Madhya Pradesh state government scheme
Madhya Pradesh Professional Talent Examination Award Scheme, known as Pratibha Yojana, pays a one-time award of Rs 50,000 to a backward class student whose family income is up to Rs 3,00,000 and Rs 25,000 where income is higher, after selection through JEE, NEET, CLAT or NDA into an IIT, NIT, NLU, AIIMS or a state government medical college.
What is the Madhya Pradesh Professional Talent Examination Award Scheme?
Madhya Pradesh Professional Talent Examination Award Scheme, listed on district portals as Pratibha Yojana or the Talent Plan, is a one-time cash award run by the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department of the Government of Madhya Pradesh. The scheme rewards a backward class student who clears a national professional entrance examination and takes admission to a premier institution. An IIT, an NIT, a National Law University, AIIMS, a government medical college of Madhya Pradesh, or the National Defence Academy.
According to district implementation pages of the department, the award is:
- Rs 50,000 where annual family income is up to Rs 3,00,000.
- Rs 25,000 where annual family income is more than Rs 3,00,000.
The scheme is recorded as commencing on 14 September 2017 and revised from time to time. The examinations named on the district pages are JEE for engineering, NEET for medicine and dentistry, CLAT for law, and NDA for the defence academy route.
The purpose is narrow and practical. A student from a backward class family who clears JEE Advanced or NEET faces an immediate cash wall in the first few weeks, admission fee, hostel deposit, travel to another city, a laptop or instrument set; long before any scholarship or education loan disburses. A single Rs 50,000 payment at that moment does more than the same money spread across three years, which is why Madhya Pradesh keeps this award separate from its recurring post-matric scholarship.
Main features
- A one-time award, paid on selection and admission.
- Two slabs decided purely by family income, not two separate eligibility tests.
- Covers JEE, NEET, CLAT and NDA selections.
- Restricted to premier institutions; IIT, NIT, NLU, AIIMS, Madhya Pradesh government medical colleges, NDA.
- Implemented by the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Office.
- Parallel versions exist for Scheduled Tribe students through the Tribal Welfare Department and MPTAAS.
Who is eligible for the Pratibha Yojana award?
A student is eligible if:
- The student belongs to a backward class (OBC) notified in Madhya Pradesh, with a caste certificate from the competent revenue authority.
- The student is a permanent resident of Madhya Pradesh.
- The student has been selected through JEE, NEET, CLAT or NDA.
- The selection has resulted in actual admission to an IIT, NIT, National Law University, AIIMS, a government medical college of Madhya Pradesh, or the National Defence Academy.
- The student has a bank account in their own name, Aadhaar-seeded for direct transfer.
Family income does not decide eligibility here. It decides which of the two award amounts applies.
Who cannot apply or is not eligible:
- Students outside the backward class category. Scheduled Tribe students apply under the Tribal Welfare Department's version of the same award through MPTAAS, and Scheduled Caste students through their own department.
- Students domiciled outside Madhya Pradesh, since this is a state-funded award.
- Students who cleared an entrance examination but did not take admission. A rank alone is not enough; the admission proof is what the district office sanctions against.
- Students admitted to institutions outside the named list, including private engineering colleges, private medical colleges and deemed universities.
- Students admitted through a state counselling route rather than the covered national examinations, unless the district circular for the year expressly includes it.
- Students applying long after the admission year, since districts sanction against the current session's budget.

How to apply for the Professional Talent Examination Award
- Take admission first. Complete the counselling and pay the admission fee at the IIT, NIT, NLU, AIIMS, government medical college or academy, and keep the allotment letter and fee receipt. The award is sanctioned against admission, not against a rank.
- Obtain a current family income certificate from the competent revenue authority. This single document decides whether you receive Rs 50,000 or Rs 25,000, so get it issued for the correct financial year.
- Collect the prescribed application form from the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Office: the office of the Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, at the district headquarters.
- Fill in the form with your entrance examination details, rank, institution, course, admission date, category, income and bank account particulars.
- Attach self-attested copies of the caste certificate, income certificate, entrance result or rank card, admission proof, class 12 marksheet, domicile certificate, Aadhaar card and bank passbook page.
- Submit the file at the district office in the same academic session as the admission, and take a dated acknowledgement with a file number.
- Follow up on the sanction with the same office. Payment is released by direct transfer to the student's own account after the sanction order is issued.
Scheduled Tribe students following the parallel tribal version of this award apply online through the MPTAAS portal at tribal.mp.gov.in/mptaas instead, with the file going to the departmental district officer.
How much is paid, and on what basis?
The award is Rs 50,000 for a family income up to Rs 3,00,000 a year and Rs 25,000 where income exceeds that figure. Payment is one-time and reaches the student's own Aadhaar-seeded bank account after sanction.
Because the higher slab is worth twice the lower one, the income certificate deserves more care than any other paper in the file. An outdated certificate, or one issued for the wrong financial year, is the most expensive avoidable mistake in this scheme, it does not cost eligibility, it costs Rs 25,000.
How to check the status of your application
- Quote your acknowledgement or file number at the District Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Office, which holds the sanction file.
- Ask specifically whether the case is pending verification, pending sanction or sanctioned and awaiting release. The next step is different in each case.
- If a sanction has been issued but no money has arrived, confirm with your bank that the account is active and Aadhaar-seeded.
- Escalate through the Madhya Pradesh CM Helpline on 181 if the district office does not respond within a reasonable period.
Common reasons an application is rejected
- Institution outside the covered list, most often a private engineering or medical college.
- Admission not completed, with only a rank card on file.
- Income certificate stale or for the wrong year, which either downgrades the slab or stalls the file.
- Caste certificate not from a Madhya Pradesh authority, or in a different name spelling from the Aadhaar card.
- Bank account not in the student's own name. A parent's account is not accepted for a student award paid by direct transfer.
- Application filed in a later session than the admission, after the district's internal cut-off.
- Wrong department, where a Scheduled Tribe or Scheduled Caste student files with the backward classes office instead of their own.
Help and grievance redressal
- Assistant Director, Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare, in your district, the implementing and sanctioning authority for this award.
- Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department, Government of Madhya Pradesh, whose department page is hosted on mp.gov.in.
- MPTAAS portal, tribal.mp.gov.in/mptaas, for Scheduled Tribe students using the parallel tribal welfare version of the scheme.
- Madhya Pradesh CM Helpline: 181, for a grievance the district office has not settled.
No fee is payable for this award. The district office deals directly with the student, and no coaching institute or agent has any role in the sanction.

Frequently asked questions
How much does the Madhya Pradesh Professional Talent Examination Award pay?
The award is Rs 50,000 where annual family income is up to Rs 3,00,000 and Rs 25,000 where income is more than Rs 3,00,000. District implementation pages of the Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department carry both slabs, and it is a one-time payment rather than a yearly scholarship.
Which examinations count for this award?
JEE, NEET, CLAT and NDA count, where the selection leads to admission to an IIT, NIT, National Law University, AIIMS, or a government medical college of Madhya Pradesh. The scheme is aimed at the entrance examinations that lead into premier professional institutions rather than at entrance examinations generally.
Who can get the award?
Backward class students who are permanent residents of Madhya Pradesh and have been selected and admitted through one of the covered national entrance examinations can get the award. The Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare Department implements the scheme through district offices.
Is there an income limit?
There is no income bar on eligibility, only on the amount: the higher slab of Rs 50,000 applies up to Rs 3,00,000 of annual family income and the lower slab of Rs 25,000 above it. That is unusual among Madhya Pradesh welfare schemes, most of which cut off entirely above a threshold.
When did this scheme start?
District implementation pages record the scheme starting on 14 September 2017, with revisions from time to time. Read the current district circular rather than assume an older slab or institution list still applies.
Is this the same scheme as the tribal Pratibha Yojana?
No, though the design is identical. Madhya Pradesh runs parallel talent awards through its Tribal Welfare Department for Scheduled Tribe students, routed through the MPTAAS portal, and through Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare for backward class students. Apply through the department matching your category.
Does the award repeat every year of the course?
No. The award is a one-time payment made on selection and admission, not a recurring scholarship. A student who needs continuing support should also look at the backward class post-matric scholarship for professional courses.
Can a student admitted to a private engineering or medical college claim it?
No. The scheme is framed around admission to premier institutions: IITs, NITs, National Law Universities, AIIMS, Madhya Pradesh government medical colleges and the NDA, so admission to a private college outside that list does not qualify.
