What is a trade licence in Tripura?

A trade licence in Tripura is the urban local body's written permission to carry on a stated trade at a stated premises. Tripura's Urban Development Department governs the state's municipal bodies, and the licence itself is issued by the corporation, municipal council or nagar panchayat in whose area the shop stands.

Agartala, the state's largest urban area, is covered by Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC), established in 1974. AMC publishes a dedicated trade licence page at agartalacity.tripura.gov.in/trade-license and runs the service online through e-Subidha, its citizen services portal at amcservices.agartalasmartcityservices.in/amc/, where "Online Trade Licence" sits alongside online property tax, touji, building plan, signage and town hall booking.

AMC states three things about the service in its own workflow note, and each one matters to an applicant:

• All applications and approvals are processed through the AMC Online System.
• The approval authority varies with the category and nature of the trade licence.
• All payments must be made online.

Who can and cannot apply for a Tripura trade licence?

Any trader running a business from a fixed premises inside a Tripura urban local body can apply. Sole proprietors, joint businesses and firms are all eligible; AMC asks specifically for the partnership deed in the case of a joint business, and identity proof for the applicant in every case.

You cannot apply, or your application will not be granted, where:

• You have no lawful hold on the premises, whether by ownership, a rent agreement, or an AMC touji allotment in a corporation market.
• The shop lies outside the limits of any Tripura urban local body, in which case the licensing authority is not the municipality.
• Your identity documents are not self-attested and legible, AMC's own note says all documents must be self-attested and clear, and the counter clerk verifies them against a checklist before the file moves at all.
• The trade is regulated and you lack the statutory approval behind it: FSSAI registration for a food business, a drug licence for a medicine shop, pollution consent for a processing unit.
• You are applying for one of the trades where the approval authority is a higher one and you have not met that authority's conditions. AMC states plainly that the approval authority varies with the category and nature of the trade.

How to apply for a trade licence in Agartala on e-Subidha

Agartala Municipal Corporation publishes the workflow as a formal flow diagram. The applicant's own steps are these.

1. Open e-Subidha and register. Go to amcservices.agartalasmartcityservices.in/amc/ and open Online Trade Licence. Register with a mobile number you will keep, because the licence and every notice reach you through that login.
2. Apply for the trade licence with documents. Fill the application with the trade name, the trade item you are applying under, the premises address and ward, and the constitution of the business. Upload the identity proof: Aadhaar, voter ID, PAN, passport or driving licence, and the partnership deed if the business is a joint one. Self-attest every page.
3. Wait for counter-clerk document verification. In AMC's workflow the counter clerk verifies documents against a checklist and passes the file to the Executive Officer.
4. Answer any deficiency raised by the Executive Officer. The Executive Officer verifies and decides: approved, deficiency, or rejected. A deficiency sends the application back to you for correction rather than killing it, so respond quickly.
5. Pay the fee online. Once the application is approved, pay the fee for your trade item through the portal and download the fee receipt. AMC insists that all payments be made online.
6. Collect the digitally signed licence. The Executive Officer digitally signs and the trade licence is generated and issued in your login. Save the PDF and note the licence number.

AMC commits to a service level agreement of 7 days — the application will be processed and disposed of within seven days, subject to complete and correct documents.

How to renew a trade licence in Agartala

Renewal in AMC is a shorter path than a new application, and the corporation labels it "renewal process (auto approved)".

1. Log in to e-Subidha and apply for renewal against your existing licence.
2. The renewal is auto-approved by the system, there is no fresh counter-clerk verification stage.
3. Pay the renewal fee online.
4. The Executive Officer digitally signs the renewed licence.
5. Download the renewed trade licence from your login.

The list runs to several hundred trade items with separate retail and wholesale rates, so find your exact item on the AMC fee structure rather than assuming a neighbouring category. Other Tripura urban local bodies fix their own rates; ask at that municipal office.

How do I check my Tripura trade licence application status?

Log in to e-Subidha with the credentials you applied with and open your application. The workflow tells you exactly where a file can be sitting: with the counter clerk for document verification, with the Executive Officer for a decision, waiting on your payment, or awaiting the digital signature. If the file has been returned as a deficiency, the correction is yours to make. AMC also runs an e-Grievance channel through its e-Subidha services.

Why Tripura trade licence applications get rejected

• Documents not self-attested or not legible, which AMC calls out explicitly.
• No partnership deed for a joint business.
• Wrong trade item chosen, so the fee computed does not match the business actually being run.
• Wrong urban local body, sending the file to an office with no jurisdiction over the address.
• Deficiency left unanswered after the Executive Officer returns the file.
• Missing sector approval for a regulated trade such as food or medicines.

Grievance route and a warning about middlemen

Raise a grievance through the e-Subidha grievance service in your login first, quoting the application number. If the file still does not move, take the same number to the trade licence section of Agartala Municipal Corporation, and then to the Urban Development Department, Government of Tripura, which owns urban local governance in the state.

Pay only the fee published for your trade item, and pay it online through the portal, AMC says all payments must be made online, which means a cash demand outside the portal has no basis. No agent can move an AMC file faster than the seven-day service level agreement the corporation has already committed to. Apply yourself, keep the online receipt, and report anyone asking for a payment the portal never showed you.
