What is the Rajasthan Free Uniform Distribution Scheme?

Rajasthan Free Uniform Distribution Scheme, called the Nishulk Uniform Vitaran Yojana in the state, supplies free school uniforms to every child studying in Classes 1 to 8 in a Rajasthan government school. The School Education Department of the Government of Rajasthan runs the scheme, which was launched on 29 November 2022.

The scheme is universal within its target group. Unlike most welfare schemes it carries no caste condition, no income ceiling and no merit test, every child on the rolls of a government school in Classes 1 to 8 receives the benefit. That design decision is the reason the numbers are large: the scheme covers roughly 70.77 lakh students across about 64,479 government schools, split approximately between 34.8 lakh boys and 35.9 lakh girls.

How the benefit is delivered

Rajasthan does not distribute readymade uniforms. The state instead:

  1. Supplies cloth for two complete uniform sets per student per academic session, routed through the school and the School Management Committee.
  2. Pays a stitching allowance so families can have the uniform tailored to the child's actual size.

The per-student government outlay has been reported at a maximum of about Rs 600, of which roughly Rs 425 is the cost of fabric for two sets and the remainder is the stitching component. Announcements at the time of launch put the stitching transfer at Rs 200 per student, and later procurement orders have been reported at Rs 175. Because this figure has moved between sessions, treat it as a range and confirm the current amount with your child's school rather than relying on any single published number.

What the uniform looks like

The prescribed pattern published for the scheme is a light blue shirt with dark brown or grey trousers for boys, and a light blue kurta with matching salwar or skirt for girls. Girls in Classes 6 to 8 additionally receive a dark scarf. Some sessions have also included a woollen sweater in the entitlement.

Why the scheme exists

The stated objective is to remove uniform cost as a reason a child stops attending school. For a family sending three children to a government school, two sets of uniform each is a real annual expense, and it falls due precisely at the start of the session when other costs also land. Making the uniform free removes one of the standard excuses for dropping a child, particularly a girl, out of the middle grades.

Who is eligible for the free uniform in Rajasthan?

Your child receives the uniform if:

  • The child is enrolled in a government school in Rajasthan.
  • The child is studying in any class from Class 1 to Class 8.
  • The child's enrolment record on Shala Darpan is complete and current.

There is no income test, no caste requirement and no minimum attendance condition attached to the entitlement itself.

Your child cannot claim the uniform, or is not eligible, if:

  • The child studies in a private school, including a private unaided or private aided school outside the government school system.
  • The child is in Class 9 or above. The scheme stops at Class 8.
  • The child is not enrolled in a Rajasthan government school at all, for example a child studying in another state.
  • The child's name has been struck off the school register for the session, in which case the entitlement lapses until re-enrolment.

What documents are required?

No application is filed, but a few records must be correct for the benefit to flow, particularly the money component:

Document Mandatory Notes
Government school enrolment Yes The qualifying condition itself
Jan Aadhaar card of the family Yes Links the family for the DBT stitching payment
Aadhaar card of the student Yes Links the Shala Darpan record, prevents duplicates
Parent or guardian bank account Yes Where the stitching allowance is credited

How to apply for the Rajasthan Free Uniform Distribution Scheme

  1. Enrol your child in a Rajasthan government school in any class from 1 to
  2. Enrolment is the entitlement โ€” there is no separate scheme application.
  3. Give the school the child's Aadhaar and the family Jan Aadhaar number at admission, and make sure the school enters them in the Shala Darpan record. An incomplete Shala Darpan entry is what most often stops a benefit.
  4. Provide an active bank account of the parent or guardian, seeded with Aadhaar, so the stitching allowance can reach you by Direct Benefit Transfer.
  5. Collect the cloth from the school when distribution is announced for the session. The School Management Committee handles distribution locally.
  6. Get the uniform stitched to the child's size and keep the tailor's receipt, which some schools ask to see.
  7. Verify the stitching credit in your bank passbook and raise it with the school promptly if the amount has not arrived within a few weeks of distribution.

How do I check the status of the benefit?

  1. Ask the class teacher or school head whether cloth allotment for the session has reached the school. Supply arrives district by district, and a delay is usually a supply issue rather than an individual problem.
  2. Check the Shala Darpan Beneficiary Scheme Portal at rajshaladarpan.rajasthan.gov.in, which lists beneficiary scheme information school by school.
  3. Check the Jan Soochna portal at jansoochna.rajasthan.gov.in for scheme and beneficiary information published by the department.
  4. Check your own bank passbook or SMS alerts for the stitching credit, which arrives as a DBT entry.

Why the benefit fails to reach some children

  • Shala Darpan record incomplete: missing Aadhaar, missing Jan Aadhaar linkage, or a wrong class entry. This is the single largest cause.
  • Bank account not seeded with Aadhaar, or an account that has gone dormant, so the DBT stitching payment bounces back.
  • Name mismatch between the child's Aadhaar and the school register.
  • Cloth supply not yet delivered to the district or the school. Distribution in past sessions has been delayed pending budget release, and the delay is institutional rather than individual.
  • Child enrolled late in the session, after the school's allotment was calculated. Ask the school to include the child in the revised requirement.
  • Duplicate enrolment in two schools, which the system flags and holds.

Key dates to know

The scheme has no application window and no last date. Distribution follows the academic session: schools receive allotment after the session begins, and cloth is handed out during the session. The practical timing has varied between years because distribution depends on budget release and procurement, so a parent should track the school's announcement rather than a fixed calendar date.

The launch date to know is 29 November 2022, when the Government of Rajasthan announced the scheme for government school students of Classes 1 to 8.

Help and grievance redressal

  • School head or principal, the first and usually fastest point of contact
  • School Management Committee, which handles local distribution
  • Block Education Officer, where the school cannot resolve a missing allotment or a failed stitching payment
  • District Education Officer (Elementary), for district-level supply issues
  • Jan Soochna helpdesk: 18001806127
  • Rajasthan Sampark, the state grievance platform, as the escalation of last resort

Both the cloth and the stitching allowance are free entitlements. No school, teacher, committee member or vendor may charge a parent for the cloth, deduct a share of the stitching amount, or require purchase from a nominated tailor. Report any such demand to the Block Education Officer.

Documents required

Enrolment in a Rajasthan government school
The single qualifying condition. The child's Shala Darpan record is what triggers the entitlement.
Jan Aadhaar card of the family
Needed so the stitching allowance can be transferred to the family bank account through DBT.
Aadhaar card of the student
Used to link the child's Shala Darpan record and avoid duplicate entries.
Bank account details of the parent or guardian
The stitching amount is paid by Direct Benefit Transfer; an inactive or unseeded account blocks it.

Frequently asked questions

Who gets a free uniform under the Rajasthan scheme?

Every student enrolled in Classes 1 to 8 in a Rajasthan government school receives the benefit, regardless of caste, category or family income. The scheme covers roughly 70 lakh students across more than 64,000 government schools.

How many uniform sets does a student get?

Each student receives cloth for two complete sets of uniform in an academic session. The state supplies the fabric and pays a separate stitching allowance rather than handing over readymade uniforms.

How much is the stitching allowance?

The state pays a stitching allowance per student, reported at around Rs 175 to Rs 200 depending on the year's order, within a total per-student outlay of about Rs 600. Confirm the current year's amount with your child's school, since the figure has been revised between sessions.

Do parents have to apply for the free uniform?

No. There is no application form. The school identifies eligible children from its own enrolment register and the Shala Darpan record, and distributes cloth to every student of Classes 1 to 8.

When was the Rajasthan Free Uniform Distribution Scheme launched?

The scheme was launched on 29 November 2022 by the Government of Rajasthan, covering government school students of Classes 1 to 8.

Who stitches the uniform?

The family arranges stitching and the state pays for it. Fabric is supplied through the school and the School Management Committee, and the stitching cost is transferred so parents can have the uniform tailored to the child's size.

Can a private school student get a free uniform under this scheme?

No. The scheme is limited to students of Rajasthan government schools. Private school students are not eligible.

What should a parent do if the stitching money has not arrived?

Check with the school first that the child's Jan Aadhaar and bank account details are correctly entered in Shala Darpan, because an unseeded or wrongly entered account is the most common reason a DBT payment fails. If the record is correct, take the matter to the Block Education Officer.
