What was the Tripura Health Assurance Scheme for Poor?

Tripura Health Assurance Scheme for Poor, commonly abbreviated THASP, is listed in scheme directories as a Department of Health and Family Welfare programme providing health insurance coverage to economically poor families in Tripura for hospitalisation expenses.

This guide has to be honest about what could and could not be verified. The Government of Tripura's own websites do not currently publish a scheme page, notification, guideline or application form for THASP. The Health and Family Welfare Department's programme list at health.tripura.gov.in does not carry it, and the Tripura State Portal's scheme archive, which does carry other health documents such as the Tripura Journalist Health Insurance Scheme, 2022 to does not list it either.

No coverage amount, enrolment window or helpline for THASP could be confirmed on a Tripura government source. Rather than repeat a figure from a secondary directory, this guide states what Tripura's own budget documents and health department pages actually say about how a poor family in the state gets cashless hospital treatment today.

How does a poor family in Tripura get cashless hospital treatment now?

Two schemes carry the load, and the Finance Minister's budget speech for 2026-27 names both with their patient numbers for 2025-26:

Scheme Patients treated cashless in 2025-26
Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) 1,14,132
Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana 43,975

AB-PMJAY is the centrally sponsored scheme, listed on the Health and Family Welfare Department's programme page as one of the department's running programmes. It provides cashless secondary and tertiary hospitalisation at empanelled public and private hospitals for eligible families.

Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana is Tripura's own state-funded cashless scheme. The budget speech reports it separately from AB-PMJAY with its own patient count, which is what establishes it as a distinct state programme rather than a state label on the central scheme. Families not covered under AB-PMJAY's entitlement lists are the group this state scheme is designed to reach.

Alongside these, Tripura launched Mukhyamantri Niramay Arogya Abhiyan in January 2026 for screening, diagnosis and treatment of citizens above 30 years for diabetes, hypertension, oral, breast and cervical cancer, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, myocardial infarction and stroke. That is a screening and treatment abhiyan, not an insurance cover, but for a poor family it is often the entry point that leads to a hospitalisation claim.

Who can and cannot use these schemes

You can use the cashless route if:

  • Your family is on the AB-PMJAY entitlement list, or is covered under the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana.
  • You hold a valid Ayushman card generated against your Aadhaar.
  • The treatment needed is a hospitalisation package available at an empanelled hospital in Tripura or elsewhere in India.

You are not eligible, and cannot use the cashless route, if:

  • Your family is not on either entitlement list. Verify your status at an empanelled hospital's Ayushman Mitra desk before you count on the cover.
  • You seek reimbursement for outpatient consultations, diagnostics or medicines bought outside a covered admission β€” these are hospitalisation schemes.
  • The hospital you have chosen is not empanelled. Treatment there is at your own cost, however serious the illness.
  • You are trying to claim under THASP by name. With no current published scheme document, no office will process a claim under that title; use the AB-PMJAY or CMJAY route instead.

How to apply for cashless cover in Tripura

  1. Check your family's status. Visit the Ayushman Mitra desk at any empanelled government hospital in your district, or a Common Service Centre, with your Aadhaar and ration card, and ask whether your family is listed under AB-PMJAY or the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana.
  2. Complete e-KYC and generate the Ayushman card. This is done with your Aadhaar and an OTP on your registered mobile number, or biometrically at the desk. Card generation is free of cost.
  3. Collect the cards for every family member named on the list, not only the head of the family. Each member needs their own card at the time of admission.
  4. Use the card at an empanelled hospital. Present it at admission, before treatment starts, so the hospital raises a cashless pre-authorisation rather than a cash bill.
  5. Keep the discharge summary and package details for your records, in case a dispute arises later.

What to do if cashless treatment is refused

  1. Ask for the refusal in writing, along with the reason given.
  2. Escalate to the hospital's Ayushman Mitra and then to the hospital administration on the same day, since pre-authorisation is time-sensitive.
  3. Call the Tripura CM Helpline on 1905, which is the state's general grievance channel and covers health department matters.
  4. Write to the Director of Health Services, Health Directorate Building, Pandit J. N. Complex, Gurkhabasti, Agartala, email dir.health-tr@gov.in.

An empanelled hospital cannot demand payment from a covered beneficiary for a package included in the scheme, and no agent or middleman is entitled to charge for generating an Ayushman card.

Tripura's hospital network

The Health and Family Welfare Department records the state's public health infrastructure as 6 state hospitals, 6 district hospitals, 12 sub-divisional hospitals, 23 community health centres, 115 primary health centres including 7 urban PHCs, and 1,001 health sub-centres, alongside 39 Ayurvedic dispensaries and 73 homeopathic dispensaries. Of 1,139 health care facilities in the state, 528 to 46.36 per cent: have been certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards, which the budget speech describes as among the highest shares in the country.

The Sabroom Integrated Ayush Hospital has been made operational for all-round and preventive care, and chemotherapy and supportive oncology services are available at district hospitals, with the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Regional Cancer Centre at Agartala as the referral point. For a poor family, knowing which of these facilities is empanelled matters more than knowing the name of the scheme.

A note on this guide

Tripura Health Assurance Scheme for Poor could not be verified on any Government of Tripura source at the time of writing. If the department republishes the scheme document, the coverage amount, eligibility list and claim route will be added here. Until then, an eligible family should pursue the AB-PMJAY and Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana route described above, which Tripura's own budget documents confirm is live and paying for well over one and a half lakh treatments a year.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Tripura Health Assurance Scheme for Poor still running?

Tripura's own government portals no longer publish a scheme page, notification or guideline for THASP, and it does not appear in the state portal's scheme archive. Cashless hospital treatment for poor families in Tripura is currently delivered through AB-PMJAY and the state-funded Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, so treat those as the live route.

How many people used Tripura's cashless health schemes recently?

During 2025-26, 1,14,132 patients availed cashless treatment under Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana and 43,975 patients under the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana, according to the Finance Minister's budget speech for 2026-27.

What is the Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana?

Chief Minister Jan Arogya Yojana is Tripura's own state-funded cashless hospitalisation scheme, running alongside AB-PMJAY. The 2026-27 budget speech reports it separately from AB-PMJAY, with its own patient count, which confirms it is a distinct state scheme rather than a rebranding.

How do I get an Ayushman card in Tripura?

Approach an empanelled hospital's Ayushman Mitra desk, a Common Service Centre, or use the Ayushman app with your Aadhaar and registered mobile number. Card generation is free of cost and no agent should charge for it.

What does the cover pay for?

Cashless secondary and tertiary hospitalisation at empanelled public and private hospitals. It is a hospitalisation cover, not a reimbursement of outpatient consultations or routine medicines bought outside.

Where can I complain if a hospital refuses cashless treatment?

Call the Tripura CM Helpline on 1905, or raise the matter with the Director of Health Services at the Health Directorate Building, Pandit J. N. Complex, Gurkhabasti, Agartala. Empanelled hospitals cannot demand payment for a covered package.
