directly to the enterprise's bank account.
Can I claim if I already got a generator subsidy elsewhere?
No. Enterprises that have availed a similar subsidy for the same purpose from any other State or Central Government department or agency are not eligible under the Tamil Nadu incentive package.
Where do I confirm which version of the rule applies to me?
Ask the General Manager of your District Industries Centre in writing before you order the machine, quoting the invoice date you expect. The 2021 Government Order states that all earlier orders on subsidies are superseded, so the district office applies the 2021 guidelines.
