Trade Licence in Telangana
Telangana state government scheme
Trade Licence in Telangana is issued by the urban local body where the shop stands. Inside Hyderabad, GHMC issues it online at trade.ghmc.gov.in and the corporation states the certificate with a Trade Licence Identification Number (TIN) is generated instantly after online payment. GHMC's published fee rate is Rs 3, Rs 4 or Rs 6 per square foot depending on road width.
What is a trade licence in Telangana?
A trade licence in Telangana is permission from the urban local body to run a listed business at a stated premises. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation puts it plainly on its trade licence page: it is "a License issued by the Local authority to run the listed business by the trader within the jurisdiction of the local body (GHMC)."
Telangana's Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department owns
urban local governance in the state. Inside Greater Hyderabad, GHMC administers
the trade licence itself and runs a dedicated application site at
trade.ghmc.gov.in, along with online payment, correction, status and
certificate-download pages on ghmc.gov.in. GHMC covers roughly 650 sq km
across 6 zones, 30 circles and 150 wards, spread over Hyderabad district and
parts of Medchal-Malkajgiri, Ranga Reddy and Sangareddy districts, so most
Hyderabad businesses fall inside its limits.
Outside the GHMC area, the municipal corporation or municipality covering your shop is the licensing authority, and you deal with that municipal office.
GHMC sorts trade licence applications into five inspection and approval categories, and the category decides which officer inspects the premises:
- Eating establishments
- Medical establishments
- Veterinary establishments
- Dangerous and offensive trades
- General establishments or offices
Who can and cannot apply for a Telangana trade licence?
Any trader running a listed business from a fixed premises inside a Telangana urban local body can apply. Individuals, partnership firms, LLPs and companies are all eligible; GHMC's document list expects an Aadhaar card for an individual applicant and a PAN or certificate of incorporation for a business entity.
You cannot apply, or your application will not stand, where:
- You have no legal occupancy of the premises. GHMC requires a lease deed or proof of legal occupancy, so a shop occupied without any document fails at the first check.
- The premises lie outside the limits of GHMC or any other Telangana urban local body; in that case the local body is not the licensing authority at all.
- You apply to the wrong corporation. A Warangal or Karimnagar shop is not licensed by GHMC, however convenient the GHMC portal looks.
- The trade is a regulated one and you lack the underlying statutory approval, a restaurant without FSSAI registration, a pharmacy without a drug licence, or a dangerous and offensive trade without the pollution consent.
- You are a mobile street vendor rather than a fixed-premises trader; street vending is regulated separately, and GHMC runs a distinct temporary trade licence for seasonal cases such as cracker shops.
How to apply for a trade licence in Telangana on the GHMC portal
GHMC publishes the procedure on its own trade licence page. Follow it in order.
- Open the GHMC trade licence service. Go to
ghmc.gov.in, open Trade License under Our Services, and choose "Apply For New Trade", which takes you totrade.ghmc.gov.in. - Register and log in with the one-time password. GHMC states that the applicant shall register and login through the OTP sent to the mobile number, so use a number you will keep: every later status message and the licence download depend on it.
- Fill the online application form. Enter all mandatory information: the trade name, the category (eating, medical, veterinary, dangerous and offensive, or general establishment), the premises address with circle and ward, the built-up area used for the trade, the road type in front of the premises, and the proprietor or company details. The road type matters. It drives the fee.
- Attach the required documents. ID proof (Aadhaar for an individual), PAN or the certificate of incorporation for the business, and the lease deed or proof of legal occupancy of the premises.
- Pay the trade licence fee online. GHMC integrates the payment gateway into the same application and accepts net banking, credit card or debit card. The amount is computed from the area and the road-width rate.
- Download the certificate with your TIN. GHMC states that after successful payment the trade licence certificate is issued instantly, carrying a Trade Licence Identification Number. Save the PDF and note the TIN.
- Track or correct afterwards. Use "Know Your Trade Applications Status" to follow an application, "Trade License Corrections" for an address or owner title change, and the certificate search page to download the licence again.
What does a GHMC trade licence cost?
GHMC publishes a trade licence fee rate sheet, and the rate is charged per square foot of the trade area, by the width of the road the premises face:
| Road | Width | Rate per sq ft |
|---|---|---|
| Single lane | 20 feet | Rs 3 |
| Double lane | 30 feet | Rs 4 |
| Multiple lane | more than 30 feet | Rs 6 |
A 400 sq ft shop on a single-lane road therefore attracts Rs 1,200 at the published rate, while the same shop on a road wider than 30 feet attracts Rs 2,400. GHMC also lists Resolution No. 173 dated 14 November 2019 on removal of the maximum ceiling in trade licence, so the amount follows the rate rather than stopping at a cap. Pay only the figure the portal itself computes.
How to apply outside Hyderabad
For a shop in a Telangana municipality or municipal corporation other than GHMC — Warangal, Nizamabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Ramagundam and the rest. The trade licence is issued by that urban local body under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, not by GHMC.
- Go to the revenue or town planning section of the municipal corporation or municipality covering the shop address.
- Ask for the trade licence application form and the fee schedule that body has adopted, since fee rates are fixed locally.
- Submit the form with identity proof, business PAN or incorporation certificate, and the lease deed or occupancy proof for the premises.
- Pay at the municipal counter or through the payment channel that body provides, and keep the receipt.
- Collect the acknowledgement, and use it to follow the file until the licence is issued.
Renewal and validity
A Telangana trade licence is an annual permission and is renewed each year. GHMC runs the renewal separately from the fresh application: trade licence dues are paid on the GHMC online payments page, and the renewal certificate is downloaded from the certificate search page once payment is complete. Keep the TIN handy, because the renewal and download screens are keyed to it.
Where something material changes. The owner's name, the shop address, or the title under which the licence was issued, use GHMC's "Trade License Corrections" service rather than waiting for the next renewal. A licence that describes a business you no longer run gives you no cover during an inspection.
Why Telangana trade licence applications fail
- No lease deed or occupancy proof for the premises, which is the first document GHMC checks.
- Wrong local body, applying to GHMC for a shop outside GHMC limits.
- Area or road type understated in the form, which produces a fee lower than the correct one and a licence that does not survive verification.
- Category mismatch, a food business filed as a general establishment skips the inspecting authority that should have seen it.
- Missing sector approval for a food, medical, veterinary or offensive trade.
- Payment abandoned midway, which leaves the application without a generated certificate.
Grievance route and a warning about middlemen
Use the GHMC grievance and enquiry links on ghmc.gov.in first, quoting your
application number or TIN. GHMC publishes a grievance dashboard and a separate
trade application status page, and the circle office of the zone covering your
shop is the physical escalation point. Outside Hyderabad, escalate at the
municipal commissioner's office of the local body.
Pay only the fee the official portal computes, through the portal's own gateway. The GHMC procedure is a self-service one: registration by OTP, form, upload, online payment, instant certificate. No agent can make a corporation issue a licence faster than the portal already does, and no one is entitled to cash on the side. If somebody asks you for an amount the portal never displayed, stop, keep the payment receipt you already have, and raise a grievance with GHMC.
How to check your application status
Inside GHMC limits, status tracking happens on the same portal used to apply, not through a phone helpline.
- Go to
ghmc.gov.inand open the Trade License section under Our Services, then choose "Know Your Trade Applications Status" (this links through totrade.ghmc.gov.in). - Enter the application number or the mobile number used at registration. Since GHMC logs applicants in by OTP to that number, the same number is usually the lookup key.
- The status page shows where the file stands: submitted, sent for inspection, approved, or payment pending. A category like eating, medical, veterinary, or dangerous and offensive routes through its own inspecting officer, so an application can sit at "under inspection" longer than a general establishment does.
- Once the fee is paid and the certificate is generated, the same portal's certificate search page lets you pull the licence PDF again using the Trade Licence Identification Number (TIN), so keep the TIN from the first download rather than waiting on a status update to get it.
- If the online status has not moved for an unreasonable time, escalate at the circle office of the zone the shop falls in, quoting the application number or TIN, rather than only refreshing the portal.
For a shop outside GHMC, in a municipal corporation or municipality elsewhere in Telangana, there is no equivalent public status page. Follow up with the acknowledgement receipt at the same municipal revenue or town planning counter where the application was filed, since these offices track files manually rather than through a shared online system. Keep the receipt number ready for that visit; it is the reference the counter staff will look for.

Frequently asked questions
Who issues a trade licence in Telangana?
The urban local body issues the trade licence in Telangana — GHMC inside Greater Hyderabad, and the municipal corporation or municipality elsewhere — under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department. GHMC describes it as a licence issued by the local authority to run a listed business within the jurisdiction of the local body.
How much does a GHMC trade licence cost?
GHMC's published trade licence fee rate is Rs 3 per square foot on a single-lane road of 20 feet, Rs 4 per square foot on a double-lane road of 30 feet, and Rs 6 per square foot on a multiple-lane road wider than 30 feet. The portal calculates your amount from the trade area and road type before payment.
How long does GHMC take to issue a trade licence?
GHMC states that after successful online payment the applicant is issued the trade licence certificate instantly, with a Trade Licence Identification Number (TIN). That instant issue is the reason GHMC pushes the whole process through the portal rather than a counter.
What is a TIN in a GHMC trade licence?
TIN is the Trade Licence Identification Number that GHMC prints on the certificate generated after payment. Use the TIN to search your licence, pay trade licence dues and download the renewal certificate on the GHMC online payment pages.
Is there a maximum ceiling on the GHMC trade licence fee?
GHMC lists Resolution No. 173 dated 14 November 2019 on "Removal of Maximum Ceiling in Trade License" among the orders governing the service, so the fee follows the per-square-foot rate rather than a capped amount. Always pay the figure the portal computes for your own premises.
Do Telangana municipalities outside Hyderabad use the same portal?
No — trade.ghmc.gov.in serves the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation area only, and other Telangana municipalities issue trade licences through their own municipal offices and the Commissioner and Director of Municipal Administration systems. Confirm at the municipal office covering your shop address before paying anything.
Is a trade licence the same as TG-bPASS building permission?
No — TG-bPASS is the Telangana building permission and occupancy system under the Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department, while a trade licence is permission to carry on a trade at the premises. A shop in a newly built building can need both, obtained separately.
How do I check my GHMC trade licence application status?
Use the "Know Your Trade Applications Status" page on ghmc.gov.in with the details from your submission, and the certificate download page once the licence is issued. GHMC also runs a separate page for downloading the new trade acknowledgement and the renewal certificate.
